You guys had a chance.

Good for you, now take your Kung Fu down to the nearest Boxing Gym and ask a heavyweight your age for a fight.

Can I bring my laser?

you did the right thing by just giving them the little bit of change and ending it... I know it seems like they "won" this, but you didn't get seriously injured, shot, or stabbed, and you should be very thankful. I know how easy it is to get angry and want to fight back, and it might have been an option, but a couple pounds is not worth risking serious injury.

the first thing I teach people in my self defense classes is that you don't have to Hollywood-style attempt to fight back. the easiest and quickest way to end the confrontation is the best. no need to drag it out and risk life and limb for a few bucks and some self esteem... no need to lose dignity over the situation, you should be proud

You should have ripped your friends bike chain off and whipped them into submission.

Haha. I'll think about getting a laser for next time :D

When I say you should fight back and defend yourself...

It really depends on the situation. You have to know, just case by case basis, if it's the right time to act tough. And when you act tough, it has to come off natural. Don't force it too much.

I understand Electrix that these guys are older than you, and they were what? 19? So you're fairly young. Just take it from me... when you're older, at the point where you are actually a couple of years older than the types of losers that do this... just play it right and they won't even think about touching you.

I'll give you an example. I was in a shopping mall a while back, months ago. I'm just walkin' along minding my own business. I become aware that a group of guys are looking at me, not far behind me. They were all about 18. I can hear them say stuff under their breath, obviously about me, then bursting out laughing. So they're actually making fun of me, and laughing, but doing it so I can't actually hear. I think "hmm... I'll tolerate this for about 5 more seconds". Five seconds later, when they're still doing it, I turn around fast and just look the main one (the one that had been saying stuff) right in the face.

I said something like "If you have something to say you say it to my ****ing face, don't say it behind me under your breath!! You say it to my ****ing face!!! So you wanna say what you said?? Go on say it!!!"

The guy freaked out! The fear in his eyes was great! He tried to keep face in front of his friends, but he was clearly taken aback and he was clearly shaken. He tried talking tough, but it was laughable. Before I left I said "next time say it to my face *******". I basically made him look like the idiot he was.

I wouldn't recommend that for someone your age, Electrix. And like I said, you need to get a feel for when you can get away with that kind of thing.

I have seen fights where there is like 5 on 2 and three against one. In those fights, the lesser number won. Just don't let them trap you or circle around you. Make sure you always have your back toward a wall or something so they can't surround you. Let them make the first move, and then you strike.

I don't agree with this. They are going to hurt him anyway. Who's to say they're not the type of *******s that would seriously injure someone regardless of whether they fought back or not?

If you can fight back, you should. I seriously think fighting back will save your life more often than just saying "yeah... sure... take my mobile and change... please don't hurt me".

But they don't realise how stupid they sound. The poor guy has just been mugged as well. He doesn't need people online telling him he should have fought back etc.

It's not really about being tough. It's about... I don't know... looking and sounding tough. I'm 5'11 roughly. The group of guys were a couple of years younger. It just seemed like the type of situation where I could definately "act tough" and freak them out.

This is what I think. The meeker you act around guys like this, the more likely it is that they'll think you are easy pickings and kick the crap out of you. If they're younger than you, and you act like a hardass, 9 times out of 10 (I've yet to have a fight after all the times I've done the "act tough" thing) they will back off.

And you did, which is good. If you would have hit him back they probably would have beat you down and you'd be in a hospital right now. Don't listen to the E-Ninjas, you did well.

LOL. That is kinda what you do in fights, you think about what you are going to do the person, but sometimes that doesn't work for me because of the adernaline rush. But its not good just to unleash your anger on them, you have to concentrate when you are fighitng.

Why say stuff like this online? The guy has been mugged and your talking about your "tough guy act", Which trust me won't work in most pubs when you get old enough to go in them.

I have to say... I just don't think this is right. If you can fight back, fight back.

Some of these guys are real monsters. It was in the news the other week, about a group of three guys that killed two students for no reason at all! There was CCTV footage. The footage showed these men walking down the street at night, and these two guys just talking to each other on a corner. The head guy of the 3 man group just starts attacking one of them, punches him and he fell to the ground. The other guy backed off, holding his hand up. The other two guys ran over, proceeded to kick the guy on the ground, and then they attacked the other guy. The footage cuts off at that point. These guys made no attempt to fight back, but it didn't matter. These men are animals.

You just have to think about it like this. If a group of guys are willing to give you a black eye just for some change, what's to say they wouldn't kick the crap out of you just for kicks?

That's the point, you have NO idea how a situation may turn out. He got punched and lost change. Imagine if he hand kung-fu slapped one guy, and another guy pulled out a gun and shot him? What if they planned on going for money but wanted to try and get it done with numbers and keep the gun hidden, but then he pissed them off with the tough guy crap and they shot him? You're making the best point of all, you NEVER know what will happen in a situation like that. You are basically saying "No matter what, FIGHT!!!"

Yes that sort of thing happens, but most muggings do not turn out that way. Those were not muggers I saw the footage as well. They were all caught and prosecuted, it doesn't help the dead person. Most muggers do not want attention they want to be out of there with as little fuss as possible so they can leave the area.
