Kingsman: The Secret Service

Vaughn is now one of my top favorite directors. The way he captures action and can make stories so silly yet completely satisfying is a true wonder. Loved this film. Had it not played to such an archetypal story I probably would have given it a perfect score.

Here is my review:

Shame he's no longer on Xmen.
Damn shame.

And it got one of the movie's best reactions.

Everyone's being all puritanical and PC about one actress

...The transformers section needs more people like this. Then again, maybe not the less double standards the better.

The difference with Transformers 2 in particular is that it's a movie aimed at kids, but it's one of the most vile, stupid, racist, badly edited (Where did that little robot go?) mean-spirited films I've ever seen. And it was for..kids? Honestly, I would rather watch the Star Wars prequels forever in purgatory then to watch Trans 2 again. Meanwhile, Kingsman is rated R, and doesn't pretend to be something else.

Since you ****ing started this ********....

Not sure why the diatribe is necessary tbh. I'm also sure where I ever said I liked or disliked any of those or these movies. I tend to just address issues where I see them regardless. Let me be Brass tacks about this current issue for you: Objectification of women, unnecessary nudity and crudeness in humor are what they are regardless of whom makes a film, what it's rated or whom it's for. Those things are those things, period! What matters is if you complain about them ad infinitum in one instance and then produces quotes like you did in the next, it just reeks of hypocrisy imo. You see, people who bring up PC issues aren't settling for calling a joke dumb such as the wrecking ball gag, they are aspiring to drag a film through the mud for a more egregious, important and all out hard to justify flaw in film making; that of equal rights and morality and so forth.
But hey, "the films biggest laughs...", who knew that's all that needed be said.

I do enjoy this particular sentiment of a supposed intended audience trumping a film's actual rating. That would be like saying the Xmen films with all it's nudity and cursing and murder or all that ugly Heath Ledger stuff in TDK or things like Blacklight jokes are too much for the kids and thus 'too much' for the PG13 audience the films are actually made for. Then again, maybe it's only Bay's 'kids movies' people bring up this particular issue with, because I've never heard anyone complain about objectification in his R films..or have I.

This movie was awesome. Vaughn has a great track record.

Yeah, I actually have Stardust, Kick Ass and First Class on DVD/Blu-Ray.

I saw Kingsman on Thursday and absolutely loved it. I was very impressed with Colin Firth's action scenes. Very good movie that I hope gets a sequel.

I wish Vaughn would direct a MCU movie. Marvel tried to get him to direct Thor but he backed out. Hopefully they will make another offer to him.

The difference is Vaughn has Jane Goldman and he himself knows a thing or two about writing.

this movie went further than the interview i'd say.
blowing Obama's head off and anal sex with Scandinavian royalty

I'm not going to write a long review nor am I going to take petty pointless shots at other directors because that is not what this thread is about.

I'll just say that I thought the film was tremendously entertaining. Sam Jackson was hilarious and also engaged and he isn't always like that, Colin Firth was awesome and so was Taron Egerton. Vaughn once again shows that he is one of the most interesting and dynamic action directors around. I love the subversive nature of the film. Very, very fine film all around. Did I love the controversial bit at the near the end of the picture? No but it is what it is, a crude gag that I didn't care for, it doesn't ruin the film though.

Rating- Eh let's say an 8.5 with leanings towards a 9/10.

Always thought Kick-Ass was overrated. It's not bad, but IMHO I was never invested in Dave Lizewski. I found him very unlikable.

I disliked Kick-Ass a lot. The movie practically doesn't work for me on any level outside of the direction. I found Kingsman's story, plotting and villain to be 10 times more interesting and it has a much better lead in Taron Egerton.

MODS, would someone please change the thread title already? Please?

I found his flaws and background a lot more interesting. He was a good kid who just had some bad influences, and he wants to do better. Just because you are a delinquent doesn't mean you have to stay a delinquent.

I agree with you completely.

This was indeed a tremendously entertaining film. Seriously, entertaining as f***. Colin Firth, Sam Jackson, and Mark Strong were great. Egerton was no slouch, either. That Church scene was insane from the get-go.

8.5/10

I hope to see this Monday. It sounds like it's in the KILL BILL wheelhouse of being a loving homage but also it's own thing, while also being stylishly hyper violent but all around entertaining. I hope I like it.

I feel like I did Egerton a disservice by not giving him enough credit. I only really mentioned it while talking to you in the other thread. He didn't have to carry the film on his shoulders, but he was the core, and held it all together extremely well imo. If he didn't work, the movie wouldn't have worked. A lot like Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

Dave is quite unlikable imo, but I always saw that as being intentional. He is a mirror for fanboy culture. What we think we are, what we aspire to be, and then honest truth. Not that you have to like it. It is odd to make a film were the lead is intentionally unlikable, and not in the roguish way.

But then again I am a big fan of Kick-Ass, so mileage clearly varies. :yay:

I like how they handled it. It could have been a lot more heavy handed, but the situation with his mother, his unwillingness to rat, and his affinity for dogs got it over quite well. Plus, My Fair Lady. :woot:

It's fine, if I hadn't asked I'm sure you would have talked about him eventually. Firth and Jackson do give my favorite performances in the film but as you say the movie would fall apart if Egerton was poor. And Mark Strong, must not forget him. Does really good work.

Sam Jackson is so funny here. His reaction to some deaths are just flat out hilarious. He was arguably as funny as his Django character here. Firth is fantastic of course. It is a different side to him, one we haven't really seen, like Ralph Fiennes in Grand Budapest. He also clearly did a lot of his own stunt work, which is impressive enough. But my favorite was Mark Strong. It isn't as deep a role as Firth's, but every last thing he did put a smile on my face.

Right, I was thinking about how good he was in Django while watching Kingsman and I mentioned that to my nephew after he saw the film. Just great character acting. And who would ever think Colin Firth could be a bad ass? Not I that's for sure. And like you say, doing a lot of his own stuntwork as well, you can't ask for more from a performer. I understand why you liked Strong's performance so much.:yay:

Mark Strong is always fun to watch. He has that great enigmatic spy-esque presence.

That movie was awesome! Some of it was a bit much, but otherwise I enjoyed it. The film does a good job and presenting urgency and heightening stakes/suspense in it's writing, editing and direction.
