Interviewee has been PMed. Gallagher, your time shall come. This is just something I gotta do asap while it's still fresh.
Never said I wanted an Interview, just wanted to know what picture I'd get to represent my presence
It's a dong isn't it?
trustyside-kick: With me today, is of course Johnny Blaze. Sometimes you may here him called JBizzle and sometimes you may hear that he once set a man abalze...only one of these stories may or may not be true. Johnny is one of the masterminds behind the very first RPG that was created way back when we expanded our RPG community back in the summer of 2007. Welcome aboard, JB.
Johnny Blaze: Good to be here, Trusty. *takes sip of drink*.
trusty: We have a very strict "dry" community in this office, JB.
JB: *downs the rest of the tasty beverage*
Better?
trusty: That'll do.
JB: It better. You just made me swallow down piss warm Jamison.
trusty: Let's try to focus this interview on G&M's Revival as much as possible so that they do not realize that it's all a hoax and I'm really only interviewing you cause I've been dying to. I'll buy you a couple rounds later.
...crap.
JB: Yay! Free booze!
trusty: Alright alright. For months...and I mean MONTHS...the slight mention of G&M would stir something inside of you, am I right JB?
JB: Yes, indeed. Mostly anger with a bit of sadness thrown in. SuperFerret and I spent over a month working on the game, setting up the guidelines, the world, everything. To see it die the way it did...Well, let's just say it didn't sit well given how much time we devoted to it.
trusty: Especially seeing how it was the first to come out of the group. I've always admired the amount of thought and work you guys put into that RPG. To me, it set the guideline for others to follow.
JB: Thank you kindly. We did do our damndest to make G&M the best RPG it can possibly be. And it's going good in it's second coming, though it still has a long ways to go.
trusty: I feel so wierd saying this since I'm one of the AGMs...but this time around, nothing has truly changed about the RPG. How is it you plan to keep this RPG live and strong? You're doing a great job by moving the RPG forward with your villain Charaun and his campaign. Do you expect this to last the entire Season? Or just long enough to fit more diabolic schemes to thrill the players with PC-interaction?
JB: Well, to start off with keeping this RPG live and strong...it's no secret that I think the lack of PC interaction is a major factor in the game's death the first go-around. Everyone was stuck in solo-arc hell it seemed, and it was incredibly slow moving to get people together. Now, with it opening right into a mutli-PC mega-arc, the game's definitely got the shot in the arm it needed.
As for how long the war will last...I'd like to have it last practically the whole season. Make it an actual war. An massive, epic campaign that will, eventually, draw in all of Europe and maybe even Western Asia. Sort of like a G&M version of a World War, if you will. But, that's only if it remains fresh. If the arc seems to start getting stale, then there's no sense to keep it going and we can move right into the endgame. So there is some flexibility there.
trusty: There have been some new RPGs that are heavily coordinated by the GameMaster(s) involved. Do you think this same format to G&M would or should eventually be adapted should the RPG start to fall?
JB: I don't know. That's touchy for me. I've played D&D for over half my life, so I'm used to games being run by G.O.D. (Games Operational Director). But, the thing that I love about the majority of Hype RPGs is that they're player driven. I love that freedom and the fact that an arc can turn in unexpected ways just given a certain PCs reaction to a situation. In a GM run game, that's less likely to happen.
trusty: To my surprise, G&M is not over-run with elf characters. I'm not a huge gamer but I know how elves seem to be popular and I know that you have a distaste towards elves. The majority of characters seem to be human to my surprise. Are you hoping for more diversity amongst the races?
JB: I'd love me some diversity.
trusty: I was curious and asked because you mentioned the scale you'd want this World War to be.
JB: Currently we have an orc, two drow (dark elves), some undead, and a halfling. I'd love to have a dwarf or two. Hell, if I wasn't so invested in my current characters, I'd love to play a Dwarven Battlerager. Nothing like killing an enemy by giving him a hug with your spiked armor on. I know that we are primarily centralized in Europe, but I'd love to see some Asian characters pop up. Though with the majority of PCs in Europe, it would be hard for them to do any interacting.
trusty: When someone who is familiar with the kind of RPGs present in the SHH looks at G&M at first glance, what are you hoping they will see that separates the game from the others?
JB: The amount of care and thought we put into creating our world. Nothing against the other games, but Ferret and I spent countless hours going over stuff on MSN, brain-storming ideas, writing and tweaking everything about the world, etc. I'd put G&M up against any RPG when it comes to that. And, hopefully, interested posters would see that care and sign on up.
trusty: The world of G&M is heavily inspired around the world of Dungeons & Dungeons, but you guys do not discourage those who try to add their own spin, right?
JB: Of course not. We took a lot of themes from D&D, what with it being the most universally known fantasy game. But players don't have to be D&Ders to get into G&M. A lot of the monsters are D&D based, but there's info provided for them in the Bestiary. Other than that, it's open for the players to go their own route. Provided it doesn't contradict what another PC has already established.
trusty: To share with the readers, what were your first set of thoughts of when I messaged you about a possibe G&M Revival after I believe it was Optikal who asked about a fantasy RPG?
JB: Eh, I didn't know what to think to be honest. Part of me was glad to see all the interest it was getting. The other part was a bit bitter in a more, "Where the **** were you *******s before!?" kind of way. But I'm glad that the game has garnered a ****load more interest than it's previous run. Again I think opening with the multi-PC arc helped that immensely.
trusty: So let it be known for all new posters. Wanna take part in hunting down an Undead Lich-King? Join G&M today!
JB:
Or join the winning team and help rid the world of the goody-goodies.
trusty: Yes. Villains are always needed to.
JB: Indeed. A hero is only measured by their rogue's gallery.
trusty: Alright well, one thing I've known since being on these boards is that you don't seem to be very "emotional" in the sense that when you give your 2 cents, you just put it out there. Be honest with us...did you have any literal reactions when G&M's Revival took off? A jump in the air? Have a round of drinks to celebrate? A few tears?
JB: I was happy and excited. That's about it. I did have some drinks, but that's normal routine and had nothing to do with G&M.
trusty: There goes my 5 bucks to byrd...
JB: Hahahahahahaha. Foolish, Trusty. You should've known better than to make bets with Byrd.
trusty: I've got a soft spot for him.
JB: You poor, misguided man.
trusty: If there was one thing you could shout out to all the non-members of G&M who won't be seen "cool" in our eyes until they join G&M, what would it be? Think of this like your commercial ad.
JB: Eh, really I don't want to attract people who are only half-interested in the game. If they love Sword and Sorcery adventure, a massive world to run around in (including other planes of existense), a ****load of different character options, and endless story possibilities...then by all means join.
If they're only going to be half-assing it, then they can **** off.
trusty: Straight to the point. I like it. You're a fine man, JB.
JB: So I'm not told nearly enough.
trusty: And with that, this interview is conclude. Thanks a bunch for your time and it was a blast. Hope it was good for you too.
JB: It was amazing *lights up a cig*
trusty: See ya around, JB.
JB: Take 'er easy homie.![]()
Groovy.
Still not joing G&M. I love the concept but I'm a ****** and can't get my head around a lot of the more complicated stuff (Like reading.)
It's funny, but through the entire interview I was picturing Trusty as Aquaman.![]()

That's ok. So does trusty.
A good couple of reads (I've just read the last two) and a mention for yours truly!
*dashes off to write an Akanna post*
trustyside-kick: With us tonight is one of the few overseas RPers that Keyser reeled into our RPG's and may I say that I'm glad this dude decided to stick around. Sadly, not all of Keyser's referred people have remained with us. So how'd you feel when I messaged you a few days ago about the idea of doing this with you?
Optikal: Well, first of all I was like "wow" and then immediately wondered why there was no-one more qualified available for interview. But seriously, I was -and am- absolutely honoured. Getting into The Posters Studio is a sure sign you made it in the RPGs.
trusty: Well while I don't pick favorites, I was looking forward to getting around to finally interviewing you. I cannot even count the amount of times our heads have clashed on the discussion: DC or Marvel? Course I always end up winning because let's face it, DC rocks.
Op: I KNEW this would come up! And you know I'm a Marvel through and through. Aside from a select few characters, I just could never get into anything DC, none of their characters or stories ever drew me in in the same way the Marvel universe does. DC is just a bunch of rubbish named dudes with convoluted origins and usually rubbish designs. Marvel is where its at!
trusty: I have the power to destroy you--in this interview--so do not tempt me.
Op: yeah, but as a DC your powers probably won't work on wood... or yellow... or something equally rediculous!
It's not all bad though, I love Green Lantern and the Corps. I like the Batman and the Gotham universe for the most part. Keyser bought me a 3 issue mini based on the Rogues that I liked and I enjoyed Salvation Run. Oh, and not to forget I recently loved Final Crisis Aftermath: INK. But other than those few instances, I've always struggled to find any sort of lasting emotion for anything DC.
trusty: I think...uh, you're forgetting another DC character that you know and love.
Op: Oh yeah, Hawkman is pretty cool in the right stories. But if you're trying to get me to acknowledge that fish dude.... well it's probably best we don't go down that road unless this interview can get an 'R' rating :~P
trusty: You've stung me, Op. Truly stung me. You know...I don't think I want to do this interview anymore.
Op: Awwww.... come on now, you know I love you and your unhealthy fetish with that guy. Will you forgive me if I admit that I secretly enjoy Tempest?
trusty:
Moving on...
Op: :~D
trusty: Alright alright. So tell me, Op. What were Keyser's "exact words" (the best you can remember) that got you to join the SHH! RPGs?
Op: It was actually me that shown the interest. Me and Keyser have been close since around 2004 where we were in a wrestling roleplay (called an E-Fed) together. He mentioned a couple of times that he had posts to write for an RPG where he played The Joker. Well I've always been a comic book geek and that piqued my interest. Keyser asked me to proof read his posts a couple of times and well let's be honest, we all know how influential Keysers 'Joker' has been around here. Reading those posts made me want to try my hand at it. I enquired and learned the basics from Keyser and before you know it I was signed up to the Hype and began my tenure in One Universe as the Rhino!
trusty: Beautiful story, Op. Truly magical.
Op: Indeed. Finding a basement full of enthusiastic geeks who like to write up stories as their favorite spandex clad super heroes (and Aquaman) was like finding... home. It was truly a beautiful time full of wonder and discovery.
trusty: Do you recall the time you typed up your first post for the hype? How did it feel not writing about big, sweaty men, bear-hugging each other in a ring? Do you look back at your first post and wonder "who the hell wrote that?" or do you remain proud?
Op: It's a little bit of both to be honest. A lot of my Efedding days were spent exploring the person behind the 'wrestling' character. So it was not too unlike what we do here with the personas behind the masks and the superpowers. In a sense though, it felt liberating to be tackling something completely new and a subject I've loved all my life. Of course, that first post is a bit choppy and rough around the edges, but I think it was a solid enough start and I wanted it to be something of a statement of intent. Proof that I could hang with the vast array of talented writers that the Hype RPG Games offered up. And from the positivity surrounding my early posts here, I think I achieved what I set out to do.
trusty: Look back at the lot of characters you have picked up...any of them stick out and hold a very special place in your heart?
Op: Yeah. I have cycled through quite a few brief playthroughs lol! But two stick out above others and that's Apocalypse and the Punisher in Marvels Heroes vs Villains game. Apocalypse has always been one of my favorite bad guys and never seems to get the same love as other X-Men rogues. Here is an ancient, mightily powerful and technologically advanced villain who has lived for thousands of years.
He's not only intelligent and cunning, but he's also this huge physical prescence with a wide array of powers. The guy should be like a force of nature, but he always gets the short end of the stick. In my run with him this season I tried to bring him a bit of credability. I'm extremely proud of my first few Apocalypse posts and the set up for his return, as well as his epic battle with Thor and Loki. Working with both Bkhedr and Keyser at the same time with a character so close to my heart was just phenomenal. It was for opportunities like that that inspired me to keep playing these games through a very rough personal year.
AS for Frank, well he's my all-time #1 favorite character. Punisher is often thought to be 'cursed' alongside the likes of the Hulk in that very few writers can ever get past a few posts in trying to integrate them into the various game worlds. Punisher has been more of a slow boil throughout the season with brief periods of posting, but I'm extremely fond of him and intend to keep him there, in the background, ever-present in the universe.
trusty: Any you regret not currently playing at this very moment?
Op: Well I'm MASSIVELY fond of War Machine and recently dropped him in 1U after an irgins arc with Keysers Iron Man. I'm about to pick him back up and you can expect big things popping for Rhodey and the War Machine crew in the coming months. I'm also a huge fan of Ares, but no matter how hard I try to play him, I can never find a meaningful story for him. Oh, and keep an eye out for a possible return of a certain Red Lantern in World of Heroes, and a whole new character offering a new dynamic to the next season of Heroes vs Villains!
trusty: Is there any character that you have yet to pick up but are dying to? This can be a character that is already taken or a character that you simply don't have any ideas for but would love to play.
Op: I'd honestly love to have a go with Batman, but honestly, I don't think I could do him justice. Moon Knight is similar to Batman in a lot of ways and I'd like to try him too. I've also often had urges to try with Green Arrow and Daredevil too, but again, don't have ideas in place to do the characters justice.
trusty: Through your RPG career, who would you say you've had the most fun working with?
Op: First and foremost it has to be Keyser. For years we've roleplayed together and we just have this brilliant connection where we can just bounce off of each other. I enjoyed the personal and very raw War Machine origin arc we did with Rhodey and Stark in 1U recently as well as our tongue-in-cheek escapades with Loki and Ares in Heroes vs Villains. I've also had huge fun working with Electro UK and Gallagher in the past. Both are brilliant writers and all round fun dudes to work with.
trusty: Ah, so you're pretty familiar with the overseas waters it seems. Anyone you've yet to work with but would bounce off ideas to at the chance of working together?
Op: I'd love to work with Master Bruce / Batman one day, I'm also a huge fan of Andy C, Spike and Superferret as well as you Trusty. To be honest, I'm one of those guys whose happy to work with anyone and everyone. I think each person in the RPGs both new and old has something unique to offer and I love opening up new ideas and possibilities with people. Since I first started here on the Hype, it was always a goal of mine to have a roster spot on some of the games teams, and finally managed to get on a couple a few months back. However, with the recent slowdown of activity on the boards, it felt like an encumberment to the characters I had at the time. That kinda pu me off of playing on the various team rosters. BUT, when it comes to working with indiviuals (or even a few at the same time) I'm always up for new ideas and suggestions. Anything to spark life and freshness into the games can only be a good thing IMO.
trusty: Big events come and go in the RPGs. Sometimes they work, and few times they haven't. Often times they are inspired by that time's current or recent comic-timeline. If you had complete reign over any of the RPG's, which comic-event storyline would you have the most fun molding and translating into our RPG-realm? This arc doesn't have to be recent and can be from ages ago.
Op: Well first of all, the World of Heroes 'War of Light' arc is really really interesting. It's something I've briefly participated in and one I've followed ever since and really is a highlight of the current games. As for which stories I'd love to see a spin on? Well I'd love to see a Messiah Complex arc with our mutant contingent over in Marvel. I reckon that'd be rather interesting. As for DC, I'm a massive fan of War Games (and Black Mask) and would love to see some of our crew get down and dirty with a take on that story.
trusty: Being a massive fan of the villain would you take the arc by the horns and play the vile Black Mask yourself?
Op: I HAVE briefly played as Black Mask and really enjoyed him, and with the new year around the corner and my personal life finally settling back to a gentle simmer, who knows what'll happen. Never say never I say.
I'm also a huge fan of Marvels War of Kings story...![]()
trusty: So what's stopping you from currently playing Black Mask over at DC? Off the top of my head I cannot recall his current status--dead or alive--but there are some people who would know for sure. And even if he's dead?...these are comics we are talking about.
Op: It was 1U where I played him, working from the ground-up to build a new empire. However, it'd be easy enough to move that over to the DC game. The main thing stopping me right now is the same reason my activity has faded these past months. 2009 has been a rough year. The breakdown of my marriage, my heart attack, being homeless and out of work. It's only these past weeks that I've got a new job, got the all-clear from my doctors and am finally settling back into something resembling normality. And as we all know, life affects the RPGs. However, a new year and a fresh start is right around the corner and I can assure you, my activity and dedication to these great games will be back with a vengeance. I've got plots and characters in the works already and am even masterminding some future tales with other members. All in all 2010 should be a great year for both me personally and me as a roleplayer.
trusty: Being aware of how rough the past year has been for you, I'm glad to hear that things are working out now. Is there anything you'd like to shout out to our fellow RPers just before we conclude this interview?
Op: Yah, do do drugs and like Mr T says: Treat your mother right! Be cool, homies.
trusty: Oh and...just one last thing before we actually bring this to a close, Op. You see, I've got you an early Christmas present I guess you could say. Something I just know you'd appreciate.
Op: Oh?
trusty: Oh indeed, Op. Oh indeed. It's a few years old, but I'm sure you might be able to still use it or at least trade it in for the new deal they would have. Merry Early-Christmas, Op.

Op: Don't you just love how offering 10 issues for a dollar isn't enough? they STILL have to use Batman as a sweetener! Thanks Trusty, It'll be a handy bookmark for keeping page in all of my totally awesome Namor comics.
trusty: Yea yea yea. The never-ending battle between us dealing with DC and Marvel goes on. I'm trustyside-kick, and that's a wrap. See ya around, Op.
Op: It's been an honour and a privelege! Thanks Trusty. Love you.
God, I really fudged that last line there! LOL.
