Legendary Pictures' 2014 Godzilla Reboot - Directed by Gareth Edwards - Part 1

Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen? That's the first bit of news that has actually gotten me interested in this project. They are both fantastic.

Godzilla doesn't need its own forums, though. Star Wars and Star Trek got theirs because they are multi-media mega-giants: with popular TV shows, movies, comics, cartoons, video games, etc. And they are franchises with definite sequels in the future. I feel like if something is not superhero-oriented, that's the base requirement for something to get its own forum here at the Hype. The last Godzilla wasn't exactly a hit, the pop culture demand for other Godzilla products is pretty much at zero, and this movie is in no way guaranteed success or a sequel yet, so the brand has a long way to go before it's earned its own forum here, imo.

I have to agree. I'm a Godzilla fan but despite its cult following, it's niche despite the cultural impact. Well niche compared to the height of its popularity back in the day or past/presen in Japan.

Yeah. Besides, you don't need a seperate thread for everything Godzilla related but you would for each generation of Star Trek or Bond film.

Elizabeth Olsen is drop dead gorgeous. I'll go as far as to say that I find her to be the most attractive girl on the scene right now (in terms of a beautiful face). It doesn't hurt that she's one of the best young actresses out there too.

I'd rather it be more Godzilla-centric and more about his effects on civilization.

I'd like a realistic depiction of how a creature like that affects a major city.

A big movie like this one would start the franchise, and if it's good then the popularity will follow. It's Godzilla, so people already know the name. All it needs now is something to engage current audiences. Plus, maybe even another animated series... though, I'm not so sure about that.

So would you consider the Godzilla franchise to be a sleeping giant in a way? All it needing is a good blockbuster American franchise for it to truely become one of the big popular franchises?

I feel like the franchise has everything but missing that one push. That big American film franchise. Godzilla is a well known name and obviously there is some popularity there or else Legendary wouldnt be waisting their time with it. The IDW comics seem to be selling well and the new articulated Godzilla toys from Bandai have been mega hot. It just seems like its only missing that one thing and thats a big budget American Godzilla franchise. Kinda like Dragon Ball Z in a way.

What I am hoping to happen is look as a Godzilla fan I know the franchise may never be as popular as Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Transformers, TMNT, Star Trek or GI Joe but if it became as big as a franchise like Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones or bigger than that then I would be happy you know? When Tri Star wanted to do their trilogy in the 90s they were quoted as saying they wanted this to be a big franchise for them like Star Trek for Paramount and Batman for WB.

I'd like to be able to go into a store like Target or Walmart and find at least some Godzilla merchandise like you can in Toys R Us, FYE/Suncoast/Sam Goody and comic stores. Hell I even find the graphic novels in book stores and for a small time I found a shirt or 2 in Hot Topic. I would just like that to be a consistent thing.

I want this movie to show American studios that Godzilla is worth investing in for future generations too.

Now let me ask you this....what do you think the franchise would be like now here in America if Sony DID NOT screw up in the 90s an actually made a good big budget American Godzilla trilogy like they originally wanted starting with the Jan De Bont film and Stan Winston designed Godzilla?

For one, I don't think the franchise would be dead if they made a good trilogy back then. It would be in a much better place than it is now and instead of bringing it back from the dead, maybe it would be the continuation of the trilogy you mentioned. And I think Godzilla can be as popular as something like Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc. if they just put in the effort... if something like Transformers can make all of that money with a crappy story but great special effects, imagine what a Godzilla movie with an engaging story and amazing special effects could accomplish. It already has that "cool factor", all of the cool monsters just like Transformers has the cool robots and G.I. Joe has the cool soldiers for the kids to eat up. Now just interest the adults as well(great story, characters you care about) and you've got the (re)start to a fantastic franchise.

I really think giant monster/mech movies are going to get big again, starting with Pacific Rim this year and continuing with Godzilla next year.
