I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

With change comes opportunity. Reeves will get someone great. Someone was always not gonna be able to come back after the massive delay.

Annoying that people are so goddamn angry at Greig for taking a lucrative job he was probably passionate about. I’ll likely never watch those movies but it’s a little embarrassing watching people act like it’s a profound betrayal of artistic integrity to make Beatles biopics and not… the ninety eighth Batman movie!

From everybody's favorite... Sneider on his X account:

THIS JUST IN via THE HOT MIC: At last week's CAUGHT STEALING junket, journalists were asked by publicists not to ask Zoe Kravitz any questions about THE BATMAN PART II because "she's not in it and doesn't know anything," per a source. No word on whether that's true, as we all know publicists lie, but that's the word on the street. Just saying! Don't shoot the messenger...

Publicists also do this to not detract from the ACTUAL film being promoted.

I literally need a high action heist series with these two badass ladies. Start with Selina busting Sofia out, they flee to Italy, then unknowingly steal from Black Mask and things turn really violent.

Come on! This series has all the potential to be absolute pressure. I just love the concept of their dynamic and the energy that these two actresses could bring to the screen.

Yep, there's something to do here.

But am I the only one who feels like the letter at the end of Penguin was more of a nod to the family connection between Sofia and Selina than a real setup for the future?

I definitely don’t think it was a real setup, but an ambitious toss up. It’s an opportunity to do something completely fresh and unique with these characters. Also, to expand the universe a bit further.

We’ve seen a different side of Gotham with Penguin. So, I believe that a story with Selina and Sofia has the best opportunity to naturally provide a little change of scenery at the moment.

feel like some of you undervalue Fraser's contribution to this universe lol. same with James Chinlund (who is most likely not coming back)

Not at all. Everyone thinks he did great, but it’s not like Reeves is gonna hire some hack.

It’ll look different, but it’s a different movie and it’ll still be of a piece. Greig returning would have been awesome but I think it’s exciting that it’ll have an extra distinct identity.

Being okay with or excited for change isn’t denigrating his work on The Batman.

If Fraser is unavailable, should just get Darius Khondji, he shot Se7en for Fincher, which obviously had a lot of influence on Part I's look, and is still shooting beautiful stuff like Mickey-17. Khondji, I feel like could do something in the general aesthetic style as Part I, but take it somewhere new and different while still feeling like a part of the same family.

Alternatively, Jeff Cronenweth seems to be active again after a decade of taking it easy (probably due to burn out from putting up with Fincher so long). Not sure how Tron: Area is looking though, haven't paid attention to it.

I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this movie. Fraser was so immensely important to The Batman. It's a huge loss

Stop downplaying this
I'm not gonna have a bad feeling about a movie because of a new DP, regardless of how great of a job Greig Fraser did on the first one. It's still a Matt Reeves movie.

Stop overreacting to this

It's too bad if he can't come back, but let's not pretend they can't get another talented DP. Matt Reeves is still directing and I recall him saying he planned out a lot of his shots and framing ahead of the actual shoot. Fraser's work with the volume technology is what will be missed especially with what happened with the Covid lock downs.

That said, maybe this time around they can actually do more location shoots. I just can't wait until we start getting some official confirmations. Hopefully in September we start actually getting some info.

Just give the gig to Jarin Blaschke.
Much as I love how Eggers' movies look for the most part, they also get INCREDIBLY murky and washed out to the point where I can't watch for too long sometimes.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt if he was hired but Batman needs Color, even if it's somewhat sparse.

I confess that I mainly mentioned his name because I loved what he did on Nosferatu, which reminded me so much of Batman Returns... But I definitely agree that color is needed!

My big hope is the sequel doesn’t have any of that Covid lockdown induced look. Being forced to totally change how they were going to shoot the movie during the pandemic gives that movie a lot of its tight, claustrophobic atmosphere. Which was awesome but it’d be super cool to open it up. Like a probably less extreme Begins to TDK shift.

The first movie was shot like a long nightmare from a sleepless ocd man's pov.
I think the next movie could be different, as long as the path of Bruce is taking him in other places.

On the other hand, it's a "Part II", so I think the trilogy is set to seem something like one movie, not hugely different (I surely don't want a BB to TDK shift).
(On the other-other hand, it didn't prevent Coppola, for example, to shot in very different way Tahoe's Lake or Cuba or New York in different ways in The Godfather II.)

But I think we all need to remember one thing.
We all know this only now, but Reeves surely knows it from months, it's not like "oh no, production begins in six months, I have to find another DOP!". He has surely found a solution. His draft has already notes on shots and something like that, as far as we know.

Reeves is a 20+-year-filmmaker and he is in this project from almost ten years, he has a very personal vision of it.
RELAX.
