Russo Explains Why He's Still In Wrestling, His Relationship With Hogan

With professional wrestling’s Super Bowl set to air this weekend in WrestleMania, wrestling’s most controversial personality from behind the camera from a creative standpoint and in front of the camera as an on air personality is speaking out about a long running controversy he wants to put to an end. Vince Russo who was a big part of the highest ratings for Vince McMahon in the late 90s when wrestling was at its peak was involved in one of the industry’s most controversial incidents involving Hulk Hogan back in 2000 at a pay perview event with the now defunct WCW.

Many of the industry’s fans and even insiders believed that the angle between Hogan and Vince Russo possibly was a shoot when Russo recently revealed it really was all work. That didn’t stop Hulk Hogan from filing a defamation lawsuit vs. Vince Russo that was thrown out in court in 2003.

A decade later, Vince Russo is currently writing the television in creative at the WWE’s main competition TNA where Hogan is currently working. Russo would like to end the rumors once and for all telling Chris Yandek of CYInterview.com, “I’ll be honest. People, it doesn’t matter what I say and it seems like every single word out of my mouth gets twisted by the wrestling media. They just need a story. The story is I’m getting along great with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff [Hogan’s right hand man] and that’s the story and the story is that I’m thrilled to death that they both made the decision to join TNA. They have pumped such energy into the product. I know they have pumped energy into me personally.”

Russo goes on to note that the new environment has helped him put it all behind him compared to the time he worked at WCW where the incident went down, “And having the experience to work with both of these individuals in a different environment than the negativity in WCW that was happening at the time it just sheds a whole new perspective on it and now I can really appreciate what Hulk and what Eric bring to the table. Individually I can really appreciate that when 10 years ago I couldn’t do that because of the mindset that I had because of WCW. It’s been great for me. It’s been great for TNA and if you ask them I think it’s been great for them as well.”

Russo also noted with all the lows he's been through the reason he's still in the business and has never walked away is because he feels professional wrestling has limited other employment opportunities, "As soon as I got in the wrestling business, the downfall was that I knew I was painting myself in the corner because I knew that once I was choosing this as what I did for a living there just weren’t many options for me. Wrestling isn’t a computer company. There’s not a hundred other companies to go out there and get employed. At the time it was WWF and WCW. So like I knew early on that if I succeeded in the wrestling business I really didn’t have too many options and that really has rang true throughout my entire career. There’s not many places to take the background I have in professional wrestling."

Finally, Russo says it could take many years for TNA to be competitive with the WWE, "Obviously now it’s the Monday night war. I’d be lying to you if I told you I wouldn’t have the greatest satisfaction in the world to overtake Vince McMahon even if it’s two, three, four years. That would give me great, great satisfaction just on a personal level looking back on some of the issues that I’ve had with him, but there’s always new challenges."

They changed McIntyre's music again?

Guess not? Now I'm confused.

TNA has bloated itself way too big. You've got guys in the X-Division and tag teams that aren't getting ANY tv time because of the Nastyz and Hogan and the Wolfpac.

Guys that need to be cut out of storylines/released/lessened tv time:

Nastyz
Wolfpac
Eric Young
Rob Terry
Hogan
Shannon Moore
Foley (Hopefully he becomes an announcer)
Abyss (Just needs a character reconstruction, FAST)
Sean Morely
Flair (Keep him out of the ring)
Orlando Jordan
Magnus (He either needs to get with Williams again and be a tag team or just be released)
Bischoff/Jarrett (Their feud needs to end soon and Bischoff needs less tv time)

If you cut all of that fat off, and bring back Joe, you could have a great product to work with and build around.
What's wrong with Magnus? If anything, Rob Terry is more dead weight than Magnus would ever be.

It's for the WWE Title, it's the first Mania title match with the two biggest stars of a specific era in years (either X-Seven or 22), and it is more likely to have a happier ending than HBK/Taker will. You're either gonna see the streak end or a career end in that match. Either way, you're sad. This is the right way to go.

If this were a sport I'd agree, but the bottom line is we have seen it time and again, when a dream match doesn't go last is saps the energy out of the crowd and leaves the main event with no crowd participation and no reactions to the finish.

not surprised Punk likes GI Joe (the huge freakin Cobra tat) or comics in general since wrestling has a lot in common with superhero comics. Cool interview.

I like Eric Young but him coming out at the end and saying RVD and Jeff were his partners was just to random and he was out there holding their hands up way to long.

Even Jeff thought it was funny. You can tell by him KEEPING his hand up and then the "snapping out of it" head gesture. I don't get what Hardy and Van Dam have to do with the Wolfpac.

It was smart to announce it live at the end of the show though. Same thing with the 1st blood match. A lot of people don't go online or may miss tv ads. TNA needs to do that more often.

It was a very awkward situation, especially the hand holding bit, no idea why they all just kept standing there.

So I caught up on this weeks TNA PPV and Impact, a few thoughts!

- Despite the stupid ending to the PPV (Yes Hulk we know what you are doing brother!) I thought AJ was HBK 96 level good in the way he made the match work with Abyss, just a perfect carry job.

- TNA has a much more exciting set of prospective title matches this year than WWE does.

- RVD and Hardy have given TNA an energy boost, they and Joe need to replace Abyssamania and the Abyssites () as the top faces.

- The Ultimate X match was the best spotfest I have seen in ages and Destination X also was Anderson best match since he worked with HBK, the PPV was an all round decent show.

- Morgan and Hernandez has been lazily booked and having Morgan play chicken **** heel was idiotic.

- Bischoff's whole role in TNA still makes no sense.

- Chelsea has a fantastic ass.

Agreed that Rob Terry is the dead weight, but there's nothing really, I think, for Magnus to do except the X division, which Doug Williams is already champ in. Dropping Rob Terry, there's nothing really for Magnus to do, and I don't like there being a "British Invasion" if they're doing their own thing, not to mention I think they work better as a tag team, though Williams has shown very great things as X Division champ.

Oh come on Hunter, you don't wanna ride the Abyssamania wave brotha? :funny:

Orlando Jordan, who has not appeared on TNA programming since the Feb. 18th edition of iMPACT!, resurfaces this Monday night on iMPACT! with a character "unlike anything you've ever seen before."

The show, which was taped this past Tuesday in Orlando, Fla., saw Jordan lowered into the ring from the arena's rafters wrapped in yellow police tape with the TNA logo. He then crawled through the ring and ultimately walked to a nearby white couch where he sat between a shirtless male and a sexy female. Behind the trio is the tri-colored bisexual pride flag, plus two male symbols and one female symbol. In an Impact Zone first, the segment garnered a "that was creepy" chant.

To add further details, Jordan has changed his hair again and is now wearing makeup. He also comes out barefoot à la "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka.

For those interested, here are the images of his grand ring entrance and sitting on the couch:

He does seem to be the odd man out, doesn't he? If this was WWE, he's be fired in about a week.

I can't see this becoming successful, especially with such a weak talent behind it.

:lmao:.......Yeah..that's never getting over, between the homophobes and the fact it looks stupid the whole thing will be canned inside of 6 weeks IMO.

People elsewhere are saying that he could be the next Goldust from yesteryear.

Yeah. Outside of his feud with Rob Terry, there's nothing for him, unless they want to make him the Global champ, whatever that means. It would be a decent middle ground for him if he became Global Champ and competed against the midcard guys for a while.

I PRAY they cut that segment with Orlando Jordan. It just looks awful. I'd rather watch Flair, AJ, and Wolfe fall down the rabbit hole again.

TNA should keep Magnus on even if its to be a part time unit with Williams. The guys a decent talent. ok on the mike. Contributes more than Orlando Jordan or The Nasties anyway.

i'm gonna go back in time and change Owen's ropes with Orlando Jordan's ropes from Monday. Owen will continue to strive and become the cerebral assassin (that character was written for him at first) and Orlando Jordan will fall and die, and in one weeks time, no one will remember his name.

did they just used the brave heart soundtrack for HBK? :hehe:

I appreciate a good WM setup, but this show could have used one more match. See why Monday was a Supershow taping.

yuck, the hatchetman logo. the only think i hate about wrestling fans, they're associated with juggaloes and ICP

why is he there at all? it's not becaus eof his amazing wrestling ability

FAIL.

No, I take that back .

FAIL INFINITY.

This entire segment is so awful it makes the Shockmaster look like a competent piece. What are they smoking at TNA?

First they keep Bubba the butt sponge, and release Awesome Kong, the best female wrestler on their roster and now this?

Why isn't someone showing Jordan the door?

That Orlando Jordan crap looks awful! I don't know why TNA expects that to draw because it won't.

According to Jason Powell of ProWrestling.Net, there was some sort of incident between Orlando Jordan's boyfriend and a TNA headlining act. How come I get the feeling it was either AJ Styles, Sting, or Kurt Angle??

Orlando Jordan's bisexual character scored an article on the Outsports website, which featured the following description of a segment that will air on Monday's pre-taped show" "Jordan is lowered into the ring

from the arena’s rafters wrapped in yellow police tape with the TNA logo.

Jordan then crawls through the ring and ultimately walks to a nearby white couch where he sits between a shirtless male and a sexy female. Behind the trio is the tri-colored bisexual pride flag, plus two male symbols and one female symbol." To read the full story, visit

Powell's POV: Dot Net Members are currently reading a story about the backstage reaction to the character, as well as a second story about an incident that occurred between Jordan's male companion and a headline act. Nothing makes the Shockmaster look competent. But this still sucks. I think WWE even toyed with the idea before Jordan was released.

The guy is really Orlando's boyfriend? My guess is AJ was the one, I've not heard of Kurt being homophobic and while Sting is religious and may not like the sexualized angle, he is a veteran and a professional with the stroke to get the gimmick nixed rather than get into some backstage spat.
