I never realized how much I miss the Gotham PD blimps. I love the anachronisms in BTAS.
Yeah, my mental image of Gotham-City was shaped by Burton's movies and
BTAS, so I also tend to prefer it being portrayed, visually speaking, as a fantasy place rather than a copy of our modern big cities.
That's one of the things I find very compelling about
The Batman. Despite the discussions about the supposed realism of that take, its Gotham feels to me like an eternally moody place, caught between different eras, with some old architecture, sometimes Gothic or industrial, modern technology here, and gangsters in pinstripe suits there, etc. There's a larger-than-life/otherworldly quality to it.
I remember that interview from a couple years ago where Gunn said he wanted to approach the DC universe as a set of well-defined places, each with their own unique characteristics. I like that, and after seeing how he approached certain places in his
Superman, I'm hopeful that we'll see yet another stylized Gotham.
The blimps are coming...
