Jason Statham to take on Meg

I was watching a doco last night on sea monsters (it was awesome), anyway they said whale sharks are as large as sea animals with cartilage can get because to get bigger you need a bone structure like a blue whale. No idea what megalodon had but it would be fun if it’s bone structure was so strong it could, like withstand missile attacks and stuff lol

This movie checks all my boxes:

Jason Statham, check
Sharks, check
Dumb title, check
Made principally for Chinese audiences, check

Is it so much to ask that I want to see some shots of a silhouetted Meg in a giant wave and jumping out and swallowing a hapless surfer whole?

I'm sure that'll be in this movie, although we already have the mosasaur doing it in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Being a shark, a megalodon would definitely have a cartilaginous skeletal structure; it's part of why virtually no post-cranial remains are actually known from the animal, iconic as it is. It pretty much just preserves teeth (which are hardened by their enamel) and there might be a jaw and/or skull with a few vertebrae attached. Missile attacks... Well... We'll see, I guess. :funny:

Seriously. Seriously?! The pandering is off the charts. They might as well just have the last scene be the shark hop on mainland China.

I just want to hear Stath recite a heroic speech in Mandarin without changing his accent.

Guys, The Meg is a proper US-China co-production.

The movie is being produced by Warner Bros (US) & Flagship Entertainment and Gravity Pictures in association with Beijing Digital Impression Film (China).

Eh the later trailers make it look like more of a B action movie.

I kind of want more menace and terror out of Meg.

I think this will go the way of Snakes on a Plane or Piranha 3d. A lot of hype over how cheesy and fun it looks but won’t translate into actual box office.

God I cannot wait for this. When it makes six billion dollars in its first day they should green light a sequel where the meg has a nemesis in the form of a leviathan melvillei

This is one of those movies where you don't know if they're going for scary or going for laughs. The marketing is pointing to laughs and that's usually never an easy sell for something also "scary".

I like the billboards, but are we actually going to get that kind of terror in the films? Or is it going to be nothing more than a cheeky goofy action movie starring Jason Statham?

Not really. This is one of those movies that isn’t really taking itself seriously. I think they know what they’re trying to convey.

It's probably will have trademark dark humor and what not regarding the kills. It feels like a B-movie that's self aware.

And when's the last time a "scary" funny movie sold at the box office?

I really don’t think it will be a horror film. I mean, the Tagline is “pleased to eat you”.

It’ll just be a silly monster mash which is great. It’s good to have fun

Going off the trailers I think there will be a fair amount of shark-chomps to sate those wanting to see them, but there will be fair bit of monster-movie cheese too. Question is, will they get the balance right?

Looks like this should be on sci fi. Deep blue sea looks to have been taken itself more serious.

It'll probably make its money. People like this stuff, as JW proved.

Honestly, I'd rather see them cross over with Jurassic World and have the megalodon fight the giant mosasaur that's now roaming loose.

(Also, the sense of scale in that artwork is completely misleading. That baleen whale is only about 20 feet long, not blue whale-sized.)
