Yeah and he has also been portrayed as everything from a sorcerer, to an ancient ghost, to a green-skinned alien , to a teenage descendant of Gengis Khan in magic armour. He doesn't even exist in the Ultimates because writers didn't know what to do with him, so they made the Mandarin an organisation instead.:funny: Bottom line is, writers, cartoons etc don't know what to do with the character so they end up making up their own interpretation. The same can't be said for Doom. To think otherwise is being dilusional. There's a reason why he's regarded as one of Marvel's greatest villains and the Mandarin is not. If you wanna talk about the Mandarin, head over to the IM threads and let's not continue to derail this thread. It's about Dr Doom.

:doh:Are you serious?:dry::whatever:

Let's not forget the Heroes Reborn Mandarin. He was a robot created by Doom in that universe to troll Tony Stark, BECAUSE Doom retained his 616 memories and was pissed at Iron Man for carrying him into Onslaught.

If anything Iron Man 3 did have source material for that particular take on the Mandarin, and it's almost two decades old.

I'll just leave this cosplay here,

Listen, I think Doom looks like ****, but the people who are using this as an excuse to forsake the film, as if Doom's look affects the movie's quality, are ridiculous. That's just stupid, and the only thing I can think of in response is the Quicksilver controversy.

I'll agree that a bad costume doesn't necessarily break a film. Dafoe's Goblin looks like utter crap, but it in no way ruins SM1 for me. That neing said, Doom's appearance isn't the first point of concern to leak out. We've heard PLENTY about this project that definitely should give FF fans pause, and many reasons to not be excited about this film at all. This is just another brick in the ever growing wall.

I wish they would have gone for the more faithful costume for Green Goblin because yeah...the suit they went with was pretty mediocre.

Makes me wonder all of the designs they went through to end up on that one.

Nobody ever said this, and I doubt anybody believes this and if the studio was providing anything that sounded encouraging, most would give them the benefit of the doubt on things like this that might be a little questionable.

HOWEVER, with that said, I think that if we had to pick one single item that is most important for this film working or not, a strong argument could be made that Doom is that one thing.

That's pretty cool! I've never seen that before. I can't imagine why they went with the plastic mask over that. That would have been wonderfully creepy and frightening on screen.

1. Quicksilver was only a minor character, not the main villain. The two are not comparable.

2. This is far from the only thing wrong with the project. It is just the latest piece of crap on a pile full of it.

Do we know for sure that Doom is even the main villain in this film? If the Negative Zone rumors are true, Anhilius or Blastarr would be more likely.

And one thing I've been wondering about the Doom photo, and the Thing bust too, for that matter, is what's the difference between them and all those random social media pictures and videos of the Batman/Superman set that keep getting posted on the front page? Just curious as to what is allowed to be posted and why.

Officially released photos are allowed. Of course that is almost impossible to stop it at its beginnings. Once we find out that the studio is wanting the pics pulled, we do so. The relationship with the studios are very important for sites like this, and though legally it may be a little hard to no for sure, if the studio wants them pulled we will do so. If it is posted on the front page of this site, it is officially released, meaning the site has permission to use them.

Imagine Dafoe cackling under that thing instead of that stupid plastic helmet. What a missed opportunity.

He started off as Fu Manchu and today he's an Asian evil business with his evil rings of power.

Eh, even early on he wasn't Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu is this shriveled, effeminate, sneaky character. The Mandarin was more of a Black Mask meets Vandal Savage type. Arguably he was a deconstruction of that archetype, since he kinda looked like Fu Manchu, but was revealed in just his second appearance to be basically the Anti-Stark, an aristocrat who squandered his fiefdom's fortune to train himself into a science and martial arts super-soldier. In personality and methods he's really the opposite of Fu Manchu, masculine where Fu Manchu is effeminate, crude where Fu Manchu is polite, physical where Fu Manchu is mental.

I'd prefer it if they had gone almost Ledger Joker with it. Have him use a cheap mask like anyone could buy, and creepy-up the details. Make it look like what it was: a regular old mask crudely modified by someone who is nuts. It's not like he could go to his companies R&D department and get them to design him something professional. All he could do was grab the stuff designed for the military, add a cheap mask, and do a bit of cheap, clumsy, crazy modifying of that mask. The realism would have been super-creepy.

Annihilus and Blastaar don't quite fit the "low budget" scheme.

Looks to me like it will be (and could be totally wrong) but if they are doing an origin from UFF, it will be Mole Man and Doom. Not sure if we will see robot insects...but I guess we could.

It's definitely based on the UFF comics and origin. There's no question about it now.

And honestly, we should've seen it coming from the day they announced that the UFF co-creator Mark Millar would be in charge of their Cinematic Universe (presumably when they still thought they could do one). And of course, every other casting and development on this project.

Like it or not, we are getting a full on, Ultimate based FF movie; Something that NO ONE wanted.

If the rumors are, Anihilus was going the be the villain at one point, but the budget cut and subsequent script rewrite changed that.

Dr Doom was also going to be the villain at one point, but another budget cut and subsequent script rewrite changed that. Now we are getting Dr Duct tape

I don't think they are even using any of the comics as real inspiration. It would seem the director just wants to do his own thing.

Thanks - i just freaking shot coffee through my nose! LOL

Yep. And this is an accurate representation of that wall:

Except me!

Saw these posts in another thread about a superhero adaption with a costume reveal and it made me think of this

As long as its a protosuit, it's all good, but if that's indeed the direction they're going for, I'm not really diggin it.

Not bad if it's indeed a prototype

It's a prototype, I'm quite confident of that. It looks like it's something that he threw together. I'm quite sure that we'll see a progression/evolution of the costume, with the classic being the endgame.

This is without a doubt the prototype.

Seeing this costume and thinking it will be permanent is like seeing this
