Interstellar - Part 8

Just got out of the theater. I always credit seeing the matrix when i was eleven as the moment i knew i wanted to make films. I just had that experience again. Interstellar reminds me why i want to do it. I think that's all i can come up with right now besides giberrish.

Christopher Nolan fan boys ready 2 defend this movie for life

How about this....you can discuss the movie, argue the movie, debate the movie....but leave the snippy asides and attacks against the people who don't share your opinion out of here.

I think Keira Knightley put it best. If you want more female lead films that have an actual female perspective, you need to hire more female directors. In other words, don't call Nolan. Call someone who knows what they are doing on that front.

That's why I love Keira so much. Not only is she beautiful and talented but she's also smart.

Ya know, I never paid much attention to her interviews until recently when I saw her on Graham Norton's show and I have to say I was really surprised at how witty, insightful and generally well-spoken she is. Wonderfully candid, too. I always thought she was a pretty good actress and that was about it, but lately I've really become a fan. She's awesome.

As my favorite actress from that particular peer group, it's so nice to see some Keira love. :hrt: She doesn't get enough credit IMO.

Her Graham Norton interviews are the best. So many golden moments. :funny:

In a behind-the-scenes scuffle that pits a very big movie, Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” against a very small one, “A Most Violent Year,” Ms. Chastain, a co-star in both, is being blocked from promoting her eye-catching performance as a mob princess in the smaller film.

That is because Mr. Nolan and others, for the most part, are enforcing an agreement that says she cannot campaign for any film but Mr. Nolan’s from early October through early December, with the exception of her appearance at the premiere on Thursday, according to people briefed on the dispute. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject for both sides.

This is kind of a **** move. This is not the first time an actor/actress has two awards baity movies out at the same time and as far as I can recall, said actor/actresses were allowed to promote both. Interstellar is a big movie and it's not like she's the only one that can promote it while A Most Violent Year is a small movie where she's the co-lead.

That is pretty crappy of Christopher Nolan & friends

It makes me wonder if she will be a Nolan regular or not after this one

My take on that is a contract is a contract. I am guessing she was paid handsomely for her work on Interstellar, which includes promoting the film. If she wants to break the contract, then pony up some cash for a buyout.

My company gets into bad contracts all the time but our department is forced to honor them no matter how unfair and unreasonable they might be for us to deal with. If only we had more of a say in the initial contracts, we would have a lot less headaches to deal with.

Good luck on her getting a nomination for a sci fi flick with semi disappointing reviews. That is going to be really, really tough to do. The Academy are going to have to adore this film and maybe they will but sci fi usually isn't adored by the Academy.

Yeah, Sigourney Weaver in Aliens is the only Sci Fi Oscar nom for acting that I can think of.

A Most Violent Year premieres in theaters on December 31st. If the contract lasts through early December why can't she promote that movie? She'll probably have two good weeks where she can.

It's just not a genre that rakes in the acting nominations. I could see MM getting a nod because he won last year and will be in their minds but Chastain? Two nods for a sci flick? As I said, good luck. Maybe if it's a runaway beloved box office smash.

Two things.

First, they make it sound like Nolan did it himself. I am sure this a studio thing.

Secondly, she was the one that signed the contract. This is Chastain if anyone.

Her interviews the last few years have all been fantastic. She seems so much more comfortable. Smart, down to earth and funny. :hrt:

I agree that it's a studio thing and not Nolan personally strong arming anyone. I just wonder if the contract is going to work out for her on the awards front.

And please nobody say that awards aren't at all important, they are obviously important to her because she campaigns to get a nom and a win.

Hopefully it simply means double the appearances. MY little brother has a crush on her, so I am sure that will make him happy. :woot:

The very thought of having to campaign is sickening in and of itself. None of them should have to do that. Messed up system.

Of course they have to campaign. The vast majority don't even watch the films they vote on. It is no wonder the Oscars rarely get it right.

Meh I wasn't trying to start a discussion on how much the Academy sucks. I'm just gabbing about this one story.

EDIT: God I really have to stop posting everything I think, I'm at my most unlikable when I do that.

I'm guessing because they'd need to do early screenings to the voters. Most of the awards bodies (other than the Oscars) announce their nominations by mid-December so the campaign almost always starts earlier than that especially for small movies.

Definitely. IIRC she even admitted it herself that getting older made her more laid back and comfortable.

I doubt it. She probably has a much better chance at getting a nod for the Chandor film, if buzz on it and Interstellar are correct. She probably really needs to do the screenings and get-togethers though, all the requisite hand-shaking.

One wonders if this might backfire on Interstellar's Oscar chances, the actors being the biggest branch of the Academy.

Yup, that was pretty much me last night. Picking up the pieces of my mind.

IMO anyone who's seen the film only once and is then able to then able boil down feelings about it to a letter or number score is quite frankly completely full of it (or MUCH, much more intelligent than me). For a movie this dense, it's tantamount to swallowing your food without chewing it. Granted, I understand that this the job that critics have to do, so I'm not accusing them. I've never been the biggest fan of Kris Tapley, but I respect that he admitted to needing a second viewing in order to get a better handle on the movie.

If you thought Inception was heavily analyzed...this might end up becoming the most dissected and debated sci-film in years. The conversation about this movie won't be short-lived, that I'm sure of. I can't wait to read all the things that are going to be written about this film by much better minds than mine.

Personally I'm just really craving a second viewing right now. I need it in order to clarify my thoughts.

Chastain wants to start campaigning for her other film now, but legally can't do it since Insterstellar is the priority. But she could do it once her other film is set for release. WB is in the right. I doubt Nolan has anything to do with it.

Scarlett was out promoting Under The Skin and Lucy cause they happen to be released on the same week, which isn't the case with Chastain.

Also, some are just going after Nolan now. Oh lawd.

"But she noted that Mr. Nolan had personally helped her get out of an appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman so she could attend the premiere for A Most Violent Year.”
