Comics JMS off Amazing

However, it doesn't matter that it's good, cause Sins Past and The Other was so bad, the rest of JMS' run needs to be spit on too.

Six years of writing Amazing Spider-Man and the guy writes two really bad storylines so that automatically makes the rest of it caused to be spit on?

Um, no. Take away Sins Past and The Other JMS is probably one of the best Spider-Man writers. His totem arc, without The Other, is probably one of my favorite Spider-Man stories. But I'm also a guy who highly enjoyed the Clone Saga...so, my tastes are different.

And we shouldn't forget it was Joe Q's idea that Peter shouldn't be the father of Gwen's kids and it was Joe Q's idea for The Other to be 12 issues long.

I was never a big fan of this JMS's stuff from the start. I had an open mind, and really thought he could do some good stuff. But his writing never felt very well thought out, or it was just plain silly. (ie: That Tailor story drove me nuts) The other thing I didn't like, was his characterization of Peter, some people say how great it was, but I strongly disagree. I think he makes him too funny. Everything he says, practically, has to be some dumb wisecrack. The interesting dichotomy between Peter & Spidey, is that Spidey is the wisecracker and Peter's more reserved, not saying Peter can't be funny, just not every line out of his mouth be some annoying banter. I don't subscribe to the old *condescending voice* " Well, he's matured, and he's a different person than he was when he started. *end condescending voice* Uh uh..these characters are who they are, and have to be adhered to in the way they were created. It's been done for 40+ years, so there's no reason to change now. No one wants to see Charlie Brown as a teenager.:whatever:
Of course...this is all...just my opinion.:yay:

So, to sum up nearly this whole thread, Sins Past and the Other = Bad, the rest of JMS' run = good. However, it doesn't matter that it's good, cause Sins Past and The Other was so bad, the rest of JMS' run needs to be spit on too.

Close thread.

Based on what 'boss'? One of those two stories, the totem **** dominated his entire run... 'the rest' ain't much and it certainly wasn't all good.

I loved the classic 500 issue with adverts for some nothing miniseries, oh and Uncle Ben in a magic box... awesome. Oh and his buddy he beat up in school to look cool coming back to burn stuff, genius. Which of course reminds us of all the original characters he has given us, vampire dude, octopus dude, hulk dude, molten dude, goblin dude, the totally new and original guy with spider powers just like Pete's... I mean its a never ending list of originality and genius. I for one am enriched.

Lets not forget the touching moments either, Dr Doom crying over dead people. Spider-Man struggling, for 2 seconds, to come to terms with Gwen and MJ's utter betrayal. His death, heart wrenching. It was also quite the feat to keep ramping up spider-man's powers yet at the same time make him lose more and more to lesser foes. Ah, and those powers eh... talking to insects... thats been a huge influence on Spidey. I hear there will be a spin off movie franchise with Spidey traveling the world talking to Spiders and getting them to do all his thinking for him.

I was a major JMS fan, his start of the run was dodgey and got worse as it went on. Everything seemed to be either out of character, contradict past events or involve some magic or deus ex machina. But yeah, failing basic writing standards and pointing out the fact makes one an emo... :huh: Spider-Man has been a weak, whining, toe the line, idiot for what seems a lifetime at this point. He's been a dullard at the best of times. Even if you happen to like idiocy underlining the character, its is not the character, it is at fault and is therefore wrong. You may like him being ******ed but the character's intelligence is already established and stated as intelligent, so any contradiction to that is wrong no matter how 'good'.

kainedamo - Utter BS, at the time JMS was defending that ***** to the hilt. He was pissing on people from above saying how he had done his homework and it was perfectly acceptable for Gwen to drop knickers for 'charisma'. Only once everyone had basically pointed out he was a hack did it amazingly all become Joe Q's idea, some homework. And what sodding homework do you need to do for Spidey in that instance, why is he on the title if he has no clue about the whole Gwen not being a **** for idiotic plot devices.

God, Marc...I want to have your babies. You said it all perfectly.

Hell, even I was a JMS supporter in the beginning there.

According to a poster over at Newsarama the new Wizard states that JMS is off Spider-Man after this summer.

Does anyone have the new Wizard to confrim this? Also could this be Loeb and Campbell's Spider-Man project?

I hope this is true and if so, its about time. I've never really liked JMS. Can someone at Marvel demote quesada while they're at it.

And.....now we can close the thread! :woot:

It's good to know I wasn't the only one who thought the 500th issue wasn't fitting for the series. I liked his stuff at first, too, but his "original villians" can be pretty much broken down and shown as copycats:

Morlun=Morbius
Shade=Shadowcat+Mordo
Digger=Hammerhead+Hulk
Shathra=Female Symbiote Chick from Lethal Protector in black
Bad guy from Skin Deep= Molten Man

Also, Marc is dead on about one of my big problems with "Sins Past"....MJ keeping a secret like that from Peter. Wow....marriage....all about honesty....and she keeps something THAT big form him? And then he just forgives her and Gwen for being a liar and a **** (respectively)?

Sorry, but there should have been at least a verbal fight between the two followed by a few moments of them having nothign to say to each other. Damn.

This post is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

Well said :up:

I still can't believe you people think Gwen's a ****. I don't like her very much, but I still wouldn't go that far.

I hate to call anyone a ****, as it's just a rude thing to call somone. That being said, any woman who cheats on her boyfriend with a guy twice her age, gets knocked up, has his babies, and LIES to her boyfriend about it all the while hiding her pregnancy and the children from him....well, that's kind of the very definition of a "****".

Gwen isn't a ****, I can respect a ****......banging your boyfriend's best friend's Father goes far beyond that......it was Jerry Springer bad!
!

*sigh* **** - A woman who has sex with MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE. For that, wou can also use the term "****e."

Who's to say that she didn't? The fact that Sins Past happened off-panel 400 or so issues prior to when it was revealed means that Gwen could have had MANY chance encounters with many men and fallen into their "darkness" all the time. For all we know, She could have been trying to start a supervillian baby brothel or something.

That's the problem with allowing writers to go back into the past and change key points to a character. They change one thing, then the next thing you know, Gwen is waiting for the check on the first and the fifteenth and wondering when the Shocker is going to "claim these kids".

Exactly. If one can sleep with Osborn they can sleep with anyone.

I hate to say this, but we know she didn't sleep around like that. The (god, I can't believe i'm about to say this:cmad:) the Gwen I knew would never do that to him... I'm glad they did SOMETHING to make her character less perfect, but anymore cheating would be going to far. It'd be like saying MJ cheated on Peter, and We know that will never happen... ... unless marvel really wants to break up the marriage.... And I think they may do that one day.

JMS was a hack from basically the start on Spider-Man. He did not understand the character and showed little in the way of Originality and again, Mackie at least respected the character and the past.

Now I will definitely come back to Spider-Man comics, but I would be most happy if the new writers re-write the improbable ridiculousness JMS brought to Spidey's reality.... Or at least do what JMS did, FORGET what he Wrote, as if he never did, and move far far away from it. It's two wrongs, I know, but by incorporating his c rap , he may as well still be writing his contrived off character bull s *it.

What a hack.

And anyone stupid enough to believe gwen would cheat MORE THAN ONCE (It's perfectly possible to cheat once, no matter how in love someone is) Is like I said, STUPID.

There's a problem in that as everything JMS is not "crap." I really don't care what they take away, as long as a few thing remain the same. 1. Peter being a teacher. 2. Aunt may knowing Peter is Spider-man... that's it, really.

1. Peter becoming a teacher was one huge waste of storyline potential. Besides the 2 or 3 storylines that actually involved teaching and students, what exactly has his new job done for the character? NOTHING. There have been no supporting characters spun out of the storyline, there have been no memorable arcs spun out of the storyline. And the fact that he even still teaches after being unmasked is complete and utter BS!!!! Peter never should have been a teacher. If anything, he should have become a scientist. He's a genius with the potential to become ALMOST on par with Reed Richards... yet they wasted it by making him a teacher that is always late for class and now puts CHILDREN'S lives in danger. So much for responsibility.

2. Yeah, that was great, I did enjoy that. But I would have enjoyed it even more had May stayed dead back in #400.

See, the Gwen I knew would have never cheated on Peter Parker in the first place.

Personally, I would have rather seen her past BEFORE she met Peter and the gang. That would ahve been far more interesting. They could have made her a drunk, a heroine addict, or even simply a manic depressant who finally came to terms with her problem and get help to become the brilliant, wonderful person we, and Peter, came to know and love. That would have made her flawed, but it would have also made her story that of triumph, and it would have given us an explanation for her always being the good girl.

Just my opinion, but a story like that would have been much better than "Sins Past".
