Fant4stic I think this deserves its own thread...Josh Trank denounces Fantastic Four

I have no problem with Trank acknowledging that he doesn't like the movie,

but "it would've received great reviews" isn't helping since he's not a proven talent yet.

That being said, if his next couple movies are really good, then that statement might just retroactively feel really honest.

I still think that tweet is extremly unprofessional. I really dont care how aweful the experience was, but its not your money what is at stake.
There is a time to adress the issues. But not now.

Trank needs to man up and take responsibility for his own crappy film. Not toss all the blame on someone else.

I don't think certain people in this thread realize how disasterous Trank's tweet was.

This is not a "way to go moment," Josh Trank completely ****ed his career. He was already on thin ice before the tweet and now he is under it. That tweet wasn't brave, it was utterly foolish in every way possible. Fox could actually sue his ass. Sue him!

Plenty of directors have had awful experiences with big studio films and none of them acted like Josh Trank, none of those directors torpedoed their own film on opening weekend.

To be honest, I believe this has happened on smaller movies well before the release date. But not on "big tentpoles" like this one. And because of the publicity surrounding it, I think it'll backfire big time on Trank.

It's a M E S S.

Simon Kinberg got Trank fired if we're to believe the rumors.
And if you believe that, he fired him for good reasons. Trank was unprofessional, wouldn't speak to anyone, destroyed a house, ruined the production and apparently has a substance abuse problem that he allowed to get in the way of making the film.

But yeah, lets ignore that part. Doesn't fit your ridiculous narrative.

It seems like the quote with the David Fincher comparison from the original post has been debunked as bogus, but it's an interesting comparison to make. I read a set report from Alien 3 from back when the film was in production, and it sounded like a hellish experience, a half dozen Fox producers literally giving notes and rewriting the shooting script while scenes were being shot. And even in the interviews you can tell Fincher is seething, and it comes out at times ("This is an incredible opportunity for me. A fact of which I'm frequently reminded," was one great Fincher quote to come from the article), but he doesn't outright disown the film, he gets on with it like a professional. Also, while the end product is quite far removed from his original vision and not a patch on the two classic films that preceded it in the series, Fincher's direction still ensures it's actually a good film on its own merits and it has some degree of craft, quality, and creative vision behind it.

Oh for sure...he pretty much burned any bridges he had with Fox and their associates.

And I bet you anything he didn't "leave" Star Wars. He was let go. Disney could smell the stink from FF a mile away and wanted to get as far away from him as possible.

He was not let go on Star Wars. He was fired. He burned bridges with Disney as well. The Celebration situation was ridiculous.

Hollywood doesn't care about smaller films as much as they do blockbusters. He could trash a smaller film and nobody would care but the second he helps a giant blockbuster flop is the second he is unemployable.

Eh, I think it's possible for him to still find work.

I really do hope, that if the last part is true, Trank gets help and then maybe tries for a comeback on the indie scene in the next few years.

Drugs are bad, kids.... I got a heaping boatful of that this week.

Yeah, I got some bad drug related news about someone close to me this week. And I'm loathe to open up about anything on here but it's heartbreaking to me, it sucks.

And please nobody pm me about it, I don't want to discuss it right now but I just thought I'd say that.

He'll get hired. At what level, remains to be seen. If he does well, he could always work his way back up. There is always a studio looking to make a splash, and I can already see the redemption story.

What Landis has said...

HEY, it’s 1 AM. You know what, **** it. Let’s be real here.

Chronicle was an incredibly rare and easy ride. I loved writing the script. I enjoyed our producer, John Davis, and our exec, Steve. I also loved collaborating with Josh, who I think is brilliant, and whose ideas inspired my script. I fought hard for him to direct. But Chronicle was a complete fluke. We had so much control because the movie was, in relation to other movies that year, TINY. Some holes opened up in Fox’s slate and Chronicle was cheap and unique, so they were kind enough to make it. Only took 6 months.

At the time, I was like “THIS IS ****ING INCREDIBLE I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING.” I’d sold scripts, but it was my first greenlight. Josh, who’d been for-hire editor and whose only experience behind the camera had been a web series, was a smart, fun collaborator.

During the shooting of the film, I had almost no input, but I was lucky in that the studio and Josh stuck astonishingly tight to my script. But again, even this is a fluke. It was an original idea, a dark character movie with a first time director. Fluke. Freak of nature. But I didn’t know that and I’m sure Josh didn’t know that either. In the five years since I sold Chronicle, I’ve learned the hard way.

You take huge hits in this industry, creatively, but that’s only after you’ve been given the opportunity to take huge swings, which is rare. A movie like Fantastic Four, an assignment with a lot riding on it, was always going to have a tremendous amount of cooks in the kitchen. People always ask me when I’m gonna write a superhero movie. I have. I’ve gotten those jobs. They’re very intense and stressful.

As a writer, I’ve been lucky to work on many, many projects, and seen how different and how hard each road can be, for five and a half years. Josh didn’t get that chance, and his second major project, after one with total freedom, was one with intense oversight. So I don’t think anyone’s wrong or right, necessarily, and I don’t imagine anyone cares about my opinion. But I do think it’s important to say that if you’re not prepared going in to not FIGHT like hell, but WORK like hell, it’s gonna get ugly.

No one is trying to make a bad movie. This job is only very occasionally romantic. Don’t let it own you, try not to let it hurt you. Because sometimes it’s so much ****ing fun. But it’s still a job.”

Well you can scratch ever seeing chronicle 2 ever being made. Guy is a total egomaniac, and just set his career on fire.

And a year ago, he didn't have jack ****. They were still shooting the film.

Thats part of my problem as well, it seems so childish for him to say that compounded by the fact that there is no way to prove or disprove his assertion that people would have loved it. That he specifically mentioned critics makes it clear this is a knee jerk reaction to the reviews.

So sorry to hear that, SPIDEY.... I feel you on this!

I've been using this board as a distraction from RL drama... Needless to say, y'all are helping me forget stuff ;)

Like everything, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I read a while back Kinbrg & Co. were brought in because Trank was having issues finishing up the movie. The staff at that particular time received very little communication from Trank and were witnessing very odd behavior from him.

In any case, I bet Trank just broke under the pressure. Kinberg & Co. came in and tried to "fix" what they thought was wrong. Both sides are major pieces in this ***** sandwich.....
