Interstellar - Part 7

I don't think they treated his past movies kindly though, especially Inception, I'm so surprised
This may be Nolan's most aesthetically pleasing movie. People were growing tired of Pfister's sensibilities (I'm a fan).

Van Hoytema will definitely be adding a different dimension to Nolan's pictures moving forward -- if they keep working together.

It's exciting to see that this film may be more divisive than Nolan's previous movies. I'm hoping to see Nolan, after a stream of successful commercial works, honing in on something that wholly represents his filmmaking "voice" - which may be the reason the film is dividing critics. Similar to how Paul Thomas Anderson transitioned from films like Boogie Nights to The Master, Nolan may be exploring different filmmaking styles, perhaps something that isn't heavily reigned down by the commercial needs of, say, a comic book franchise. The tricky part is that Nolan is exploring these things with a massive budget and in turn, general audiences may not be open to Nolan's new, potentially more abstract, direction (then again, Inception was fairly abstract and audiences ate it up). I see a maturing filmmaker, utilizing a big budget, exploring his own interests, but those interests may not align with those of general audiences.

= some negative reviews.

Not even close. I'm more like one of those I'll see it and make up my own damn mind kind of people.

Gone Girl was the best movie I've seen this year so far, a perfect social satire, and no movies from my top 10 last year even broke your magical 94% mark. But by all means keep relying on bloggers' opinions it'll get you far in life.

Um...then why are you here on SHH talking about films?

I think only TDK and Avengers (at least at one point) have gotten more than 94% on RT in terms of CBMs.

If your time is as precious as you say, you shouldn't have time to lose by posting about lesser entertainment. :o

:lmao:

I take it you're one of these "If I don't understand it, it means it's a masterpiece" kind of guys.

I swear, I have never seen a movie in my life with less than 94.1% on RT, and I'm glad I didn't. I don't have time to lose with lesser entertainment.

You've never seen Star Wars A New Hope, Star Wars Return of the Jedi, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Gladiator, The Shining, Ben Hur, T2, any of the Marvel movies, The Assassination of Jesse James, Inception, The Prestige, Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring, Back to the Future Part 2 or 3, Die Hard, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom or Last Crusade, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Fight Club, Se7en...?

Did you not watch movies before Rotten Tomatoes existed? When you were a child did you routinely say "I'm sorry, Mother, but I can not watch that movie, because an online review aggregator has not been invented yet and I can't possibly watch a movie and form my own opinion. That would be madness, woman!"?

You guys seriously can't tell when someone is joking? The bigger the joke, the harder it is to spot?

I couldn't care less about online (or offline) reviews.

So I've decided to buy a large popcorn but maybe just a small cool drink. I'll need to drink something in that time, also due to the saltiness of the popcorn, but not too much in the danger of a bathroom break. Which I definitely WON'T be doing regardless. But if there's a lenticular cup, I'll be all over that. :woot:

I probably could have told you were joking if this wasn't the Hype. I've read so many absurd posts from people who weren't joking that my jokeometer is busted.

I go on a bit of a fast before a film. Inbetween the time I wake up and the time I watch the film I only drink one cup of coffee and just enough water to keep my mouth from drying out, and I only eat a small meal. I don't buy any food or drink at the theater. Partly because Carmike concessions cost you your first born child. Occasionally Ill carry a bottled water in with me.

Marvolo you have the worst joke detector on the hype my friend.

I will go to the bathroom before the movie. And then I'm done with it. There is no way I'm missing anything.

you get one point for your use of james van der gif.

A hard science fiction picture that doesn't have to follow any tropes of genre, with a visual master at the helm and at least an attempt to be conservative with it's speculation (in comparison to a lot of "sci fi") along with some possible big ideas about the state of humanity and it's future all tied together by the small scale connections of character drama with an all star cast? Yeah, I don't care what reviews say... I'll be buying a ticket to my digital theater to see this for sure.

Amen.

Somethimes the critics and audience disagree, the latter is much more important to a director/studio, we'll see what happens.

You can bet that even if it's good but disappoints the fingers will all be pointed at WB.

It's a Paramount and WB film so I don't know why all fingers would be pointed at WB.

Also it's far too early for you or anyone to be calling this a critical disappointment.

What bothers me about the "reviews don't matter" mantra is that that thinking never seems to cover all films. Reviews do kinda matter, maybe that sucks and maybe it doesn't but they kinda do, especially on Superhero Hype.

I use reviews to attack films at times and many others use reviews to attack films. I'm not excluding myself when I say that most on Hype don't follow through on that "reviews don't matter" mantra.

If someone tailors their viewing habits according to critical consensus, then the aggregate RT score can certainly be valuable. But imo, it’s only a rough guide - not a precision instrument. Thus, something in the ~+70% range is a generally good sign. (I wouldn’t say, however, that you can put much stock in the difference between 80% and 90%.) Meanwhile, 40% or lower is fair reason to be skeptical of a movie. And an even split (~50%, which is designated as “rotten” on RT) is almost useless. Here, you pretty much ignore the score altogether and consult the individual critics who best match your tastes.

All that said, if a person enjoys one-upmanship (“na, na, na; my movie scored higher on RT than your movie”) then this person is somewhat obligated to “own” the bad as much as the good. IOW, s/he can’t boast of a high RT score in one case and then dismiss the RT system as flawed in another. :word:

Sorry if posted already but Empire is a 5/5 rave!

http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=138121

Slight Spoilers in the review, here's the concensus:

Brainy, barmy and beautiful to behold, this is Stephen Hawking’s Star Trek: a mind-bending opera of space and time with a soul wrapped up in all the science.

:applaud

This is so polarizing every critic either adores it or hates it. I can't wait even more now.

EDIT: Another really positive one:

Yeah Empire have given the last 4 Nolan movies 5/5.

Faraci though is a really weird one. I almost guarantee he gave a twitter reaction after he saw it which said he loved it which seems to be gone and he also wrote that he changed his mind since writing the review. So he liked it then didnt like it? I havent read his review.

Dat Empire rave. :woot:

As for Faraci, I'm sure there was no agenda. If he just wanted to antagonize, he could've submitted his mixed as a rotten but he went fresh. I believe that he loved a lot about the film but had some serious issues with it and that's fine.

My thing on Faraci is, like I was saying earlier about film criticism- I think he's incredibly hit and miss. Sometimes he'll write something so insightful and on the money that I can't help but tip my hat to him. Other times he comes across as so arrogant, wrong-headed and dense that I want to reach out and smack my computer monitor across the face. So yeah, he's always a wild card for me.

I'm sure FILM CRITIC HULK is going to have pretty epic essay about the film and the reception and Nolan in general.

I think the reaction also shows that the main issue with Nolan "fanboys" was Batman. Could you imagine if it was TDKR with this early reaction? People would lose their ****. Actually IIRC some were.
