I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Having watched the 2nd episode of Caped Crusader, I'm extremely excited by the prospect of Clayface being the main villain. I think they could do something really terrifying and suspenseful with him. It would play nicely into the theme of identity as well. As much as I'd like to see Mr. Freeze, I think I'm starting to lean towards Clayface as being my #1 pick for the star villain of the sequel.

After binging Caped Crusader last night, I must say I'm really really actively hoping that if Matt takes anything from that show over to the Batverse is 110% that take on the Bruce Wayne playboy persona. Bruce Timm and Hamish Linklater came up with an amazing way of showcasing it.

Pattinson would 100% /kill/ a performance like this (obviously adapted to modern times) and it's extremely easy for me to imagine Rob's Bruce being exactly like this if he has to start going out in public and putting on that front. Rehearsing lines in front of the mirror, trying to perfect his charming playboy smile, researching as much as he can so he can blend into that world as best as possible and create that persona. 2024-07-25 20_33_09-_Batman_ Caped Crusader (Amazon Prime)_ Animated Series News & Discussion ...png
Even Bruce Timm noticed the weird spiritual connection there.

I think it's set up pretty nicely in The Batman too. Beyond just the fact that Bruce should obviously be more involved with philantropy, if he had been using a playboy facade like this he probably would've discovered of the 44 Below a lot earlier and been able to research it himself without having to rely on Selina.

Also as much as I loved the emo Bruce take we saw in The Batman, I think it'd be an absolute shame to have an actor as versatile as Robert (who also happens to be a sex symbol) and not have him do the whole playboy shtick at some point, as I think there's a lot of interesting things he could do with it as an actor.

Completely agree. I love caped crusader’s take on bruce, and robert would absolutely nail that interpretation in live action. Praying this is the direction they go!

I can imagine a moment like the first video here but with Pattinson's Bruce soooo well should they go the public persona/playboy facade thing:

Especially this part:

I wouldn’t be mad at it but that just feels like Bale to me. What I’d like to see from Rob is something closer to Keaton in Returns where he’s an eccentric but very assertive philanthropist.

That being said: the big distinction would be that Bale’s Bruce with his martyr complex was perfectly happy to look like a dick and at times even have fun with it whereas it would make Battinson completely and utterly miserable. Which is very very funny.

Yup, I was just gonna say, is that not pretty much exactly what the Bale version was all about?

I guess the way to differentiate it is to make it more of a central character arc for him to have to figure out how to use the public persona and Wayne name to his advantage and help Gotham. Bale's Bruce just kind of immediately understands that to an extent. Lucius probably wouldn't have entrusted him to with "borrowing" super secret military tech in the first place if they hadn't immediately hit it off with such a charming rapport, for instance. I don't think he would have been as laissez faire about it if Bruce was giving weirdo creeper vibes.

At the end of the day each version of Batman is still riffing on a lot of the same stuff. I think sometimes it's as much about getting to a familiar place via a different route and exploring it through a different angle vs. trying to completely reinvent the wheel.

I’m not really sure how functionally different that is from Bale’s Bruce.

Bale's Bruce just kind of immediately understands that to an extent. Lucius probably wouldn't have entrusted him to with using secret shelved military tech in the first place if they hadn't immediately hit it off with such a charming rapport, for instance. It doesn't mean he was a well-adjusted individual, but I think he had a more innate ability to think more three dimensionally about what he was trying to accomplish vs. just "I will punch crime away". Which was a major plus for me for that characterization.

Well, that's the huge difference though. You can say that it's technically the same (Both use the playboy persona as a facade) but in practice it'd be extremely, extremely different. You never felt that it was particularly hard for Bale's Bruce to activate the playboy persona; quite the opposite, it felt like it came really easy to him from day #1 and he didn't really have to obsess over the ways to pull it off or to really make it a performance. It never quite felt like Bale's Bruce had to rehearse lines in front of the mirror (regardless of the John Blake quote) or had to go out of his way to make a completely fake voice, or anything like that.

With Pattinson's Bruce he'd have to obsess over it. He'd have to be extremely calculated and extreme with it. It's not really hard to imagine internal monologues of him talking about how he has to approach it with the same exact intensity there was during the opening monologue on the first film except here he'd literally be doing that whole thing over simply having to go to a ball and act like a playboy.

And there is such a huge, huge shift between him having to do the playboy thing and what he was in the first film that I honestly vastly prefer it to the whole "he can just be a reserved philantropist" thing. My problem with him going for the reserved philantropist route is that there is no conflict with that, there is no interesting character stuff that can be explored with that because that is something that'd indeed come very easy to this Bruce. And because the shift to the playboy thing would be extremely radical I also think that'd absolutely make for a waaaay more interesting and challenging performance from Pattinson, which is exactly the ways I think he should be pushed. He's an extremely versatile actor, it's better to use that to its fullest extent.

Also I'd argue that the thing with Bale's Bruce is that it sometimes felt like the playboy persona was, at least in terms of speech and all that, closer to his real self than even Batman was. Not really in terms of morals, but if you watch any of the Lucius Fox scenes in the trilogy he was suave and charming even there despite the fact Lucius knew his identity, and there were times were even with Alfred he got kinda playful (I mean, the "damn good television" line was already pure public Bruce material despite the fact that it was literally talking in reference to him being Batman) very different from the way he behaved in literally any scene as Batman where he had the most ridiculous intense voice and behavior. That's not really what'd be the case with Pattinson, where you'd have to imagine as soon as he talks to anyone that really knows him he'd immediately switch back to the same "emo" way of speaking and a darker voice.

I agree with this. I'd love to see Bruce having to "get into character" and switch from his real persona to a fake playboy one. Bale did it pretty effortlessly. A great way to differentiate that would be to show how hard Bruce has to work to make it seem so genuine.

I kinda was hoping for The Court of Owls in The Batman Part II, tbh. I haven't been in the loop with this film, so I don't know what's been announced/rumored for it and what not.

All we know about The Batman 2 is it doesn't have a script yet.

I'd be willing to bet they at least have 40 pages of script.
40 pages lol. I understand Reeves is slow but that’s an absurd level of cynicism. They could have multiple full drafts for all we know, just not a finalized polished one.

I think people are seriously underestimating Matt here. For him to be confident enough to publicly say that they’re shooting the film next year, that should be enough to show that he’s pretty far along.

Also, be aware that a script is never really “finished”. It can change at any given moment. I am curious about what part of the script is the most challenging for him, but I have no doubt that he knows exactly what he wants with this film.

Yeah i think it comes down to how impatient we've been with the process and the lack of news. From some other forums or social media sources it feels like the film is in limbo. Now that we have the Penguin tv show on the way and Batman Caped Crusader having a positive reception people would like some information on Part2. Me personally, im not expecting anything substantial to be revealed until early next year but i do trust Reeves with his vision.

It's really obvious that he said this to reassure everyone and to scare himself into getting things done. :o

Well, the film HAS to shoot next year if it wants to meet its release date. And next year can easily mean June-October, which wouldn't be unreasonable.

Other than the 40s setting, I thought there were so many good elements of Caped Crusader that Reeves could lift/adapt for his live action sequels.

Lol seeing Harvey’s arc in the season makes me think just give us another Two Face story.

But, in the very least, Rupert Thorne.
