I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I kinda wish it was a crossover with Spidey instead but a win is a win for more Gargoyles content.
Yeah Spider-Man or Daredevil would work better than the F4, but they got a movie coming out sooner.

I still think Gargoyles, Buffy and the X-Files could all work in the MCU.

But that’s too much brand synergy.

James Gunn
has revealed more about the DCU movie that was scrapped due to issues with the script, even though a director was already attached.

Last month, the DC Studios co-CEO revealed that he'd "killed" a project that had already been greenlit because "the screenplay wasn't ready," although which project that might have been remains under wraps.

"We had a movie that was greenlit. We got [the] second draft and [the] third draft, and it just wasn't changing. It wasn't getting better," Gunn said in a new interview with NPR. "It was staying in the same place. And I said, we can't make this film. We can't. It's not good. We know it's not good.

"Just because we have a good director attached and a good screenwriter, it doesn't mean the script is working. Everyone is going to be upset at the end of this. It's going to come out, the movie's not going to be good. Director's going to look bad, screenwriter's going to look bad and we're going to look bad. So I don't want to have this. We're not going to make the movie. And so we killed it."

I’m now getting the feeling that the cancelled film is Swamp Thing. Bummer! :csad:

I hope not. I am (or was) really looking forward to that one. And it would certainly fit well into the “Gods and Monsters” theme. But maybe Swamp Thing is/was planned to be Elseworlds? I’m not sure.

Also, if we are going to get Vertigo characters in the DCU, I hope Jamie Campbell Bower is on the shortlist for John Constantine. British, blond, chain smoker, is in an actual rock band, fantastic actor who is great in genre stuff. Screw Keanu. I hope that’s the movie that was cancelled.

Finally got around to watching my very first Harry Potter movie! My roommate has been telling me for years how "magical" they are (ha-ho!) and we recently re-upped our Crave subscription, so I figured I'd give Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone a chance.

My verdict? It was okay...

Just to contextualize this a bit, I've never read any of the Harry Potter novels and obviously didn't grow up with the films, so I think it's safe to say that I have zero emotional attachment to this IP. In fact, my only pervious exposure to the Wizarding World franchise was the first couple Fantastic Beasts films, which I thought were merely 'okay' as well. Also, a friend here at The Hype recently told me about J. K. Rowling's transphobic views which I had been previously unaware of, and this undoubtedly influenced my opinion further...

Anyway, I'll probably chip away at this franchise over time (there's like eight Harry Potter movies alone!) but I don't really have any burning desire to continue with it at this point...

I recently added the following to my digital collection:

Thunderbolts*
Kick-Ass
Venom
Let There Be Carnage
Deadpool
Deadpool 2
Deadpool & Wolverine

If all goes according to plan I should be seeing Superman next Tuesday or Wednesday evening! If I can't mobilize the troops in time I'll support the film by purchasing it at full price on digital like I did with Sinners. It's already available for pre-order on Prime...

Forbes is reporting that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will indeed be more "Street-Level", which is honestly what I was hoping for...

James Gunn's recent comments on the Supergirl script are getting me excited for next summer already! The new DCU seems to be off to a good start so we'll see if WBD can continue the momentum...

With all that out of the way, it's time for post catch-up!

I didn't grow up with the franchise, and to be honest, I fell asleep during the first two movies
The child actors were really rough in the early going, outside of maybe Draco

:hehe:

But by time you get to Prisoner of Azkaban things'll pick up

I'm sure it'll be retconned in Peacemaker or Waller. :o

I hope so. Maybe Flag Sr. can sacrifice himself so we somehow get Flag Jr. back. Kinnaman is a much better actor than Grillo anyway. And his Flag is a better character (as long as you just pretend Ayer’s Suicide Squad doesn’t exist lol).

I actually thought Kinnaman was one of the better parts of Ayer's Suicide Squad to the point where I was bummed out when he died. The gratuitous up close up shot of the knife going into his heart was unnecessary though. :o

Robocop really deserved better.

It’s funny. As bad as that Robocop remake was, I really liked Kinnaman in it. I liked that he didn’t just try to emulate Peter Welles and did his own thing. I don’t know that it really worked but that was more due to the bad script.

I haven't seen the Robocop remake but it sounds like it probably should have been a legacy sequel instead with Peter Weller returning and Kinnaman playing the adult version of Murphy's son.
