Kong: Skull Island - Part 4

This past weekend I saw this film projected from a 70mm film print in Chicago

The director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was there for a Q and A. He said when WB approached him about making a 70 print his response was "You know I'm not Chris Nolan, right?"

As it happens, unrelated to this creening Chicago was also playing host to G-fest, the giant monster convention on Saturday. At the convention I was able to meet artist Yuji Kaida who designed the Japanese Kong Skull Island poster. I was able to get him to sign a tiny print of the poster and then also got Vogt-Robert's autograph later in the night. Convenient timing.

How do you compare it to the 2005 movie?

Hard to do since one is a remake and the other is a reboot. Love them both for what they are.

I felt the 2005 movie had better main characters and a better Kong. But it was over an hour longer also.

So the advantage of the new movie is it certainly moves quicker. But I felt Kong needed a bit more development.

I never got around to seeing this in the theater, but I ordered the blu ray on Amazon last night. Will be here on Friday  Can't wait seeing as I really enjoyed Godzilla and am looking forward to this universe going forward. This one looked like a lot of fun and good Kong/monster action. That's all I need :word:

If you're looking for Monster action, get ready for some awesome s**t. Unlike Godzilla, K:SI gets straight in to the action and never lets up. It flies by from one awesome set piece to another. From the
helicopter destruction on arriving upon the Skull Island
to
Psychovultures+ Skull Crawler in the Graveyard
to the final boss fight with the Alpha Skull Crawler (Raamarak), they were all brilliant, inventive, exhilarating and intense. Dang, there were some crazy Monster action in Kong: Skull Island. I hope you love it.

Bro, I don't know how much you'll love the final fight but I'm not underselling it when I say it's mind blowing awesomeness. Kong vs Ramarak is the shiz. It's absolutely balls to the wall action. Ramarak is a worthy opponent for Kong. While I liked the M.U.T.Os a lot, they didn't really wow me with the action. Kiss of Death was cool as hell but Kong vs Ramarak just crushes it.

Plus Kong is a smart guy. He uses all kinds of stuff to put his rivals down. Like I said, the action is really inventive. You'll also see a lot of Monsters/Huge creatures (I won't spoil them). They are really fun. The cinematography from Larry Fong is brilliant as well.

This is probably one of the more leaner monsters movies I've seen. There are like no lulls as far as content goes even when Kong isn't on screen.

They do spend some time setting up Monarch and their expedition to Skull Island but you are introduced to right where the actions is from a really early time. I loved this approach. Jordan Vogt-Roberts really didn't waste any time and gave us loads of cool action.

For those that don't want to be spoiled on anything....I'll put this is spoiler tag -

I had managed to go into the movie without being spoiled on anything....so, when watching the end credits, I noticed a line - Godzilla, King Gidhra, Rodan, and Mothra appear courtesy TOHO FILMS - I looked over to my wife and said "Did I miss something? I didn't see them anywhere.".....and then there was the after credit scene. Nice set up for future films there.

Got to say I didn't think the final fight was anything special, I preferred the action earlier in the movie.

I saw Kong in theaters and thought it was awesome, I loved the choreography and cinematography. I'll have to check it out on DVD.

He displayed quite a bit of distinctive visual style with this, something I would not have predicted from watching Kings of Summer (which was good, but visually rather basic). He's definitely one to watch, imo.

Yeah I really appreciated that. Lots of really cool shots in there.

It was forgettable.

Then again wasn't a fan of the skullcrawlers to begin with.

I thought the Skullcrawlers had a good build up, I just didn't think the Alpha or its fight with Kong was anything special.

But I am getting the movie on BD so maybe it will grow on me.

Made sure I pre-ordered this & have watched it a couple of times already. Seeing it again really makes me appreciate all of the visual treats this movie has to offer. It really is a fun, action movie that strikes a perfect balance of not taking itself too seriously but still being able to explore some serious themes without bashing it over the heads of audiences.

I think I like the movie even more now than I did initially.
