Is the Punisher REALLY insane?

Did anyone read Punisher: Barracuda? I was wondering whether Frank was truly sane when he blew up that corporate cruise liner leaving everyone on that sinking ship, innocent or otherwise, to be shark's food. Insanity?

Nobody on that boat was innocent. They were all in on the plan to black out Florida for the insurance money. Screw the hospitals, gorcery stores, etc, etc.

That's a pretty insightful assesment. However, one thing about the incident in Civil War 6: I don't think that Frank killed those two villains because he couldn't control himself. It seemed more like he felt he had to kill them then and there before Cap even had a chance to accept their offer. I think he was just sacrificing himself to keep Cap's image untarnished.
But see, that's a bit crazy. That's so warped, so detached from a normal mental process.

What's to stop Cap from just finding some other fluffy villains to work with after he kicked Frank's ass out for killing these two? Frank's outburst served no purpose than to get himself a broken face; no one thought he was doing them any favors, no one's going to thank him, everyone just thinks he's even more of an uncontrollable maniac. And yet Frank somehow thinks he's accomplished some amazingly altruistic, matyr-like behavior?

Yeah, that's a bit

.

The last sentence of Nasty-B's post makes zero sense as well, considering at that point his image was extremely tarnished. Don't you guys remember the 9/11 poster that attacked him?

A poster came to life and attacked Cap? What, with paper cuts?

Well, Frank was probably trying to save HIS image of Captain AMerica more than anything else. I just don't think he could personally stomach the thought of witnessing his (recently retconned) idol cutting a deal with a couple of two-bit thugs.

That's not sounding any saner

. You're giving him a reason for his behavior, but it's no good if the reason is just whacked out too. If you can't "stomach a thought" enough to prevent yourself from killing two people in public then, I mean, there's a word for people like that.

He doesn't act like that all the time, and even when it happened I called bullsht characterization, but it's there. There it is.

Frank Castle is an emotionally empty man. I'm not saying he's indifferent or morally bankrupt. But everything that gives him hope is dead. Thus, Castle can no longer can enforce justice through the system. That's why he kills his enemies instead getting them arrested. So to a point, he is insane. But he is not unreasonable.

He does not take pleasure in doing what he does, and I do not think he wants to do it.
It is not like he goes around killing criminals and laughs hysterically.

If this isn't insane, I don't really know what is. For a fact, he's highly delusional:

That was pretty cool. There just isn't enough white supremest villains to kill and maim in comics these days.

BrianWilly, you're a Joss Whedon fan, so you've probably read the two issues of Runaways Joss has written so far. Tell me, is it sane to fire a rocket launcher at a group of unarmed children, without warning, just because they are breaking into an unoccupied building, with the intent to steal?

Joss Whedon has stated that he hates the Punisher, so his portrayal is a little skewed. It's just so out of character for him to shoot at kids. Still, I guess you can't just pick and choose what continuity you want to acknowledge...unless your last name is Ellis or Bendis. Also, BrianWilly: I wasn't trying to say that the incident in Civil War showed that Frank wasn't crazy, I was just saying that he had a motivation to do it beyond simply having an uncontrolable compulsion to kill criminals on the spot. I do think he's kinda crazy, but he's not irrational.

That's pretty much why I ignored most of the civil war spin offs....most of the writers were so far to the left that trying to at least make a balanced argument is out of the question, and it becomes said writers politcal platform.

So basically what you're saying is that you ignore whole stories about Frank Castle because what? You don't agree with the writer's politics? How can you make a statement then about a character's personality, when you ignore the parts of it you don't like?

If the writer writes the character completely out of character, then yes, I will ignore it.

Same reason I ignore Hulk destroying Gladiator, that's just not that character.

If you don't like the character, don't use him just because you have a massive ego trip going and you need to justify your position in your mind.

But it's funny because Mark Millar wrote Civil War and he ****ing loves The Punisher....

I'm pretty sure he doesn't....he is very, very left wing, and as you can see from the ultimates, anyone who doesn't take crap is usually considered a dick in his books...so I don't see him really liking punisher.

Oh but he does.

Liberal people don't take crap too. Just shoot their aunt from across the street and see the reaction.

OK Now I can't tell if you are being sarcastic :oldrazz:

I'm not. Have you ever even read a Millar comic outside Ultimates? The guy is about ****, ass, violence and cursing. Seriously, have you read Wanted? The guy loves the Punisher.
