Judge Dredd Reboot!!

Even though people consider the B.O important I do not. I find that if the movie is good and it has quality, is much better than winning much more money. Just my opinion the movie companies probably highly disagree with me.

^^I don't B.O is the most important thing either. The basic point that I was making to The Vile One is that the fact that Karl Urban having done 2 lackluster films where he was the leading role, doesn't automatically mean that it will spell "disaster" to "Dredd", critically or financially.

Actually Batman & Robin DID affect Batman Begins.

Batman Begins, hardly lite the BO on fire at first, and started very slowly. But it had great word of mouth, and reviews and began to pick up steam slowly and continued to play for months.

Batman Begins, was a success because it was a great film that got great reviews - and word spread.

Are those stills from the previous page from the fan film? They really look great - far better than the multimillion dollar production we'd all like to forget ever happened.

Its not about spelling disaster. Its more that Karl Urban doesn't draw audiences to movies based on his name value alone. So basically the movie has a challenge in that you don't have like a big star playing the character that will make the movie more attractive to material that by itself doesn't really draw in viewers.

I guess I meant to say that it did not affect it "in the long run". This new Judge Dredd film will obviously, like "Batman Begins", have to rely on positive word of mouth and good reviews. The script has so far been positively greeted by alot of the Dredd fanbase.

Well, I don't know about "material that by itself doesn't really draw in viewers." We will see about this eventually. Just remember that "300", "Hellboy", "Underworld", and "District 9" didn't have stars either.

None of those are really relevant examples. Dredd isn't going to be District 9.

You can name all the obscure movies you want but for every Underworld there's a Queen of The Damned or Dracula 2000. For every Matrix there are a dozen or so imitators.

Dredd had a movie before and it was a tremendous flop. The source material and character isn't as well known or popular in the US as Spider-man, Superman, Batman etc.

Just saying they need to be smart and careful in how they are going to present and promote this character.

Also the way the movie is being financed I hope this doesn't end up being some bargin bin B-movie like the new Street Fighter flick.

Actually they are quite relevant to the subject you brought. They are movies that sold by their content rather than star-power. Hopefully, "Dredd" will go that route.

I'm not predicting anything. I'm just as open to the idea that this film could tank as much as draw in, even if it is good. Look at "Scott Pilgrim".

So, I pretty much agree with you with Stallone's film being an obstacle and that they need to be prudent in how they promote this.

What I don't agree with you is the notion that because Urban not being a superstar or the source material not being popular in the U.S(I already stated examples that I think dismiss this) will make this film unappealing to viewers. But oh well...

I'm personally enthusiastic because the people working on this project are the same people behind such acclaimed films like "District 9", "Sunshine", and "28 Days Later". We have a potential director in Pete Travis(Vantage Point) and Dredd co-creator, John Wagner, is working closely in the film.

I wish Dredd was bigger here in the US. Is it still ongoing? And how does its publisher fair against the usual Marvel and DC books over there?

Remember the success of Blade? That certainly wasnt because the GA knew all about the character or because of the draw of Wesley Snipes (he wasnt exactly a massive B.O. draw at the time, was he?) - it was because the trailers looked cool, showing an interesting high-concept premise which also promised to deliver hardcore R-rated action.

Dont see why Dredd is so different. As long as the trailers are badass, it will find its audience.

I'll also add that with a character such as Dredd, Urban also has the chance to carve out an iconic character much in the same way the Snipes did with Blade - where you kinda just cant imagine anyone else playing the character after you've watched their take on the role; like Eastwood and Dirty Harry (which is ironic given the influence Dirty Harry had on the creators of Dredd when they created him).

Finally, a couple of days back, Dredd scored a handful of pre-sale distribution deals, to the tune of $30m. And by ‘a handful’ I mean the picture has been sold in just about every territory other than the US. That goes a long way towards fully financing the picture, which begins shooting in November in South Africa.

Dredd is the new take on the classic British comic book series Judge Dredd. Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby will star. [Variety]

 Good stuff, how did I know the US would be the last to pick it up though :whatever:.

Looking forward to Urban's portayal; although as a fan of Burn Notice, I couldnt help noticing just how much Jeffrey Donovan has Brian Bolland and Cliff Robinson's side profile Dredd chin when he's pissed off.

If something happens and Urban drops out.....................

I'm not encouraged by the script reviews I've read so far. Basically sounds like Legend of Chun-Li meets Judge Dredd.

The script is out there and not hard to find. I wonder if I should read it or not.

man i hope not.if its anything like legend I will be so saddened

^Basing the movie on a Die Hard type situation is no bad thing if you ask me, it is one of the greatest action movies of all time and if the new Dredd movie can be half as good as the first DH i'll be happy.
