Well i didn't know Pratt didn't have consent. But it's still very different from what Gunn said. Pratt is friends with many of the cast and crew. He was reprimanded. Gunn is getting reprimanded in a way right now

Gunn is being reprimanded, indeed.

It's different, but it's not better. Its actions vs words. And it's TWITTER! Twitter still allows nudity. Twitter is an R rated zone if you ask me?

You consider a joke on twitter worse than non-consensual exposure in a professional setting?

I consider non-consensual exposure in a professional setting worse than a joke on twitter.

First of all, it's not a matter of what's worse. They should be judged separately.

Secondly, "it's just a joke bruh" is a dumb excuse. It's not funny and if you do it over and over again... it becomes even less of a joke.

Freedom of speech =/= Freedom from criticism or disapproval. Like C. Lee said, you shouldn't be put in jail for it, as long as you aren't inciting violence.

My mentality is this: You are free to be an a-hole if you want (and I will fight for your right to be an a-hole without legal consequences) ... But if you end up with no friends and nobody who wants to work with you, then that's your choice.

I'd say it a bit more than a "joke" on Twitter. It was pretty disturbing in all actuality.

I would understand the outrage behind Gunn's firing if he had made one or two off-color jokes that were in poor taste. Everybody has been guilty of a faux pas in their life, and I bet everyone has been guilty of making a joke that didn't land well.

The fact is that he had to delete 10,000 tweets that he posted during a certain period of time because he made so many tweets involving being inappropriate with kids and wanted to make sure he got rid of all of them. Sorry. "It's just a joke, bruh" doesn't cut it.

This is setting a bad precedent. Words are words, you should be able to say whatever you want, when you want. Not until you physically act on those words should you ever be punished. If we keep sensoring people over everything that hurts someone’s feelings, we will literally have vocabularies that consist of two words. This is happening over in the UK and it will only get worse here if everyone keeps it up. We should follow our constitution more strictly, they didn’t make the first amendment address freedom of speech for no reason

The first amendment means the government can't act against the people for things that they say. If a very large group of people were protesting Donald Trump outside the White House then Trump can't have those people arrested because they are merely exercising their freedom of speech. If a cast member at a Disney theme park started yelling obscenities and insults at guests then Disney has the right to fire that employee for that.

People do need to remember: Freedom of speech is not freedom of consquence. You can say whatever you want. Nothing is stopping you from yelling bomb on an airplane. But that doesn't mean there are not consequences for your actions, like risking your job or being punched in the face.

I don't feel so good.

Okay okay okay. I wish James Gunn hadn't been fired. I truly want to live in the world where the vision of his trilogy could be fully realized. The first two were amazing. I don't fault Gunn for dumb jokes from 10 years ago. Just like I would hope people don't fault me for the same.

I personally think there are way worse offenders (for instance, Bryan Singer and Donald Trump) who get off essentially scott free.

That being said, it's disney's choice, not mine. So **** it. Bring on the new blood.

Anyone want to make bets on Sean Gunn's future with the franchise? I only ask because he had some inappropro tweets as well.

I agree with everything here except for the bolded part.

Punching someone in the face is assault ... Unless it was in physical self-defense. Words are not a good enough reason to punch someone, no matter how much you may hate those words.

It's assault and another crime, yes. But it is a possible consequence of you saying something stupid, LOL! That's all I was saying. We can debate whether it is right to hit someone, but that doesn't change that it happens.

His future is done. Bigger question is Feige kept saying that they were going more cosmic in the next phase and Gunn would be a part of that in terms of guiding it. So I assume they are still going cosmic but do they bring in someone else?

I don't understand why some people keep saying that something worse was done over there and people didn't get fired. Well....that's over there...where he worked wasn't over there. There is no universal law that says....you do X....you get this done to you. There are different rules and laws for everything everywhere. One company may think it is hilarious to joke about raping children....they may give you a promotion and a raise if they think it is particularily funny.....but he worked for Marvel/Disney....and they didn't like it. So he was fired.

I don't think the cosmic focus will change. But yes, they will need to find a new person or group of people to fill Gunn's void. That is definite.

Sad to lose James Gunn.
What if Sean Gunn or Chris Pratt leave in reaction?:csad:

Sean Gunn might, but they can always work around Kraglin's loss and get another mo-cap actor for Rocket. Not as bad a loss. Pratt is under contract still as far as I know, so he won't have much choice. I think that applies for all the Guardians.

I think with this Disney may have shot themselves in the foot. These were statements he made several years ago and even apologized for at the time, plus this whole thing began with Trump supporters bringing this to the attention of Disney as a hit in retaliation for Disney firing Rosanne.

Now if Disney does not hold all of their talent to the same standard, they will become hypocrites. Some of them have social media skeletons and some of them have done even worse things in real life than make offensive jokes. They know about them, they knew about this beforehand. So if they don't start firing several of their talent, not just in the MCU, to show they are not hypocrites, I am completely done with the brand.

I know they won't miss me, they are a corporate juggernaut, but that does not matter. What matter's is a person's conscience, if other people are fine with hypocrisy or enabling information warfare that's a personal choice for them, whatever helps them sleep at night and get through life. I will sleep better with my choice.

They should also start going through the social media history of everyone from the CEO all the way down to the lowly janitors. If Gunn can be fired for what he said years ago then it should be the same for someone as high up as Iger. But we all know that wont happen.

This whole social media court system is all about knee jerk reactions and ass covering. There is no standard or set of rules. And it's all way way way too messy and case by case. Hypocrisy and double standards are inevitable until we as a society decide on some sort of standard. And I have no damn clue how we can do that as long as social media and free speech operates with a wild west mentality.

I also find it confusing that some are questioning why this is a fireable offense. Of course it is.

Succinct

This really isn't one of those situations though. He "joked" about raping children. What hypocrisy or double standards would come into play here?

I still think Marvel will be fine. Directors are disposable for them because they aren't the masterminds. They're basically there to just manage production. And with the Fox acquisition, they don't really need Guardians of the Galaxy.

They'll find someone else. Fortunately Marvel is producer driven. Then actors after them. If this was Feige or Chris Pratt then I'd be extremely concerned. The way they have things setup, the directors are replaceable.

Gee I had to read the headline several times when I saw that. I kept checking the source like I thought it was clickhole or something.

Anyway, obviously dumb things to say. I wish they had used it as a learning opportunity though. To say “hey I said dumb things online and here’s why that’s bad” instead of just nuking him because maybe that could have stopped someone else from thinking they can say dumb things online and not have consequences.

But it is what it is. Gee it’s huge news though. I just hope some sort of comicsgater type thing didn’t get him

Yeah, I'm on James'side here. I believe people can change and redeem themselves if they really want. I don't think he's the same person he was ten years ago. Very sad to see him go, but I guess Disney has an image to prevent.

When exactly did he redeem himself over this situation?
