Superman Returns Legendary on Board Superman Sequel

He never said it would've bombed. He basically said 9/11 tragedy contributed to Spider-man's success.
I just don't like when people say that about Spider-Man, it's almost as if they are downplaying it's success. I've heard that time and time again and I'm sick of it. I mean StarsWars ep 2 was sequel to a 430 million dollar movie and people get warm and fuzzy feelings for it, StarWars on a whole is considered a classic. Why wasn't it helped by 9/11? No one has ever awswered that question or even asked it for that matter?

Well, Star Wars had a huge built in fanbase. Much larger than pre-movie Spider-man...hype/anticipation alone birthed that monster.

Spider-man was a movie set in NY after a NY disaster...a lot of people were curious as to how it would handle NY in a story after 9/11. I mean, for me it was a non-issue, I was just looking forward to a Spider-man movie. But I can see how it would be an issue for some people.

i'm not downplaying Spidey's success. if anything, i'm acknowledging one of the reasons why it was a success. if you read my posts carefully (instead of biasedly), there's nothing in them that says anything bad about the Spider-Man movies.

StarWars on a whole is considered a classic. Why wasn't it helped by 9/11?
that's because Star Wars, Episode 1 was released before 9/11 and Star Wars, Episode 2 was the 2nd big summer movie to be released in the summer of 2002. it's simple...after 9/11 we needed a hero. SW, Episode 2 was the start of the DOWNFALL of a hero....Spider-Man was the start of the RISE of a hero.

as i said...never underestimate the importance of timing.

I'm shaking my head here. SR is a really bad Superman adaption. If anyones ever read the books would know. So why do you want another chick flick made by a team thats so disrespectful of the character. Think about it, Superman is an icon of masculinity, the original Superhero, and the best they could do was SR?!
So by rehiring the Singerman team and Legendary, are you SR fans looking forward to MORE Jason, MORE superman crying while flying, MORE superman uttering a dozen or less lines of dialogue in HIS (supposed) movie? You want MORE bad super chick flicks made for women basically?
Growing up and reading Superman since I was an child, I really thought of Superman as a "guys" thing, not Barbie and Ken. It's stories for boys. naturally the idea grows and matures over the decades, but for goodness sake we need to put the breaks on NOW and make sure not ONE more Superman chick flick is made by Legendary and Singerman team.
Unbelievable.

/\ I find it funny that some anti-SR get angry when pro-SR stereotypes them and attacks them for not liking the film, yet anti does the same thing back. Is it just me? Or isn't that contradictory?

I'm not stereotyping anyone. I just hate the movie, and believe it's a chick flick. I like some chick flicks, but I don't want Superman to be one.

goodluck with that...i don't think a handful of fanboys are gonna disuade them from making the movie they want to.

A lot of us, including myself, read the books on a monthly basis and love the movie. As for the whole "chick flick" thing, guess what one of the most popular storylines in the 90s was aside from the Death arc.

Superman/Clark's marriage to Lois Lane. His love for Lois has always been the core for the books, and it always will be for the movies.

I don't think it's the fact that there is an emotional story arc, there is in any script, and Sueprman always has and will continue to be about Lois. I think they wanted a better balance between the emotional story arc and the action story.

Well sure,
But you can't stand up and honestly say that Kate Bosworth and Brandon Routh had chemistry in this movie. They were almost as bad as Anakin and Amidala.
Even aside from the romance plot, the acting was terrible between the 2. kate was a horrible Lois Lane. And the kid? WTF. Could we get Superman right first before we complicate everything.
Bad acting, bad actors, silly plot, a little mediocre action, a crap suit, bad editing, horrendous CG double and crap unmemorable music.
And we want ANOTHER movie by this cast and team?
Come on, our standards should be WAY higher. This is Superman. I don't care about box office. I want a Superman movie that blows away anything done before.

Face it- some like it, other's don't. That simple. Just because YOU hated it does not mean that everybody hated it. There are those out there who love the film equal to the amount that you hate the film- believe it or not. You are open to your opinion, just understand that not everyone shares your opinion.

If you understand that this is your opinion- sorry for the rant, just many here seem to not understand that- on both sides.

Yup, I can say that Kate and Brandon had chemistry. I really think they did.

Just because you think something is so doesn't make it fact. It's your honest opinion. That's fine. But a lot of us like the film (acting, writing, plot, and all). Does it have flaws? Yeah, what movie doesn't? But I, personally, love what Bryan Singer did with this flick. I feel he successfully brought the Man of Steel back on screen and back in the public eye.

Now, I'm looking forward to his take on the sequel, which he has promised to be "Wrath of Khan"-esque and to bring a lot from contemporary comics.

And, on a side note, I think Hayden Christensen and Nathalie Portman were great in the Star Wars prequels. ;)

Of course. It's all about personal entertainment at the end of the day.
I just think people should study what they are missing rather than settle for this poor rehash. Naturally a lot of the general public were not too bothered about seeing this. Hardly anyone I know has seen it. And most are like "Bleh..it was ok", while mostly girls were like "It's awesome".
thats disturbing considering this is SuperMAN.;)

I personally hate 'chick flicks' yet loved Superman Returns. In my eye, it's as 'chick flick' as SM and SM2 is- "This is a story all about a girl, that girl Mary Jane Watson, etc." and the films have heavily involved their romance. Heck, they even changed Ock to be married to add to the romance angle of the films. Heck, SM2 had a very similar plot point as SR- just replace Richard with MJ's fiance.

Also I know LOTS of guys that loved the film and hate 'chick flicks'.

So, to me, that's a term that I don't link to SR.

And why do you say that those who loved the film are settling for it? Their not settling for it, they loved the film. There is no 'settling' on it.

I know a lot of folks around here will be disappointed that they're already moving forward with the sequel and that Singer is still attached...but I'm not a lot of folks and I'm happy about it. Now they just need to get Routh's arse back in the weight room. Plus, they need to start spilling the beans on what the story is regarding the villains in the next one so we have something interesting to talk about around here.
Agreed. Especially Routh's weight training...Feed that boy some cheeseburgers.

Dude, you had me until you mentioned Portman...
I thought Kate and Brandon worked well together too....

Huge SW fan, and Portman was brutal in the PT....She even admitted after Ep. 1 she mailed in her performance....Great actress, just not in Star Wars...I like HC in the PT a lot...Very good actor....

Haha, well I didn't say she was magnificent or anything. She was good. I was a little peeved that she kept trashing the prequels, but hey she still pulled off the job. I know I felt bad when her character died.

And I'm glad to see someone else who thought Hayden did an awesome job. People complain about his whining, but that's what an angst ridden Anakin is going to do.

Sure Spidey has a lot of love triangles etc. But it ain't no chick flick. Spideys packed with super villains and super heroic action (stopping trains as well as villains) and ZERO children are running around throwing pianos (lame).
Superman comes off like a big emotional baby in SR. Hes just a dumb heartthrob you'd see in a Linsey Lohan movie. He has about 1 line of dialogue between himself and Luthur. He has nothing to say!THAT is unacceptable when the only villain in a superman movie has ZERO superpowers. I was looking forward to some head to head banter because well lets face it, Supermans such a ninny in SR we kind of figured he wouldn't be punching anything or anyone. He gets his ass whipped by humans, (how compelling, definitely worth a 20 year wait:rolleyes: )
Cyclops is the only MAN in this movie and the only interesting character. Thats pretty sad considering..

To each his own. And guess what? I'm sticking to my opinion. Why, after you tried to prove me wrong? It's my opinion, just like you have your own opinion. And I still see labeling SR as a chick flick is ridiculous, because I see it as much as 'chick flick' as the SM movies are- albiet, less action sequences. You didn't like it, I did. Easy as that.

look into the pattern....when I count to 3 you will change your opinion! You will agree with everything I've said..

Dizzy......Dizzy.......Dizzyyyyyyyyyyy..........AGH!!!!! HULK SMASH FUNNY COLOR RING SWIRL!!!! HULK MAD!!!!!!

Calm..... calm..... Superman Returns, imo, is a really great movie, not a chick flick, and can't wait until the sequel.

Worked- didn't it?

Actually, Singer himself called it a chick flick.

Compared to the other films he has made. Which, in that case would be true. Yes, there was romance in the X-Men films, but alot less than the Spider-Man films. In the same comparison to X-Men level romance, Spidey would be a chick flick as well.

But, as said before- to each his own.

I see Spider-Man and Superman to be superhero-romantic films.

Espeacially Spider-Man 2.........:eek::down

I really enjoyed the SR movie and enjoyed reading the novel too.

And I wish the ratings were much better - My friends and I went to see the movie 4 times, because we enjoyed the film.

Wormy you do have a very good strong point - and I Agree with you about what you are saying "how the movie is a chick flick"

The next film just doesnt need the Action - but would be awesome to see and experience the Superman we were exposed to when our imaginations were young and limitless!

You said it best Wormy - A Superman that blows away anything done before.

Routh looked great in this first film, however He does need to come across more Masculine.

And look more masculine too.

Btw Mr. Routh : Drink Nitrotech, Celltech, and take Nitrix or some form of nitic oxide to keep that pump on screen.

Or better yet take the entire BSN or Muscel tech line to boost that frame more.

He showed us his emtional side, How about show us Supermans masculine side.

The strength we used to read about when we were young - from those paperback colored comic pages.

The Man who we dreamed we could someday become and evolve into - when we were just boys.

To do more then just leap tall buildings and out run a locamotive, but become the very Superman himself in our young imaginative dreams.
