So, now Greg Berlanti is producing a Green Lantern series for HBO Max, so what is JJ Abrams doing for DC ?
I hope Abrams is part of the theatrical film division, while Berlanti does TV.
Although, there's nothing definitive here, but this Variety article says:
"Disney’s rivals aren’t as firm in their plans, but they’re beginning to move aggressively. HBO Max is expected to lean heavily on Warner Bros. to supply it with exclusive content. The subscription service hopes the studio will provide it with eight to 10 movies, a number that could ramp up over time. Certain films could be produced or overseen by the likes of Abrams and Greg Berlanti, two prominent creative forces with overall deals on the lot. Some of these productions could be tentpole-sized, with healthy budgets that could rival those of major feature films. Eventually productions will likely hail from the DC Universe, WarnerMedia’s in-house comic book division, as it looks for compelling content. The studio was successful in convincing Melissa McCarthy to release her upcoming comedy “Superintelligence” on the service, and other feature projects could follow suit."
So if HBO Max want big movies for their streaming, some of them could be overseen by Abrams and Berlanti. Some of them could be DC movies. But it's not certain whether it will be Abrams or Berlanti spearheading these DC movies for HBO Max or it will be other kinds of movies.
Part of me wants Disney to buy DC, but then we’d never get stuff like TDKT or Joker
Disney has stated theyre willing to do more adult content going forward though.
HBO already has 30 million subscribers. Their plan is to expand on the number of subscribers they already have. So this idea that they would have to somehow catchup is just completely misinformed.Warner continues to be a massively stupid company. Many people have been clamoring for them to get their house in order for years(going back to the mid 2000s). Instead, they've let every one of their multi-media entities act independent of one another. They should have had DC toons on Cartoon Network, HBO should have been producing premium DC series. Warner Films should have been producing films based on DC heroes besides Batman/Superman. Instead, they went with a failed DC-only app for years and a separate HBO service that wasted hundreds of millions on failed tv shows like Vinyl. It's only NOW after Disney's streaming service that they've decided to realize the potential of leveraging all their assets. But it's too late I think as Disney/Marvel have too much mindshare. Everybody else that isn't into the Disney family dreck has Netflix. That leaves the WB/HBO service dead in the water I think.
I always wondered why HBO was not doing anything related to DC, we should have got shows like Swamp thing, Constantine, Superman & Lois on HBO instead of CW / DC Universe app.I'm pretty sure Richard Plepler had little interest in producing DC content for HBO during his reign, and the silo set-up at Warner he liked just fine. The greater synergy across the company didn't happen until the AT&T merger was final. Plepler hates synergy, which is why he left when the new owners took control.
HBO currently has 34 million subs. Even if half of those move over to HBO Max for the same price, we're talking 15 -20 million subs right off the hop. Nice head start for a new service.
I hopeWould love to have Abrams direct Superman. He's not the best director overall but the best director for Superman at this moment in time.
