Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!!

I sort of saw this coming. Given reaction I was seeing from people this morning, I could tell the end was coming for James Gunn. His tweets were bad. But I would be lying if I didn't say on a creative level, this saddens me. Both Guardians films bear his personality so much, I don't think any replacement director can make it like James or craft the cosmic universe like he did. Unless it is like Taika Waititi. He could do it.

I understand this decision. I don't blame Disney. But I won't lie, this hurts my Guardians Vol. 3 hype. It's Marvel, so of course I will give the next director a chance. I just have a hard time believing Vol 3 will turn out as good as 1 and 2 at this point.

Why are fans so loyal to James Gunn more than they were to Joss Whedon?

While his tweets in the spotlight are bad. I won't argue that.

The decision to fire him over them are controversial as they were years old and he had, months or years later, attempt to take back those comments.

But that's the unfortunate part of this situation... James Gunn didn't say these comments yesterday it was just unearthed and he apologized saying he's changed and so forth.

However, everyone is extremely sensitive over in Twitter as well, with what Rosanne being canceled for comments about a sitting congress woman and all.

So (shrug) just understand now that your comments, new or old, in twitter can and will be used against you if you're in a position that is exposed to the public.

Holy... This was totally unexpected.
I'm surprised and shocked.

Man i absolutely love GOTG and it's one of my favorite MCU movies. GOTG2 was a step down in my opinion but still... The guardians are so freaking awesome and now he is out of the third movie. What a shame.

He even made the mistake of revealing that he was searching his own Twitter history to delete stuff. He accidentally posted a tweet that said he was searching through a specific time period of tweets as well.

Horn is ABOVE Feige. It's his responsibility. Feige had no say.
feige is head of marvel studios, if he wanted gunn gone, i feel like marvel would just issue a statement

anybody who has followed/been aware of gunn the past few years, ESPECIALLY after he was announced as the GOTG1 guy, knew of his edgy stuff. but the fact of the matter is, is that he DID apologize for it back in 2012, and is obviously not the person the concern-trolls who brought this up to begin with are trying to claim he is. they just want a scalp for the sake of having a scalp

there is no way way feige/marvel/possibly disney didn't do their due diligence before they hired gunn and didn't know

i believe horn made it as a simple business call. a stupid call one but a business call.

on the flip side i can admit that there is the chance that maybe feige did want to cut him loose but didn't want him/the studio to look bad with the hardcore base and what's why horn issued the statement, although i seriously doubt that

I can't blame Disney as a business... but this is why you NEED to do background check on all your employees. That includes social media as it will always come back to haunt.

As for Guardians 3, there's always somebody else waiting in the wings. They'll be fine.

He apologized for his blog. His twitter was something different.

How was this a stupid call?

He apologized and atoned for those "jokes" and statements in 2012. What was he supposed to do? This hyper-sensitive zero tolerance, off with their heads mob mentality the internet has is extremely dangerous. He came clean that he was in the wrong with what he posted IN TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE.

This was wrong of Disney. They're in the wrong.

Agreed. Stupid decision. Bryan Singer can diddle boys and go on to direct x-men apocalypse. James gunn tweets a joke about the same, goes on to direct two gotg films, and then gets fired.

Smooth move disney.

Has anyone seen Super? Gunn literally made a feature length superhero film that included a young girl who rapes a man, and then proceeds to get shot in the head. Apparently that was okay for Disney to be associated with...

this is ****ing absurd.

I think Joss had plenty of loyal fans but Gunn tweeted really inappropriate "jokes" while Joss was all about feminism and that was his brand and it was revealed that he was more of a Parker then a Riley. And it involved someone else (ie: his wife)

That was Fox. This is Disney. Disney potentially have more ethics is a problem? Also, what does Super have to do with his talk of pedophilia on twitter?

The Joss Whedon crap was stupid too.

Twitter is ridiculous. Hyper-sensitive people man...

Because he literally made jokes about rape on the big screen. No one is forced to follow James Gunn on twitter. No one is forced to watch his films.

Disney's ethics aren't in question. Gunn's are. Learn to separate artist from art. Learn to differentiate between witch hunt and goose chase. Firing Gunn is a loss. And IN MY OPINION far worse for Disney's brand than some stupid "offensive" jokes from a decade ago.

Also we all make mistakes sometimes. Nowadays and with social media no-one is safe.
Those in the limelight are easy targets. Not saying that he didn't do a mistake but we all do and hopefully we grow and improve as human beings. Oh well... life goes on.

Gunn's tweets are indefensible. That being said, it's possible he's changed as a person and wouldn't say things like that these days. It's also possible he regretted saying them in the first place.

I like Guardians of the Galaxy a lot and enjoyed the sequel quite a bit, if a bit less. He's a fan of the comic properties and I was really looking forward to his take on Adam Warlock. That being said, this shouldn't be shocking in the slightest. Nor was his firing inappropriate.

:woot:Justice Is Served!

Even as a Marvel fan, I always found Gunn to be a massive a-hole in real life. The guy couldn’t stay off Twitter and couldn’t keep his foot out of his mouth. Gunn has always been a divisive hate monger and always seemed to be way more than a few cents short of a dollar. These new revelations expose him to be even worse than I realized. Honestly, this is wonderful news and makes me feel better about Disney and mankind in general. Good riddance.

For me, this sucks creatively but Disney is not wrong. Disney needs to protect their image, and this controversy risked that. Gunn also made these tweets well before he ever was mainstream. But, that said...he posted them on Twitter and left them there. It was stupid to make those comments in the first place, and it was even more stupid to leave them there well after you know you were a public figure. Again, creatively I am very disappointed. Guardians Vol 2 is a top 5 MCU movie for me. The Guardians series is only behind the Cap and Avengers for me in enjoyment level. I wanted to see his 3rd film. So creatively, this hurts. But I get it and I can't be mad at anyone over it.

That said, I hope Taika takes over. Thor: Ragnarok was like a 3rd Guardians film. They have the same creative DNA. I think if he did it, they wouldn't lose a beat.

Has anyone seen THE COLOR PURPLE? Steven Spielberg made a movie about a woman who was raped and beaten by her husband for years.....but all studios are ok with that. Because....besides being a fantastic movie....Spielberg hasn't had to delete 10,000 tweets about pedophilia.

It's not the movies you make.....it's what you do in your off time.

I don't understand how some of y'all don't get that saying weirdo stuff can get you fired from your job. Whether tha job is being a Hollywood director or a small time office worker

Social Media training definitely needs to be a thing in todays world, probably high school.

there's a difference between saying it while you're being employed and saying it to be an edgy fool like he was doing back in 2010/11. which he did apologize for in 2012

and if anybody has been following his twitter/social media since gotg, can obviously see that he's a good person and that was just being provocative for the sake of being edgy

disney knew this. they only cut him loose when it became more known now. which is still stupid because the person who brought it up actually bragged about sexual assault and had an axe to grind with gunn because he calls out their side politically and disagrees with them.

for lack of a better metaphor they jumped the gun on this

I agree. That being said, I actually lost more respect for Gunn trying to delete those tweets then for the content contained within them. I know they were jokes (however distasteful some may have been) and he should have owned them, not try and delete them to avoid the wrath of the faceless twitter mob. He just made himself look worse.

You hold your president to the same standard? No? Didn't think so.

Yeah....if you watch or read the news....you will see stories every week of someone losing their job for posting something stupid on social media.

In another thread, someone posted an older video of Will Smith on a talk show....he's talking about how he did all kinds of stupid **** as a younger person....but none of it was on social media. people today forget that....if you don't want something to come back and bite you in the butt....don't post it.

gunn is in a catch-22 in that situation. if he doesn't delete, it can be weaponized against him and they can say he is condoning it b/c he didn't delete them. if he does delete, it can be weaponized against him and they can say he's trying to cover it up. it's a lose-lose situation.

his only mistake was not deleting it way back in the day once he became big
