I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Gunn is absolutely splitting hairs and there is an almost 0% chance The Batman: Part II isn’t functionally ‘in production’. I’d be shocked if there isn’t already casting done.
To be "in production" would mean they're already in pre-production and I reaaally don't think they are. To whatever extent there's casting I think it's more a matter of The Penguin characters carrying over, like Mark Strong. Even the first The Batman didn't actually sign most of their main cast members aside from Rob until like 4 months before filming so I'm really not sure why you'd be shocked lol

How can they be in production if they are in the pre stages of production? It's not called pre-production because they are currently in production!

Gunn is basically calling being in "pre-production" as counting as being in production, so I was just using that language.

I love how whenever we get an update on The Batman Part 2 via James Gunn it always have to devolve into this sort of conversation in which people go "Actually the head of DC Studios somehow doesn't know what's going on with one of the biggest productions of that studio". Just the brightest conversations here on SHH.

He does know, but ultimately Gunn is a salesman who sort of just says **** that makes him sound smart and cool and like he’s not repeating past mistakes to nerds. I don’t know why anyone would take him seriously - he’s a hype man first and foremost who has lied repeatedly.

And what the hell would he be selling here lol. A lot of your overt skepticism over every single James Gunn statement seems extremely thoughtless to me, like "He says it so he must be lying" even if there's quite genuinely nothing to point in that direction whatsoever and even if there's not a reason for him to do so. And I don't even have any idea why you are skeptical of the idea they aren't yet on pre-production when the last thing we knew about a month ago is that the script still isn't done, also have zero clue why you think casting already begun for the film when there's no signs of that being the case either and doesn't even coincide with how Matt went about things for the first film.

If The Batman 2 was already with a completed and greenlit script he'd just say it. No idea what you think the angle here would be about just lying about that.

It’s the reason why it was pushed back
The reason it was pushed back was because the script wasn't done yet, which still isn't and we have absolutely zero reason to think it is now when even if you are completely conspiracy-brained surrounding James Gunn and think he lies about everything, Andy Serkis also said it wasn't done. I don't doubt they probably have a rough estimate on when they plan to shoot, but that's very different from them already having begun the pre-production process, which they haven't and there's zero reason to think they have.

I mean if you want to split hairs and say a movie with a probably 85% compete script, actors signed up to return and that’s planning to shoot soon isn’t in production, I guess.

Well we know it's not in production yet because the person in charge of greenlighting it for production said it isn't lol. And also because there's nothing that points to things being any other ****ing way!

He didn't say it's not in production, he didn't include it in the list of movies in production. This is the game Gunn likes to play.

And what evidence is there for the film actually already being in pre-production, dude?
