Kong: Skull Island - Part 4

I really didn't care for this movie, which surprised me given how a lot of people I trust told me I would. Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston were completely wasted, John C Rielly was in a completely different movie, Samuel L Jackson was.... well, Samuel L Jackson, so it was kind of cool but not much else. The action and special effects weren't particularly mind-blowing. I definitely prefer Godzilla to this. The human characters there were undercooked but there was more of an effort.

The film in general felt to me really discontinuous. Like a montage of cool sequences rather than one coherent story... well, the story was not there that much anyway.

But this is not problem of Skull Island only. The Force Awakens has around 2.5 times faster transitions than the original Star Wars. Or compare those Abrams Star Treks and Wrath of Khan, the battle sequences in WoK feels much more tactical and strategic because there's space to let thinks breathe and be dramatic rather than cut, cut, cut. I rewatched some scenes from Jurrasic Park and you can see how much of a master Spielberg is. He knows exactly what he's doing, those shots and cuts, the flow... I think some new directors doesn't really know what to do, so they constantly move camera and cut so it looks in motion and interesting because the visual changes themselves keep you occupied.

I thought it was entertaining for what it was. I enjoyed it more than Godzilla which was just one big tease after another. Which is fine if you have compelling characters to ground the story, but it didn't.

I think many give a the problems a pass because it's just a monster/kaiju movie. I couldn't though. The irony is John C. Reilly's character was the only thing I liked - originally I thought I was going to hate him.

No, people who like this movie don't give its issues a pass because it's just a kaiju movie. You could make that same argument with Godzilla's Revenge and no one would take you seriously.

For me personally, the good outweighs the bad. There's some things this movie did better than Godzilla, and vice-versa imo.

Well, dinosaurs or giant monsters have been in the previous movies. I am sure they could come up with something.

Disagree entirely. I thought it perfectly help set the tone for the movie in addition to teasing Kong without making you wait almost another hour before you see him again. You don't have to always wait until mid-way to show the monster.

I second this. I totally did not expect to see Kong so early on in the movie and it was so cool when it happened. I'll give Godzilla (2014) points for keeping a mysterious and more intriguing approach to Godzilla's reveal. Kong was much more direct and in your face. It was non-stop. Kong shows up and he runs circles around his opponents and the action never lets up. I preferred Kong: Skull Island's Kaiju action/screen-time/unveiling.

Same here. I don't mind the slow build and gradually leading up to the monster/Kaiju action, but sometimes it's tiring to sit through Godzilla. The payoff is worth it, but the characters are so dull that nine times out of ten, I'm just gonna pop in Skull Island. It's a true thrill ride through & through. A lot of people feel Larson & Hiddleston were under-used/wasted but I think it's the opposite & greatly enjoyed every time they were on-screen.

Compare that to Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who I love) where his character was just so monotone and negative and Elizabeth Olsen, who truly suffered from not having enough to do.

In fact, Olsen suffered from that the most, especially considering they had her decide to stay in a city being invaded by monsters because her hubby said he'd be there rather than leaving & trying to meet up with him elsewhere in a safer zone. That was one of the dumbest character decisions they could've made.

Saw this on redbox finally and woof this was garbage. Sam Jackson's lines and face at the army barracks were hilarious. Everyone looked like they were phoning it in except John C Reilly. The directing felt like it was a kid painting by numbers. The nerve gas scene with a sword toss? It had some good shots with Kong and the fire but overall this was a mess.

My big complaints about Godzilla were that it had too much teasing of Godzilla (which I loved in the 1st act, but when you're still doing it going into late Act 2/Act 3, it starts to grate), and too much focus on the (incredibly dull) humans. Skull Island remedied both of those. It just got straight to the point, and that point was Kong, lol.

With Godzilla I'm more likely to watch YouTube clips of the Godzilla scenes.

I am pretty sure that the monster that the two WWII soldiers encounter at the beginning of Skull Island would have been one of Kong's parents. After all, Kong
is said to be an adolescent in the story.

It could've been kong if it takes him decades to age. He could've still been a teen even 30 years before.
