James Bond: 007 - Spectre - Part 8

Coming in here with what seems like an unpopular opinion so far, but I like the theme song!

It keeps that bombastic Bond feel in the instrumental and in some of the phrasings like in the title line, but beyond that it's also a damn pretty little ditty with strong emotional resonance. The high-pitched parts gives the song dynamics in a sparse setting, I don't hear the chipmunks complaints rather than an emotional, well controlled falsetto.

Just heard the song. Kept waiting for it to kick up the tempo but it never did. It bored me after twenty seconds. Then kept going.

That's what I kept thinking while I was listening to it.

30 second in:

Good start, waiting for the song to take off.

1 Minute in:

Not bad, but still waiting for it to take off.

2 Minutes in:

.... The song isn't gonna take off, isn't it?

3 Minutes in:

BO-RING! BO-RING! BO-RING!

I only heard a preview and so far it sounds very dull and insipid. It's just a man having angst about some lost love or something and not really fitting for a spy film. Does it stay at that same level past the first verse and chorus or do any drums and other orchestration kick in?

I didn't want a ballad. Is it even a power ballad? We should've had a more aggressive rock song. What's their obsession with ballads?

Apparently he only wrote this in 20 minutes. I think he should have given this more thought and not just decided he'll do another soulful love song as he always does.

If this gets to number 1 it would be undeserving and ironic that the dullest Bond song has that honor while other better ones don't.

What you hear in the first verse is the way it is for the rest of the song. And it ends a bit like a weak fart. Just sorta putters out.

It ain't flat-out Bond-bombastic but it hints at that feel of it in parts of the string arrangement and in some of the melodic turns.

I like it as it is not as expected and keeps a tension while making way for a more soulfully emotional song.

They actually did this with Moneypenny. Reveals that aren't reveals for anyone in the story. Its the same thing they did with "Robin John Blake." Yuck.

I can see a case for Moneypenny, but i had no problem with John Blake at all, it wasn't supposed to be some important plot element, more like a neat inside joke for fans. I actualy liked that part of the film.

Bond didn't seem to know Moneypenny's last name until the end though, which seems a bit unrealistic and rather odd, especially since most of them seem to call each other by their last names rather than first names. How was she introduced then when she was still in the field? Agent Eve?

I dont know why this part made me laugh so hard but it did

It's more reserved than bombastic. But I think it's overly reserved. Like what many have said here, it feels almost sparse. Like we're waiting during the build-up and then it ends.

If they kept the song the way it is, but gave it someone who was more vocally interesting, like Lorde, she would've killed it regardless of the arrangements.

but I got a feeling that EON wanted a male singer, and settled on Sam Smith.

Nah I dont think Lorde wouldve done any better. Same with lana Del Ray and I really like her

I dont think the singer is necessarily the problem at all, just the production/direction of the song.

And Eon and whoever else runs this franchise had three years to get their **** together for this film and they waited until the last damn minute and then went with the first recording of a half-assed song...

I disagree and agree. I guess I don't like Sam's singing style but the arrangements doesn't feel complete, or well thought out.

It's weird because back in the day when the elder Broccoli was in charge, they had high standards, sometimes having multiple versions of themes for one movie, and only keeping the one they like (or sometimes use the alt version for the end credits.)

It was kinda shocking that they we not more urgent on the script problems. Maybe because Logan is such an established writer already and was one of the reasons for Skyfall's success.

Yeah that's some ole bulls***

I mean there are people who are able to create great pieces of work in little time. And honestly if he really did this in 20 mins then that's impressive to me. But it's still not good. I mean if he created this in 20 minutes, he couldve done crazy well with a week or hell a month.

I know some people have the train of thought of "if I wait until the last minute then the pressure will make me a better writer," but I think that's crap too

I've listened to the whole thing now. The problem is it sounds like a musical number. A kind of big ballad where the main character is faced with a choice at the end of the second act.

If you imagine it is Elsa singing it in Frozen 2 and wondering how she can live or breathe and risk it all, or imagine Lea Michelle is singing it in an episode of Glee, then on that level the song works. But as a Bond title song it doesn't.

What's going on with your spotify?

My spotify app on my computer is all ****ed up this morning. It will play music for a bit then the sound goes out and if I click on a song in my playlist is starts shuffling through my playlist rapidly like it's trying to play all the songs on top of each other. And I can only get it to work in a browser if it's embedded in another website. The spotify site isn't working for me either. Don't know if it's an issue on my end or an issue with spotify's servers.
