The Amazing Spider-Man J Jonah Jameson in the Reboot

Not introducing JJJ, Betty, Robby, and Peter's photo career until the second or third movie is an excellent way to keep the franchise from getting stale too soon. When you try to cram everything into the first film, you're squandering potential story ideas and opportunities to develop Spidey's character. By having Peter be in love with MJ since first grade, Raimi effectively skipped over years of Spidey stories. That's why Webb is taking Pete back to high school and LEAVING him there until they need to take him in a new and different direction.

Signs advertising the Daily Bugle don't necessarily mean Jameson's in the movie, or that he'll even be mentioned. They just help to immerse us in Marvel's version of New York City.

It wasn't from a purely "flow of the story" standpoint but the problem is that this is a SUPERHERO movie. Some things are just expected to be shown and if they're not then connosuier's like me and many others of the genre tend to feel cheated. Imagine if Donner had done it the Raimi way on the scene of the night Superman first starts his superhero career? That would've sucked as it was one of the most enjoyable parts of the film. But the story would have basically been unchanged.

Coincidentally, I was just thinking about that scene this morning. I was incredibly disappointed by the montage. Instead of showcasing Spidey's abilities and personality, garnering enthusiasm and possibly even cheers from his audience, Raimi decides to go with a series of quickly edited shots so we never even see him?! The scene with the guy stealing the woman's purse was a golden opportunity for Spidey to make some humorous quips and toy with the bad guy like he does with the car thief in TASM, but Raimi has him shoot past us in a blur and leave a note. I just can't understand what he was thinking.

Stalling that element until the third film would be an awful idea, imo.

And only using JJJ and the entire element of Daily Bugle and its staff for one film would be distasteful. Better to introduce that element in the sequel and expand it in the threequel. One complaint I had with the Daily Bugle in Raimi's series is that he could expand that element, to which he never did.

How is that lame? It gives him a far more justified reason for hating Spider-Man than simply being jealous and gives him as a character more depth. It worked fine for what the cartoon needed for the story. (Never mind that his wife WAS killed by a mugger in the comics).

That's not true. If it were, JJJ would be a moron, since he is the one who shoves Spider-Man into the media the most.

In one of the first ASM comics, JJJ says why he hates Spider-Man:

He states he is jealous of Spider-Man not because of media attention like you say, but because JJJ feels he can never look at himself as a good man while Spider-Man is out doing good for nothing in return.

I think Cranston would be able to pull off JJJ.

I will always miss J.K. Simmons though. He embodied JJJ perfectly. I had always hoped they would pull a James Bond and make him the only actor to reprise his role ala Judi Dench as M...but they seem very keen on keeping this universe differentiated in all ways possible.

It's lame because it's a trite justification for Jameson's hatred of Spidey that was written decades after his character was created. Stan Lee never felt the need to "explain" why Jameson hates Spidey -- it's just the kind of guy he is. Does a character have to have some all-encompassing traumatic event in his past to justify every feeling or opinion he has? I like comics, my wife doesn't. But nobody strapped her to a chair and inflicted multiple paper cuts on her with the pages of an Archie comic when she was little.

Yes he did. Like I said in my last post, one of the earliest Spidey comics dealt with this. ASM#10.

He compares himself to Spider-Man. He is a man interested in one thing: Making money, yet Spider-Man risks his life every day without reward. "I can never respect myself while he lives!" moans J.J.J. and he envies Spider-Man as he is everything that he is not. "I'd give everything I own to be the man that he is!" and "All that remains for me is to try and tear him down, because I'm jealous of him!"

And there are plenty of other instances in the comics as well.

Tragic event? No. But when you've got a huge chip on your shoulder, from a character standpoint, it's good to have a reason, and even better if it's one that can at least be sympathized with.

Yes he does. But it's because, as his reasoning in ASM #10 and other issues points out, he does so because he wants to knock Spider-Man down so he can feel better about himself. He also believes (at last publicly) that Spider-Man thinks he is better than everyone else and his actions are nothing more than him flaunting his superiority and that his battles are either staged, or that the bad guys wouldn't exist if Spider-Man wasn't around.
