Judge Dredd Reboot!!

I've been thinking of something regarding the trucks; in the early comics, The Justice Dept. covered many other departments including the police. The Judges were an elite force who stepped in when the cops couldn't cut it.The trucks could belong to the "regular" police.

It's a theory.

If I remember right the idea there were 'normal' police in MC1 was only very early on. Might even have only been in the first 'Whitey' story (that was the only time I remember seeing that). Whatever the case the writers ditched that idea fast leaving the Judges to run pretty much everything.

I guess that might be going that route in this movie though, having the Judges be an upper tier force (kinda like the US Marshalls) with things like routine policing, emergency services etc, as more localised separate groups.

Thats actually a good theory Rogue.

Context is important of pictures IMHO, but I mean Dredd's uniform just looks too bulky and clunky IMHO. The helmet looks way too oversized. Where's the eagle shoulder pad?

The cars look just like regular cars.

I hope MC1 does look like MC1 at least.

I'm just not inspired when the production designer is like "budget guys."

Exactly.

To be brutally honest, if it was between finally getting it up there on screen but not featuring many of the staples which make the comicbook so great visually or not doing the movie at all, I'd opt for not doing it all.

Can't they cut a deal to use some of the VFX and props from the Stallone effort? ;) I mean, that's one thing they got right inm 1995. Hell, even the Kurt Russel starrer 'Soldier' in 1998 had more 2000AD inspired vehicles (armor, big-ass tyres) than this new movie looks to have thus far, maybe they should go take a look there.

I'm still going to see the movie, but the prospect of a Judge Dredd/Mega-City-One-lite (visually speaking, at least) doesnt exactly get my juices flowing. :csad:

No pun intended here - but at least do the character's world justice.

I'm fine with visuals juicing things up in post and all but it looks like they want things to basically look like an extension hyper-realistic present day.

I kind of get it, but I mean . . . that worked for District 9, but this isn't District 9.

I'm inclined to agree with Brian.

Maybe so, but to what extent? Rogue, remember this?

John Wagner recently said the following regarding Dredd's uniform on Facebook: "(The filmmaker's) uniform was more paramilitary in style. I urged them to move it back towards the uniform we know and I think they took that on board, but I haven't seen the final version."

Paramilitary. I'm guessing Judge Dredd might be sporting a Solid Snake or Halo-type of look, while maintining certain classic elements like the elbow and kneepads, and the badge with the chain.

What worries me about that is the fact that Wagner had to urge them to go with something more akin to the comics.

If we have a creator who has already had to 'urge' the people in charge of production to craft a uniform more akin to the comics and now we are seeing vehicles that look like they have come on loan from OCP as opposed to the Mega City Justice Department, I have to admit that I'm starting to get a little fearful for the unique aesthetic that the world of JD brings (and the prodcutions regard as to the importance of that aesthetic).

Its fine if its smaller, but why is the helmet so oversized?

....I guess it's a camera thing, since the conceptual designer stated that standing close to Urban it doesn't look as big as it does in the picture.

Let's hope that was a one off shot then. Not much good it looking smaller in real life if remains looking oversized like that on film.

I'm thinking the same. I had Initial concerns with the story being basically nothing that they could have adapted from the books (over 30 years of stories with many unique ideas to choose from and they come up with their own) and the pics so far don't fill me with confidence the film makers have the desire, or the means as the case may be, to bring MC1 to life as we might like.

Having said that though 'budget' is no excuse for just up and doing their own thing with the uniform to such an extent the creator urged them to go closer to the books. How much they have acted on that I don't know (the design of the helmet is obviously very close), but they clearly still have a hard on for the military body armor look (like we have not seen all that several times before).

Oh well, if we can't have the vast cityscapes, flying futuristic vehicles and 500mph roadway uber-juggernauts, maybe they will at least extend some of their budget bringing some of MC1's weird and bizarre to life (would love to see the 'Fatties' complete with belly wheels, or Otto Sump's Ugly clinics, or 'Boing' perhaps...a nod to 'Resyk' would be neat too)

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the story just take place in a skyscraper? Granted, it's a huge skyscraper with it's own society and what not, but that was my biggest concerns. It feels small and the villains were all made up (like the Ghost Rider sequel), even compared to the original Stallone film.

Whatever anyone may think of the suit, John Wagner already stated that he's happy with it.

I've only read a synopsis of the script but afaik most of the film will take place in the 'Peach Trees' block (the interior of which does not look anything special going by the pic of Urban). Apart from coming up with their own story, their own plot device (the 'slo-mo' drug) and their own villain, that's another little faux pas there...MC'1s blocks are mostly named after old time celebrities. Dredd's home block was an exception in that it was named after a tv show character, Rowdy Yates (an obvious nod to Clint Eastwood).
Was it too hard for the writer think of one or did they just not get that?

Anyway's, from what I've read there is apparently a good action scene on the roads (Dredd in action on his Lawmaster) before the film goes all indoors on us.

I've always questioned film adaptations when they make things up while the source material had tons of stories to work from; it doesn't have to be based but at least be inspired by. Look at Nolan's Batman: they were all influenced by a good number of stories.

It reminds me of how Superman later turned out with the sequels and Singer's 'Returns' film.

You can do original stuff only if you have a great creative team behind it. Like Blade and Hellboy 2..

Actually, as Karl Urban stated, it's not based on any one comic, there will be elements from different stories. Much like Nolan's Batman films, which had a bit from different stories like Long Halloween, Killing Joke, and Year One.

I feel like it's gonna be like how the new Conan the Barbarian is..

I have a feeling this will end up being only "meh okay"...

Right now, with the Conan film, I'm in a neutral position. I like the still pictures that I've seen so far and Momoa looks excellent, but I'm still a little concerned if the script will make justice, to a certain degree, to the spirit of Howard. The trailer might be the answer.

However, the difference between Nispel's Conan film and "Dredd", is that the core fanbase of Judge Dredd(found in the 2000ad boards) is actually quite pleased and optimistic with what they're seeing so far, whereas with "Conan The Barbarian", the Howard fandom still has a strong mixed reaction so far.

i just want it to do well so i can see the dark judges in a sequal

that and if this does well maybe we'll get stuff like rouge trooper and the superb but underrated flesh

It's for that exact reason that I want this to do well so, so much (lord knows I've posted as much many a time).

This is the movie that could get 2000AD films up and running although, based on what we've seen thus far, I fear that we cant rule out Rogue Trooper not being blue or Strontium Dog becoming Strontium Cat as the result of some kind of 'budget restrictions'/'creative reasoning'. :oldrazz:
