I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

The more well-received Reeves’ saga becomes, the harder it’s becoming for Gunn & co. to justify Brave and the Bold. I’m not opposed to a DCU version of Batman, but I think he should be relegated to supporting roles for the time being.

Think Black Widow in the MCU—she was a marquee character for 11 years across 1 Iron Man movie, 2 Captain America movies, and 4 Avengers movies before getting a solo feature.

I have to say, despite loving Farrell in The Batman I wasn't super excited about The Penguin after seeing the early teasers because it seemed like it had the potential to go a bit on the schlockier side of mob/gangster media in a way that could feel tired. Definitely looking forward to it a lot more than I expected to be after seeing how incredibly well it's been received, and I thought the last trailer looked a lot more promising too.

If they really want to set a DCU Batman apart from The Batman Universe while that’s still going on, without causing any confusion or any problems, the idea occurred to me awhile back… animation.

Gunn has already made clear that animation and live action will co-exist in the DCU, so hit us with a big screen animated Batman and Robin movie and potential sequels until Reeves and Pattinson have wrapped up. Then hit us with a live action World’s Finest that is so killer it wipes the bad taste of BVS out of all our mouths for good.

It’s so embarrassing that they’re even doing another Batman franchise. Obviously all these big IP projects are purely mercenary ventures first and foremost but it’s crazy how much DCU Batman has no justification to exist outside of ticking a box on Gunn’s deeply lame and outdated plan for the DCU.

Alright, settle down. :o

But guys Charlie Brown (fandom) is gonna get the football (successful DC movies) this time!

You act like DC’s never had successful movies. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and even the f***ing Suicide Squad have had successful movies. They just have to make movies people actually like. That’s it. That’s the whole recipe for success. It’s proven. Hardly the impossible scenario you’re painting, nor are people being silly for believing it’s possible, as you’re implying.

I have no interest in Brave and the Bold at all. If Gunn wants to bank on it, more power to him. I may gain slight interest if it’s Batman and Robin meets Scooby Doo.

All that's been sold about Brave is that it'll feature multiple members of the Batfamily. I think a part of the goal for that is to be as far away removed from Reeves' interpretation as possible. They also don't seem to be in any rush to get there.

I'm indifferent about it, but some of these takes are mindnumbing lol

Why does Steve Weintraub feel so passive aggressive/bored in this interview.

In all the videos I've seen it feels like he's interrogating Reeves as if he's running for president. He keeps pushing for answers that Reeves is clearly not willing to answer fully. Pushing him on the filming start date was especially egregious.

That's just how he is. I've seen this dude in other interviews and he only has 1 mood.

Bill Ramey…. Is that you?

:shr:

Yeah, it’s going to be interesting to see how they do this DCU Batman vs Reeves’s Batman. I think it’s unnecessary drama that will split the fan base, but WB/DC sure do love to shoot themselves in the foot :wall: no surprised.

I couldn’t even imagine the pressure that Andy Muschietti would be under to make a Batman movie after The Batman Part II while Reeves is starting another spin off and writing Part III.

What is outdated about putting all the DC characters in their own universe? Last time I checked, the comics still do it. WB should have beat Marvel to the punch with a shared cinematic universe a long time ago.

And why can't we have both the Matt Reeves Batman films and The Brave And The Bold? Gunn and Reeves are clearly offering two different visions for Batman. Matt Reeves isn't going to give us a comic booky take on Batman, but James Gunn clearly wants to. Matt Reeves is focusing on a younger Long Halloween-ish timeline for Batman, while Gunn clearly wants Batman to be more established in his DCU. Both of those takes on Batman have their audience and artistic merit. So why can't we have both?

“I think I’m more looking forward, you know what I mean? It’s really about where we’re going and what I hope we can do that’s more - other shows that I hope that we can do - what we are planning to do in The Batman Part II.
We’re getting near the end of the script and we’ve shared big parts of the script with DC and with the studio. They are very, very excited and we’re hoping to gear up at the beginning of next year and hopefully be shooting sometime maybe mid-year or something like that - that’s the goal. So, we’re in a good place. We’re very excited about the story, so knock on wood.”
