I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

The Dark Knight's score came on while I was driving last night, which between that and these rankings, gave me the itch to rewatch. Obviously so much of this movie is just engraved into my brain as awesome, but I tend to forget how brilliant it really is on the whole sometimes.

The ending with Harvey is pure peak. Eckhart's performance is hard to top. "Lie, like I lied" gives chills every time.

Not exactly The Dark Knight but me when "Molossus" from the Begins soundtrack plays in the car:

Along those lines, I've actually been inspired to rewatch a bunch of CBMs after seeing Superman and Fantastic Four, from the Donner Superman movies to the MCU's greatest hits. Those two in particular really breathed some life into the genre again and it's gotten me all nostalgic.

Was just able to see F4 tonight and really enjoyed it. F4 has been one of my favorite superhero teams since forever so it was breath of fresh air to come out of the theater for the first time feeling mostly satisfied. I still have some quibbles but for the most it hit the main marks for me to be happy overall.

And just seeing the big man in all his glory was amazing.

Shinobi is right, 828 should be the sacred timeline moving forward

But I’d take it a step further and put the F4, X-Men, Spider-Man, Hulk and the rest of the NY street level heroes at the forefront of the narrative

The Avengers go back to the loser table where they belong, and they stay there

So 118 Domestic and 100 International for a 218 OW globally. So Superman wins the OW battle, and will likely gross more. But still a W in my book here. As of now, pending actual, that is the 3rd best OW for the MCU since Phase 5.

We shall see how it legs out, but all in all a solid OW. Not a home run, but solid no less.

The last comparisons we have between the two properties

2005-2006
Fantastic Four (2005): $56.1M opening / $154.7M domestic life
Superman Returns (2006): $52.5M opening / $200.1M domestic life

2013-2015
Man of Steel (2013): $116.6M opening / $291.0M domestic life
Fantastic Four (2015): $25.7M opening / $56.2M domestic life

I personally find it intriguing how fast social media is taking to the Fantastic Four (as I figured they would). Specifically Sue, Big G, and Johnny. The tide is steadily turning.... :o

The fact that we’re living in a time where the FANTASTIC FOUR are buzzing on social media amongst normies at all is kind of astonishing.
My TikTok feed is now polluted with H.E.R.B.I.E. and I'm not mad about it at all.

I'm excited that Marvel got their groove back with this (and Thunderbolts* to a lesser extent even though it underperformed) and next at bat is Spidey in a year which is guaranteed easy money at this point. At least with the FF there's SOMETHING to look forward to in the MCU's future.

But Chip, haven't you seen Endgame? EVERYONE in the MCU is an honorary Avenger. :o

You know, I was deeply worried about Spider-Man, but recent news has gotten me back on board. I am excited for it. I have enjoyed most of Marvel's output this year. Feels like we are finally getting back on track.

I am still deeply worried about Doomsday though. But at least, I will get to spend more time with my favorite new characters again

Listen, happy for y'all that like it, but that was just not for me. Joseph Quinn still blows. Outside of Spidey and Reeves' Batman, I think I'm done with superhero movies.

As far as the future of the MCU, I'm only looking forward to wherever the FF goes next, Spidey's next confirmed street level outing with the Punisher and Denzel in Black Panther 3.

To hell with the Avengers and their cash grabs, I'm more concerned about my X-Men. I do not have a good feeling about them like I did with the FF, but at this point, it is what it is.

Just do right by Cyclops, Storm and Rogue.

Check us out agreeing with each other, my good sir.

Both Superman and FF being in the same OW neighborhood is about as best case a scenario as you could hope for. It's a solid bounce back for the genre after a rocky couple of years not including Deadpool & Wolverine.

Like I said elsewhere, the only thing you can really do is manage your budgets well and make good movies and hope that translates to higher BO in the struggling markets. Yeah, China and such may never come back. But you can get interest back in some of these other ones. Just have to build that house of cards back up. That's your long term answer. Marvel's reliance on spending 100 mil to get a RDJ back isn't a long term solution. That's not sustainable
