And I'd like to think Fox knows that. They would be silly setting that date if they think this reboot wouldn't make a profit. Anyway time will tell. They got a talented cast and I am sure Simon already has ideas for the sequel, doing the sequel would be much easier to them.

One thing to keep in mind is that the sequel, if it ever comes to pass, will be much more expensive. By going back to the origin story, Trank and company were able to avoid having a full time Thing and power displays throughout the film.

If you add Latveria, the Surfer and/or Annihilus for "Fant4stic 2: The Rise of Domashev" you could be looking at a $50 million or more bump in production costs. Even if Fant4stic squeaks out a profit the sequel is far from a sure thing.

The other thing to remember is studio accounting which always seem to defy the laws of the universe, studios claim that films that did poorly made money while those that were successful made the studio nothing. Of course I think that that tends to depend on if the studio has to share the profits, if the film on paper appears to have made nothing then the studio doesn't need to share.

I'm more interested in who the director will be than a release date (that will almost certainly change before it actually comes to be).

If/when we get a director, that will be something to talk about, but a date isn't anything more than somebody at Fox saying: "Yeah, we expect to make a sequel."

I hope Josh Trank returns if not Matthew Vaughn though Fox already gave Vaughn another CB property to work on.

Well I hope that doesnt work out, he didnt attend the Star Wars event so that could be a sign.

I really think Trank's take on this will be received well by the critics so I hope he stays on Fantastic Four. Filming for the sequel should start next year so Fox should secure him asap. And I think Kinberg and Fox already mapped out their plans for the next X-Men and Fantastic Four films.

He may have dropped out of star war gig due to his no show at star wars event.

Hopefully he does sequel after this film becomes the new fc/Rise of planet of the apes.

There can be a lot of smoke and mirrors in accounting anyway. Though, movie studios seem to use a lot more. I loved Pacific Rim, but I would love to know what justified a sequel. Thomas Tull must be some sort of accounting wizard.

First Class and Rise were prequels/sorta reboots of well established, successful film franchises. Tranks's Fant4stic is a contemporary reimagining of a failed duology that has gone out of its way to alienate longtime fans of the classic source material. It has virtually nothing in common with the other successful FOX franchises.

Once again i have to point out the reboot isn't one that has nothing to do with FF.It's based on ultimate FF.You may not like it but that is what they are doing.

FC was prequel that was dismissed by many and rise of the planet of the apes was reboot/reimaging that was dismissed by many.

If this film makes enough for a sequel, I do not think it will make enough to warrant it coming out in June of 2017. It's scheduled a week before Toy Story 4 and 2 weeks before Wonder Woman. It will likely be another August release, or something on either end of the summer movie season.

They already moved it up a week from the 2nd to move further from Star Wars

To quote myself from a few days ago (just to save the time of typing it all out again:

Yeah, most elements of this are very different from UFF which leaves me scratching my head when people seem to think it's faithful to it. It is very roughly based on UFF, but the story and characters seem very different. For example:

1. Doom has a different name and the character seems very different and the 'post-transformation' Doom isn't recognizable. And from what we know or has been rumored or we can infer from the trailer, Doom's story isn't close to what we saw in UFF.

2. There is no Arthur Molekevic who was a key character in UFF and the FF's origin. We have a Harvey Elder (616 Moleman), but his character seems completely different from either the UFF or 616 character.

3. In UFF they didn't have missions into the N-Zone tied into their origin. Their first large scale experiment blew up and resulted in their powers.

4. In UFF, Reed joined the Baxter Building as a child. Here we see him apparently as an adult wide-eyed as he sees the Baxter Building for the first time.

5. There weren't any 'containment suits' in UFF.

etc. etc. etc. This film may be closer to UFF than 616, but it certainly isn't very faithful to UFF.

Except for some very superficial elements, I see very little in either trailer that reminds me of UFF either visually or content-wise.

That one didn't get a release date unlike this one. And this is Fox not Sony. Anyway, I don't think Fox would have given it a release date if they were on the fence about doing a sequel. They also hired Simon Kinberg to develop more Fantastic Four/X-Men movies. Sure they could cancel it in the future, but as of right now, its part of their current schedule.

The sequel isn't greenlit. They have a date reserved , it means nothing. It only means something when they allocate dollars and hire a script writer, director and producer.

Before we start talking about dates of the sequels, and movies being moved. There are a couple things to consider the date of the sequel is just a placeholder. It can change and flat out be cancelled if the movie doesn't do well. Secondly if this movie is successfull critically and financially the momentum the sequel will gather will make it the movie, studios move their films around. If this is a good movie that gets better word of mouth from critics and movie goes alike. Any movie around it's date and on it has to reconsider their plans.

Also as a Star Wars fan I hope he does the stand alone film. I know Kinberg who is writing Rogue one, wrote episodes of Rebels, is also a fan of Trank.

What about Trank's Star Wars film? I don't think he's available.
I wouldn't mind the cast coming back...mainly because I don't want another "reboot"...but I don't think I want Trank back. I'm ok with some of his changes, but it's pretty clear that he doesn't really care about the history of this family. (counting down to the rescue of Trank...lol)

I get the impression that Trank won't be back even if the sequel happens. Of late, the cast and producers have been hyping up Kinberg (who wasn't even the original writer, but seems to have rewritten the script during filming) much more than Trank. Kinberg's almost being pushed as their big Marvel guy in general. I could easily see Fox ditching Trank but keeping Kinberg.

I agree on that, a plus on him though is that judging by his comments so far about the comics I get the idea that he cares deeply about the family aspect of the team, we need someone who cares about that side, but can get it across to the big screen as well as doing the factual history of the team well.

Staying positive though, I think it'll be good

Just watched the new trailer. The movie actually looks pretty good to me but I don't like Doom's look. He reminds me of Destro in that awful GI Joe movie.

I don't really mind how Doom will look in the movie. As long as the character is well done and well acted, i'm fine with it. Obviously comic accurate costume would be more epic, but i still care a lot more about how he is characterized. Marvel Studios has given us many cool looking villains, with barely any personality, and i will always choose good character rather than good looking character.

If you can get both, like with Magneto or with Ultron, that's perfect but happens too rarely :'D

Yeah, my concern is I want him to be wearing armor and I'm not sure if what we're seeing is armor or organic metallic skin.

I'm not a fan of the look, but if it's armor, that's the important thing and I can live with it.

If he has 'powers' instead of armor, those powers will be limited. If he has armor, his abilities are only limited by his brain and imagination which are basically infinite.

What are the main differences between UFF and 616 Doom's powers? I'm only familiar with 616 Doom so i get confused haha.

I just hope if they will replace Trank, I hope they pick a director with a good track record. Maybe Fox should hire the director of their film Birdman to direct the sequel.

Well just the fact that he had powers is a difference. His armor in UFF is organic. For some ridiculous reason the accident made him 'grow' armor that gives him strength and toughness.

He also had some kind of porcupine quills or something.

He wrapped a green blanket around himself and had some sort of cult of homeless people that he was ruler over or something.

UFF was so bad I didn't make it too far before giving up, so someone else might be able to tell you more.

I won't know if I want Trank to come back till after I see this. However I like his vision for the movie, it's very creative. The shots in his films they are eye catching to me the way he frames the actors. That is the kind of thing I don't notice too often and the guys that do I love. I don't know if I'll ever become Trank fan boy like I am with Tarantino, or Scorsese. He is however on my director watchlist along with Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Matt Reeves, and Dan Gilroy.
