I mean it more as unexpected rather than odd. Ledger wasn't someone most people where thinking of when casting the joker

Yeah ... Paul Bettany, Crispin Glover, and that Lachy Hulme guy were some of the names I can recall that apparently alot had in mind at the time.

What was initially so odd about Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker?

For one, Ledger had kind of disparaged comic films and franchises in general in the past (He was offered Spider-Man before Tobey Maguire and turned it down flat, saying he didn't read comics as a kid and had no interest.). The perception was he would never do that type of film.

Two, Lachy Hulme and Paul Bettany were rumored for months to be the two candidates left standing for Joker. The Hulme rumor in particular was strengthened by him coming out of the WBs offices with BB/TDK producers. Turned out the meeting was for another film.

But that still doesn't tell me what was so odd about it? Since Batman Begins, actors have just been looking at it more as just a film than a comic book movie.

This was the guy from Ten Things I Hate about You, A Knight's Tale, and Brokeback Mountain. Just wasn't Joker material from that standpoint. Plus we were all assuming they'd choose someone lanky and wiry to play Joker, not somewhat built.

I still wonder if Gordon-Levitt will be in costume for the sequels? We won't see his face in the second or third film, so it could be some stuntman filling in for him.

I was just thinking, what would be the point of Gordon-Levitt coming back only to not be seen? As far as I know, CC will be wearing a mask at the end of the first movie right? I imagine he'll be wearing it in the sequels unless we do see his scarred face in future films.

I don't know, just a thought.
