Jason Statham to take on Meg

Wow I actually enjoyed it. It wasn’t one of those dumb too self-aware movies that thinks it’s clever by being in on the joke. It played it fairly serious but knew one to lighten the mood.

I think what helped was that it was like 3 movies in one. The first act was the rescue, then the first Meg, and then the second Meg. So it never felt like one story dragged on for too long.

The integration with the Chinese audience felt natural and not pandering like other movies that want that China box office.

Saw this the other day and thought it was ok for what it was—entertaining and a lot of fun, but it wasn't as edgy as it could've been. Really would've benefited from an R rating IMO, like others have said. Especially in the last act when the shark was

eating all those people just off the beach—that was sooo tame compared to the similar scene in Piranha 3D when people were getting limbs cut off and even torn in half. The only hint that people even got eaten by the shark was the quick shot of dead bodies stuck in its mouth, but even that was so brief it was practically blink-and-you-miss-it.

Also I usually like Jason Statham, but he just felt off in this movie. Definitely would've worked better with a more charismatic lead.

I can tell you from first hand experience that the PG-13 rating is the reason it grossed as well as it did. When I saw the film, a teacher came in with a classroom of 40 students. A lot of parents with their kids too. The filmmakers definitely knew what they were doing. A family friendly shark movie pretty much. A lot of them liked it too based on the cheers at the end when the shark is killed.

My personal opinion is "Why does any other shark movie exist after Jaws" That includes the sequels too. Normally, I don't ascribe to the be-all-end-all nonsense, but in the case of shark movies, I have yet to see any that are actually good besides Spielberg's film.

I have no doubt the PG-13 helped sell tickets, but IMO that hurt the quality of the movie. I don't know about you, but when I go see a shark movie, I want to see the shark hunting, attacking, and/or eating people. Heck, the shark in Jaws did that too, and that movie was actually pretty intense back in the day (with a PG rating no less). This movie had suspense sure, and did a lot to make the shark look scary, but there was barely anything in the way of letting the shark actually attack & eat people. Heck, even the original Jaws did that in its first 5 minutes.

IMO, family-friendly and shark movie don't belong in the same sentence unless it's a nature documentary or a Disney movie.

Jaws has quality acting and a decent story, the Meg has none, the performance of the Asian girl alone warrants all the rotten tomatoes in the world.

Completely different tone to Jaws but it wasn't a bad shark movie... the sequel though was awful.

Just gave this a watch expecting something fun but it turned out to be one of the worst movies of 2018. I hated it. And the lead actress Bingbing was awful. I know English isn’t her first language and all, but even her facial expressions were off. The kid was a better actor. And Jason Statham was written as the perfect human being. Boring.

The Meg herself was more like a cameo. Instead we’re stuck with characters we don’t give a crap about.

So much potential, just wasted.
