I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

I didn't have a problem with how Arkham was depicted in the show. Arkham Asylum has never been a realistic depiction of what a real insane asylum is in the first place. This is still a fictional/comic book world and not the real world. The whole point in the episode is that this is a dehumanizing place, and everyone sent there is made ten times worse because they aren't there to be cured or helped. And realistic depictions of insane asylum inmates would either be too scary to be believable (in much the same way Steven Spielberg had to leave out some of the really evil things his nazi villain in Schindler's List did in real life because it would have come off too cartoonishly evil), or it would have been too bland. There is a reason artistic license is often taken in entertainment.

I suppose I understand the root of the concern. It's dangerous to paint mentally ill people with too broad of a brush that you've effectively demonized them as a collective group of people. The patients were definitely made to look and sound "scary."

But it's also worth considering that Arkham is a hospital for the violent, criminally insane. I don't know if Reeves' universe made it explicitly clear that the hospital is exclusive to those type of patients, but these are by and large dangerous people housed there. Add that to the point you raised (that the administration is not actually seeking to help these people), and you've got a recipe for a very bad environment where things are actively made worse and more dangerous.

There were some very interesting reveals in this episode that I was not expecting. I love how this saga is being constructed. The current head of Arkham could be a very interesting reveal if Matt wants to play with that idea.

I noticed that Selena’s mom wasn’t named as a victim of The Hangman. This has me curious as to what really happened. Falcone certainly has more blood on his hands. This is definitely why Catwoman could use her own series.

Also, who the hell is Dr. Rush actually? There’s something very sneaky about him.
I thought they pretty much said Dad was the Hangman, or at minimum a copycat.

What do you guys think of the DCU Wonder Woman being introduced in a video game.

About Arkham's inmates :

In a universe where things are still fictional, stylized and a bit over-the-top, I guess we can't really take what's depicted here as a representational thing...
Maybe I'm also less receptive to these questions since this is more of an American audience (and studios) preoccupation, and just to be clear, I'm not saying that as a criticism.
But I don't think there's any intention to be a bit real here, it's all about creating a nightmarish experience that Sofia has to live through to grow as a character.

That being said, living a couple of kilometers from the biggest psychiatric center for dangerous individuals in my country, and having seen its inside... as sad as it is, and as insensitive as it may sound, it's a living hell.

But I still get the concern.

While we're on the subject of the Hangman, here's a related repost from the Episode 4 thread:

Gleeson and the cops were apparently only targeting recent hangings, Sofia being a credible perpetrator, while Falcone has probably been killing people all his life and, I guess, without bothering much about staging (Selina's mother?). My point is that making up his wife's murder as a suicide may have been a way of protecting his children, and isn't necessarily a signature…

I still think the series is misleading us and that Alberto has picked up some of his father's bad habits to become the Hangman.

It just makes too much sense to me. There's something a bit off/too evident for it to be Carmine, and it also feels like we don't know everything about Alberto...
Again, it's a superficial point, but Alberto is originally secretly a killer, so I suppose the series could use that at some point.

While I thought this hypothetical "betrayal from a beloved brother" would be the element that would drive Sofia to murderous madness (it's obviously already done now 😅), I suppose this revelation could yet be the ace up Oz's sleeve…
From a dramatic point of view, it's still a great card to play in my opinion... and we're only in the middle of the show... :D

deeply unserious arkham discourse up top. i liked the portrayal tho i hope when Matt gets his hands on arkham, it's more showy and outlandish

I think it’s a good call. Flash, Aquaman, and WW are the characters I don’t think are gonna get movies/series anytime soon since we had pretty recent (unsuccessful) DCU entries, and the superhero market is becoming more fatigued and less profitable and all, so going for rebooted solo films with recasts of these guys so soon is a gamble, and so, games and animation are a different way go about it. Gunn mentioned video games’ connectivity during the DcU reveal right? I don’t think he says that unless there was already something in the oven.

Though I don’t think it means we can’t see these guys appear in live action soon, be it in Waller, Authority, Lanterns etc, but not headlining their own solo film franchises.

If the JL movie hits like 1.5 billion, then maybe high budget solo films like GL and Flash would be back on the table.

A really good Wonder Woman video game would certainly peak interest in a project featuring her. Can you imagine an early God of War type of video game featuring the Amazon princess. Then the actress who voices her shows up in live action a few years later. That would certainly be a new take on the Superhero dynamic.

It's a good idea if the game focuses on the characters origin and/or early years because we probably won't see that story on the big screen anytime soon. In particular, that first wonder woman movie was really good so no need to retread that ground on the big screen or tv. I think anything related to wonder woman is at a minimum 3 years out. If the lanterns tv is rumoured to be premiering end of 2026, the paradise lost tv show is likely going to be after that in 2027.

It would be interesting to see if that wonder woman game is being repurposed for the DCU. The problem with the video games side is that these things take like 4 to 5 years to produce and reviews are based on a lot of factors like gameplay mechanics and story so if they get bad reviews, you potentially hurt the brand. You could have a great story and terrible gameplay, but all people will see is a negative score and associate it with the character.

Cool to see some film influence showing up on the publishing side.

Apparently Denis Villeneuve has suggested dune part 3 will begin production in 2026 which opens up greg fraiser’s schedule to work on the batman part 2 hopefully? I hope he returns
This is great news (unless you are a big dune fan) and is also probably related to Zendaya having to appear in the spiderman sequel which likely pushed the production of Dune.

I'm positive this now frees up fraiser to shoot batman in 2025.

Hush sequel with Loeb back announced at NYCC. coincidence? or is he in the film and DC is trying to get ahead of the curve and capitalize.
I really genuinely think it’s the former (if this comic is just about to hit, it’s probably been in the works for some time), but I guess we’ll see.
