Jason Statham to take on Meg

Yeah, the Shallows has that Jaws level of craftsmanship.

I liked The Shallows.
I wouldn’t go to The Meg if you paid me to.

Ok, I wouldn’t pay you to see a film you didn’t want to anyway haha. You don’t wanna see it that’s fine with me. I’ll go myself for some dumb shark fun :woot:

The Meg did 16.5m on OD which pretty much locks an opening of 40m. It beats the avg. tracking figures by a whopping 81%.

WB cooked up a brilliant marketing campaign and used the huge monster gimmick expertly. BTDubz where are you, DarkKnight88??

I really wish it had been bloodier. It's crying out to be a bloody mess of a movie. And how was there not ever a shot from inside the Meg's throat? Like a throat POV shot.

The Shallows and The Meg have basically nothing in common other than it has a shark in it.

The shark is kind of a big component of both films though. I mean, if you took it out it’s not like the films wouldn’t change

It was as ridiculous as I'd hoped to be, without going down the satire route. I had fun.

And Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery and Skyfall are both about English secret agents but... ya'know...

I already admitted I'm surprised as hell. Congrats on its 44.5M opening.

Looking forward to The Meg: Uprising. And for God's sake, for the sequel open with a T-Rex getting eaten in the water like the book. Perfect opening.

Gravity and Lost in Space are both about people marooned in space. Neither are alike.

Haha. I was just messing around. :D :D

I'm frankly shocked. The Meg beat the tracking by 125%. That's kkrazzy good. Gotta hand it to the folks over at the marketing dept at WB. Great job by them.

I just came back from seeing it and it was what I expected. There were a few bits I thought were contrived and a few really well executed scenes but overall nothing out of expectation. It was decent for what it was.

The only surprising part was how they left the ending without an obvious set up to a sequel. I was expecting them to do some kind of teaser for one.

Looks like the weekend over performed big time.

After all the sites predicting a $16m-$20m OW it had that $16.6m opening day and the predictions were $39m-$40m OW. Now it appears to have had a much stronger Saturday hold than expected and the official OW estimate is now $44.5m.

I liked it well enough and am happy to see a good opening, but it really should have had more blood and gore. No need to go over the top with it, but as has been mentioned, it's a giant freaking shark eating people, we should see a wee bit more than a little red stained water.

Luckily, the author of the original novel wrote several sequels so if WB wants to, they can pick and choose which of the books to adapt for Meg 2.

I've read all but the latest one which he hasn't released in paperback yet so I know exactly where he could go with them. :)

It's official, North Americans are MEG-ALOMANIACS.

Tbh, the whole world chipped in very nicely for a 146.8m WW OW. So we're all MEG-ALOMANIACS.

I am glad to see this doing so well only because I do want to see more big budget creature features on the big screen that aren't already apart of a popular, established brand like Jurassic Park, King Kong or Godzilla. That being said if they do decide to do a sequel I really hope they go for an R-rating or at least amp up the kills in some kind of creative way, because this movie was seriously lacking in that area.

If this film opened as well as it did with a PG-13, they sure as hell won't release the sequel with an R-rating.
Only two "sequels" that I know of went from PG-13 to R. One was Logan, successfully, and the other was Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, unsuccessfully.

But yeah, kudos to the marketing team. Wonder if it'll drop like hell its second weekend with tepid reactions? Guess it doesn't really matter anymore. Sequel is probably all but guaranteed. Just don't make a Pacific Rim: Uprising mistake by going smaller.

Id rather watch Fantastic Four than this movie. This was just a mess. What a waste, How did this just not get put on the SYFY channel?

I knew what to expect from this and got what I wanted out of it. I had fun. Was it a good movie? Not necessarily but I think it accomplished what it set out to do

The movie is going to be on a episode of the podcast How Did This Get Made? in a few weeks.

I saw it today and really ejoyed, it was exactly what I hoped it would be. :D

The story is simple, the setting perfect, the characters are a likable(bar one), solid bunch of genre favourites, and the set pieces are paced out and well executed.

The film uses it's budget well, saving the biggest Shark shots for a couple of big moneyshots including the cool finale one, and editing well around more close ups of the upper half of the Shark for the most part.

The finale makes good use of the awesome one man subs that I can't remember the name of and I loved the sequence where Jonas swims out to tag the Meg, but the best sequence is the one on this poster where Suyin goes down in the high-tech Shark cage to kill it.

All in all it delivered on it's premise for me and was a lot of fun.

8/10

I just caught this one today and thought it was pretty good. Better than I was expecting honestly. 7.5/10
