Interstellar - Part 8

That's actually my biggest gripe about this movie, which is something I feel Nolan really needs to work on big time. Inception and TDKR were notorious for this, but this one was even worse. Does he have his own sound engineer, or does he do all of levels himself? Either way, he really needs to learn to balance the score, and put it more in the background at times, especially when characters are talking.

Not sure if you guys are referring to IMAX or standard, but I will say I didnt have this issue with IMAX personally.

The only dialogue i had trouble deciphering was after [BLACKOUT]TARS' "WHY ARE YOU WHISPERING?" joke[/BLACKOUT]

I always figured it was just my ears or the theater or my tv. Yeah I noticed it in TDK and in this

Yeah, I didn't have any issues with the score and had no trouble hearing the dialogue.

Ironically, the only Nolan film where I had trouble hearing people talk was TDK, and that's the one everyone loves the most AND the one that got an Oscar nom for sound-editing.

I love that about his movies, that blaring score, so powerful & overwhelming.

Yeah it was expected to be something like 200~ ish. But somehow Nolan always finishes his films below the budget

Paramount and WB pony up 200 million. Told them he didn't need that much. Budget was at 165 million and he still came in 10 million under. Ridiculous, this man is.

I don't buy for a second that the budget was as low as they reported. It looks like a movie that would cost well over $200m. Incredible visuals and scale.

This movie is what 2012s Prometheus should have been, a transcending epic of space, love and discovery and a alot of wonder.
I see Interstellar tomorrow, as for Prometheus,
It was a prequel to a trilogy about monsters that latched onto your face and burst out of your chest.
Discovery maybe, but I don't think Prometheus was ever going to have love as a major underlying theme .

whoa...thats actually a great way to put it.

For anyone who has seen "Interstellar" in a IMAX Digital theater, does the scenes that were shot in IMAX look about as incredible as the IMAX scenes in "Transformers: AOE" or better?

I ordered four books related to Interstellar .
Two of them just arrived in one big box .
The making of book and Kip Thorne's book about the science of the film .
Kip's book says on the cover that the answer to the movie's finale is inside .

I never got the exposition complaints about Nolan. Only in TDKR. People say Inception is like a lecture, it was fine for me. As long as the dialogue isn't boring as **** Im cool with it. It's space theory. Sometimes you just cant show things through visuals you do have to tell.

Anyway 3 questions for the folks in this thread who've seen it.

Just how much do the trailers give away? Cause all I get is most of it will take place on Earth and the Ice planet. Or is that really not the case?

How bizarre is the ending (without spoilers if that's possible) like does it just do a 180 or is it something thats hinted at?

Some reviews hinted that it was actually quite a fast paced film. Is that true?

Probably someone answered it , but i'll do it anyway.

First dont worry about exposition. Im starting to hate this word actually. This film has one clunky dialogue between two characters where they explain what is something. Its definitely bizarre. The rest is sorta natural. And in no way excessive. Quite the contrary i would say.

Trailers , to me they still give a lot. More visuals than anything. But not the plot points. Even about the earth stuff.

Not that bizarre actually. At least to me.

I'm I the only one that really liked Brands speech?

Nah. I always think myself as sorta of a cynic person in real life. But i get to the internet , and i feel much more emotional than the majority. I would love to meet these stoic Rambo's in real life. Her speech was not preachy. Was hopefulness. She was trying to convince another person to take the leap of faith with her. Appealing to something all of us can relate to.

Whether I liked it or not is irrelevant imo, as is Nolan's way every bit of the film (including this speech) was placed there with purpose.
Brands speech explains Murph's tenacity in finding her father/the answer to saving humanity. Why was she so adamant about searching her childhood bedroom for the key to some gravitational equation. What drove her to this? To Brand its about love. To Mann, it's about self-preservation. The balance, or defining those two things is what (by my interpretation) the film is about.

In the film, love overcomes time and space bringing Murph/Coop halfway across the universe over 90 years to prove to one another that they didn't give up on each other. It's the ultimate love story, non-romantic in nature.

In the same film, self-preservation transcends all possible universal obstacles to plant the foot of mankind on another planet, in another galaxy, in another time. It's the ultimate heroic epic. Non-selfless in nature.
Loved the film. 10/10

We all know what it is by now if you use the internet. People can't keep secrets.

sorry guys. realized lack of spoiler tags after about a minute.

I have one question about the overall plot of the film.

Literally could be a "hole."

The [blackout]wormhole near Saturn[/blackout] ... Who put it there? I realize that the [blackout]"They" referred to throughout the film, believed at first to be an entity or a God, is in fact just a future version of humans who have learned to harness the power of dimensions outside of the three we currently understand and thus were able to move through space and time and leave clues for current humanity to find to save themselves.[/blackout] Such as choosing [blackout]Murph as a savior, Cooper leaving the morse code in the watch/books and binary in the dust, etc.[/blackout] But Cooper could never have made it to [blackout]Gargantua and to its singularity[/blackout] without having gone through the [blackout]wormhole on the other side near Saturn.[/blackout] So its a Catch-22. Humans couldn't have evolved to gain [blackout]this future understanding of other dimensions to be able to PLACE the wormhole there for a past generation to find,[/blackout] without having ever gone through it in the first place.

And a future human other than [blackout]Cooper's generation could not have placed it there for a version of humanity in the past to find because Cooper/Murph's generations would be the last to exist on Earth.[/blackout]

I loved this film. It was provocative, beautiful and amazing. I love films that leave you with questions and inspire debate. However, plot-wise, this is the only thing I can't yet reconcile.

Anyone know?

WOW! Absolutely blown-away. Phenomenal performances, a pulse-pounding score, beautiful visuals, and a very intriguing and thought-provoking story. This is a perfect definition of a film; intense and fueled by the power of love! I cannot wait to see it again!

I love this film. It's become one of my favorite films. I hated Inception. People built up the ending and I love all of Nolan's other movies so I expected too much and was hoping it was going to have a crazier ending then it did. But this film had the ending I wanted. It is what I wanted Inception to be. There are many times where I was in awe on what was one screen. It was a great experience.

I am going to go see this movie Saturday night. I am hearing very mixed reactions to this movie, so I really don't want to get my hopes up and be disapointed like last week with Nightcrawler. I think Nolan is a fantastic film director but even he is not immune to having a dud movie.

Oh wow, you didn't like Nightcrawler?

But who knows, those two movies are nothing alike, so you may end up loving it.
