I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I loved The Fantastic Four: First Steps enough that it just snuck in to my MCU Top 10.

I knew it was going to be the best Fantastic Four movie but I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. As I suspected, it very much follows a lot of the same beats as Rise of the Silver Surfer but I can forgive that considering it's okay to basically give yourself a redo if the new final product is an improvement. I had very little complaints about it. There are some, but really it's more about what the movie could have used more of and not anything that was blatantly off about it. I thought the cast was great. Everyone got time to shine. Vanessa Kirby stole the show, Pedro was great, EMB was dare I say even more perfect as Ben than Chiklis and Quinn honestly surprised me as Johnny. I thought he'd be the odd one out but I really liked him in the role. And Galactus was absolutely terrifying. I want to see him back ASAP.

@Shinobi Shaw I hope you're pleased with yourself. All that talking it up paid off. :o

Drizzy, you always get it.

I'm just happy that Marvel finished off strong with their film slate. Rough start with Brave New World but Thunderbolts was a breath of fresh air and Fantastic Four was a desperately needed back to basics self contained thrill ride.

I'm even happier that Marvel and DC both stuck the landing this month. I really didn't know how it was going to go down but I'm relieved that they both delivered. I'm not as optimistic about the road ahead for Marvel but at the end of the day, we finally got a good Fantastic Four movie.

They still have Doomsday, Secret Wars, and whatever miniseries they're limping out the barn with...

Even if Doomsday completely ****s the bed when it comes to the story, I'll at least enjoy watching the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts New Avengers interact.
When Spider-Man has to save the MCU slate... Again. :o

I also cannot wait for @Sithborg's essay comparison of First Steps and The Incredibles. :awesome:

Along those lines, stay tuned for my Venn Diagram comparing Rise of the Silver Surfer and First Steps. Link in bio. :o
@Drizzle works for ScreenRant confirmed. :o

All I know is WBD or Disney better snatch Giacchino for more scores.

So when is the Deadpool/Spider-Man/Daredevil/Human Torch/Scarlet Witch movie coming out? :o

Why, do you know someone who's hiring? :o

Giacchino gave us a banger Batman score and he did it again with Fantastic Four. He's kind of a pseudo-in house Marvel guy after F4, Doctor Strange and Spidey. I think maybe there's one I'm forgetting?

Nah Thunderbolts was still the best MCU movie this year. It was the only one with any real depth, which I would think should be a minimum requirement for the X-Men.

Respectfully disagree my friend. Thunderbolts was admirable, but just because one director is equipped to handle one set of heroes, doesn’t mean he can do another.

The Uncanny X-Men and the New Avengers are apples and oranges. Shakman is much more suited for the former.

Werewolf By Night, aka his greatest contribution???

Something that alien shouldn't look so human. :p Sure, not a cloud, but not human either.

In what way? Genuine question. The only thing he brought to this movie was an aesthetic, imo. The humor was flat, the action was extremely pedestrian, and the emotional beats were very surface-y. The production design and score were A+, but those aren't what the X-Men really need. They need someone who won't be afraid to get into the more uncomfortable themes, and willing to go for the gut punch. That's definitely more the Thunderbolts guy's territory, I feel.

Shakman would get my vote because he can handle emotion, he gets team dynamics, he understands how to build your antagonist, and most of all I love the way he develops his female characters. Schreier does his thing in two of those aspects, but he doesn’t deliver in the same way as Shakman.

Also love how Shakman handles diversity and how he includes black/POC into his narratives.

But that’s just my two cents.

Please tell me you are not talking about the one black lady whose name I didn't even get in this movie???? :funny: She was like the only character with a speaking role besides the F4 and Galactus/Surfer in the whole movie (and the TV host?), so I guess that's something, but damn, that's a low bar considering she did absolutely not a single thing of note.

Also, Yelena is THE most compelling female character in the MCU at present. By far.

Now I love Yelena, but I beg your pardon?

Put it to you like this, I’d trust Shakman more with Storm and his FF black lady more than Thunderbolts dude did with Ghost and her 3 lines in the movie lol.

You must have forgotten when MoM tanked the entire character of Wanda by turning her into Tom Jane in Arrested Development. :o So yeah, Yelena's waaaaay more compelling, sorry. Will have to just agree to disagree on...everything else too lol.

I'm not even a particular fan of the Thunderbolts guy whose name I will never remember, just really over Matt Shakman at this point. :funny: And while I'm pretty much over the X-Men too, the childhood fan in me still wants to see them handled with some proper depth and not Shakman's surface-level BS.

But we can agree that if Bitsie Tulloch and Rachel B ever got together for Crisis On Infinite Metropolises they’d kill it. ;)
