New GODZILLA To Parallel Japan's Fukushima Nuclear Disaster?

god40.24.jpg

As you will remember, in 2011, Japan was rocked by a magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake off the coast of Tōhoku. The earthquake, which was the most powerful one to hit Japan, triggered massive tsunami waves, as high as 133 feet. While the earthquake and tsunamis destroyed buildings and lead to the deaths of 16,000 citizens, it also caused nuclear meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex.

When filming began in the middle of March, the Vancouver Convention Centre was being used as the Honolulu airport. The televisions that could be seen by photographers had the message, “Earthquake Rocks Eastern Japan,” scrolling across the screens. Since then, we've seen an abandoned Japanese fishing village that was, based on signage, in a Nuclear quarantine zone. Stars of the film, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, were spotted just a few days ago walking through a deserted Japanese street. You can see images of that empty street below. The Coquitlam paper recycling plant on the Fraser River was used as the Janjira nuclear power station. You can also see an image of that signage below.

None of this should come as too much of a surprise as Frank Darabont ("Shawshank Redemption"), who was hired to rewrite the script, hinted at this when he was interviewed by io9.

Godzilla has its origins as an allegory for the atom bomb, but today it's more of a straightforward monster movie. Do you want to restore some of that allegorical significance to the franchise?

Frank Darabont: What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the **** out of your city, that was Godzilla. Filtered through the very fanciful imaginations of the Japanese perception. And then he became Clifford the Big Red Dog in the subsequent films. He became the mascot of Japan, he became the protector of Japan. Another big ugly monster would show up and he would fight that monster to protect Japan. Which I never really quite understood, the shift.

What we're trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We're kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It's not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It's different, it's a different set of circumstances than you're used to seeing. And that's tremendously exciting as a writer when you're asked to do something else.

Are you looking to connect it to a different contemporary issue?

Frank Darabont: Yes I am, but I'm not going to give it away.

You know what I'm hoping to see before filming finishes? A giant footprint. I'm surprised they haven't done it yet.

Lol, it definitely wouldn't work on me. It just bothers me that that's what they're attempting to do and it might be working on people.

You raise a good point. When I joined the military, it was because of the Godzilla movies I watched as a child. I was really surprised to find nearly all my peers joined because of Transformers or Battle: Los Angeles. And you'd be surprised how often we really do fight aliens and kaiju.

I would be taken out of the movie if the military just threw up their arms and said "whaddya gonna do?" every time Godzilla smashed a metropolitan area or Cybertronians had a battle. If it takes place in a universe with no military, okay I guess.

I was wondering if it would keep the nuclear themes even though its in no way scientifically plausible to the general audience nowadays. I wonder if it'll be genetically induced. That could mean someone made Godzilla on purpose, or just an experiment gone wrong. Or it may not be a genetic origin. I suppose I had that as my first thought because superheroes used to be all radioactive, and now they're all caused by genetic engineering. Who knows?

Why can't the awesome San Francisco-set stuff ever actually shoot in SF? :csad:

Legendary Pictures Bringing GODZILLA And SEVENTH SON To San Diego Comic-Con

With an official announcement coming tomorrow, it has been confirmed that Legendary Pictures will return to SDCC this year (despite splitting from Warner Bros.) in a "big" appearance. Among the films that will be present are Godzilla and Seventh Son.

While its "big" presence will officially be announced tomorrow, Deadline has confirmed that Legendary Pictures will appear at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday, July 20th. Despite its split from Warner Bros. being underway, the company will showcase the Godzilla reboot (which hits theaters May 16th, 2014) and the Jeff Bridges fantasy film Seventh Son (which was recently pushed to January 17th, 2014), among other movies, during WB's panel. A Legendary Comics booth will be present on the floor of the San Diego Convention Center, and a monster-themed event is scheduled for pre-SDCC on July 16th, possibly to tie into Pacific Rim (which hits theaters July 12th) and/or Godzilla. Last year, WB/Legendary's panel was a big success, after showcasing the likes of Guillermo del Toro's giant robots vs. giant monsters epic, Man Of Steel, and a Godzilla teaser. Are you looking forward to seeing what they have to offer this year?

And off of the Legendary Picture's Facebook page:

Hot Topic will be selling GODZILLA Tees very soon, hopefully they won't be too expensive, I want one!

El Mayimbe said there's something very special happening with Godzilla at the SDCC, they plan on revealing Godzilla by having him emerge from the bay near SDCC, he says he has no idea how they're planning to do it, whether practical effects somehow mixed with CG, or maybe holograms. Should be spectacular!

When should we be getting our first trailer?

Literally, Pacific Rim provides the perfect ****ing opportunity. Let's hope next week!

Lizzie Olsen and Kick-@$$ are enough human awesomeness in this movie for me.

Hopefully with Pacific Rim.
I figure it would have shown up on Alberta Film Ratings by now if it were coming next week.

Next ray of hope would be Elysium.

Why they would show a teaser of Godzilla before SDCC is beyond me. It wont happen.

Why not?

It's transpired before where a big teaser was played back before a panel, to start it. I was in attendance for Avengers in NYCC. The first thing they did was show the trailer on the big screens again.
