I just dont want to see a pity nomination if the performance wouldnt have been nominated if heath was alive (which i dont think it would have) dont give out a nom just because he died it steps on other hardworking actors who could have got a place and im sure its something heath himself wouldnt have wanted.

Well if Heath did get nominated; there really is no way to prove it was out of pity or cause he deserved it. If he really does deserve it then people who didn't like it will say it was because the academy pitied him. Where as if he doesn't get it people who felt he deserved it will say cause the academy doesn't want to seem bias because of his death.
It is a double edge sword and there is no way of avoiding either of those two scenarios.

if he deserves it, he may get the nod. if he doesn't, he won't. it's as simple at that.

agreed! but just because he deserves it doesn't mean he will get nominated, unfortunatly.
right. it all depends. if he has a great performance, but there are many other great performances this year, he still may not get nominated. And at the same time, if his performance is one of the top performances this year, he still may not get nominated due to the comic book genre stigma.

But I have no doubt that the academy will not base their opinion on the fact that he is dead.

We shouldn't be having this conversation, he should have got one for Brokeback Mountain, or best supporting actor in Monster's Ball. Those wankers in the Academy wouldn't know talent if it gave them a business card.

He was amazing in Brokeback, He should have won! I can't say that it shouldn't have gone to Philip Seymore Hoffman, though. I didn't even bother seeing that movie, the previews were annoying, so sitting there for two hours listening to him talk like that would have drove me bonkers.

Winner:

* Capote (2005) - Philip Seymour Hoffman

Other Nominees:
# Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Heath Ledger
# Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) - David Strathairn
# Hustle & Flow (2005) - Terrence Howard
# Walk the Line (2005) - Joaquin Phoenix

I don't know Philip Seymore Hoffman did a fantastic job in Capote

hoffman DID do a fantastic job in capote. and he had been overlooked by the academy for years. he probably deserved it that year. and as far as the academy knew, ledger would have many more oscar-worthy roles ahead of him.

look at dicaprio. he's yet to win an oscar. so to say ledger SHOULD have one for brokeback is a matter of opinion. he COULD have won. he was good enough. but no one could say hoffman didn't deserve it.

and perhaps ledger will deserve it for the joker as well.

Ya, with how long Hoffman has been kind of neglected by the Academy they kind of felt well Ledger is young I am sure he will come back again. They didn't feel like it was prudent.

Dicaprio is another fantastic actor who hasn't found the perfect role for him.

dicaprio has had 3 nominations. he has had plenty of great roles, but that one hasn't come for him yet. he'll get there.

heath would have gotten there. that's why i hope this joker role is as good as they are saying. i want him to earn an oscar for this. i don't want them to hand him one. and i don't think they will. if he gets the nomination, it will be because he deserved it, and not because he died. but it remains to be seen if it is an oscar-worthy role.

will it be an intense, show-stealing, powerhouse performance? i have no doubt. but that doesn't necessarily mean it's an "oscar role."

nah Di Caprio is good but hasn't stood out yet. He doesn't have a movie that makes me think ohhh I want to see him in that..

no wait I lied The Aviator

i thought he was great in the departed. there were some subtleties in his performance that could easily be overlooked. i think it was a damn good one

it was fantastic; but he is not being a character like antoine chugar; bill the butcher or even Joker who creates such a lasting impression on someone oh well thats what I like in an actor as well

I'm gonna say he's gonna get nominated out of pity, just a feeling I have, because of the over-the-top mourning. He's a good actor, but nothing I have seen of him says he's great. We'll see when the movie comes out, and we see other performances this year.

And you sure as hell won't be able to tell by the people on this board, they thought Bale should have been nominated or/and won an Oscar for BB. I nearly fainted when these words was said.

right, a lot of times those "wild" characters are more memorable. and that's when the word
"iconic" and "legendary" comes to mind. but those roles are rare. dicaprio will have continiously solid performances. but i don't know if he'll every play a "classic character." he has many many years ahead of him so we'll see. but i know what you mean.

bale was great as batman. it was hardly an oscar worthy performance. but he was easily the best batman/bruce wayne of all time. by far.

But not a great performance, and far from deserving to win or even be nominated for the role.
