Jason Statham to take on Meg

If this movie was coming out in the 1990s, that might've made it feasible. At least post-Twister.

If this movie finally starts filming I will believe its finally getting made. There is something that always seems to have this movie snake bit.
Naming a director & casting Statham is very good news.
But for 20 yrs. this never being completed makes me think otherwise.

All I remember was it came out in 1997. I can't say for sure if it was on National best seller list. I do remember it did get some word of mouth.

It was popular but I don't think it was hugely popular. Obviously it got enough buzz they wanted to make it into a movie though not enough to accomplish it for going on 20 years.

Alten has a good story in there. Even the sequels, minus a weird turn or two are decent enough if they want to make a franchise out of it, which these days they seem to want ready made sequels to go so this has that.

I'm sure if it gets made and if its decent , then a sequel will be a given since there are other books in the series.

Alten did write a good novel, but the premise has basically become SyFy b-movie fodder at this point.

This has to be a really cool and slick execution. This shark will have to look really cool to elevate this picture.

I'm not expecting this will be successful enough to get a sequel, but who knows. Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars and got a sequel.

The sequels seem to have a lot of silly weird stuff in them.

I agree the shark will have to look real, menacing & believable.
If it looks like a cartoon or even some scenes of Jaws when the shark was out of the water and at its most unrealistic , this will make for a bad movie.

Ideally, I would try to get WETA or ILM A-teams to do the shark.

Yeah, they can't just pull a Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows. The thing has to basically be Godzilla in the water.

Why do i suddenly get the idea that this might be our alternative to a third Crank movie? Cmon guys, it's Chev Chillios vs A GIAGANTIC MONSTER SHARK! If this movie isn't all kinds of bad-ass during the big showdown at the end, I'll eat my left shoe!

And ideally, make it a bit more different than just a big great white.

If they made it just a little more menacing then a normal Great white , I think that would be fine.
Making it glow might be a little cartoony looking.
If you change its look too much & make it look a monster fish, thats going to come off to weird also.

I remember at one time they were considering Patrick Stewart for the scientist role.

Ruby Rose joins Jason Statham in giant shark thriller Meg

According to The Hollywood Reporter, rising star Ruby Rose (“Orange Is the New Black,” xXx: The Return of Xander Cage) is the latest to join the cast of Warner Bros. Pictures‘ prehistoric shark movie, Meg. She’ll star opposite the already-attached Jason Statham, Fan Bingbing and Jessica McNamee.

Based on Steve Alten‘s New York Times best-selling novel, the prehistoric shark movie will be directed by National Treasure‘s Jon Turteltaub from a script by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man, Independence Day: Resurgence). Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Colin Wilson will produce the film for Warner Bros.
On his official site, Alten describes his 1997 novel as follows:
On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds.
Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub.
Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.
Ruby Rose has already filmed roles in the action movies Resident Evil: The Final Chapter with Milla Jovovich and John Wick: Chapter Two alongside Keanu Reeves.
Meg is slated to open in theaters on March 2, 2018.

I want a scene where Statham makes a threatening call to the shark on his cellphone.

"Wan'cha to meet me two mates....thunda and lightning. And they come out rain or shine."

Is Statham going to be believable as a marine scientist?

About as believable as Chris Hemsworth was as a hacker in Blackhat.
