Legendary Pictures' 2014 Godzilla Reboot - Directed by Gareth Edwards - Part 1

For one, I don't think the franchise would be dead if they made a good trilogy back then. It would be in a much better place than it is now and instead of bringing it back from the dead, maybe it would be the continuation of the trilogy you mentioned. And I think Godzilla can be as popular as something like Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc. if they just put in the effort... if something like Transformers can make all of that money with a crappy story but great special effects, imagine what a Godzilla movie with an engaging story and amazing special effects could accomplish. It already has that "cool factor", all of the cool monsters just like Transformers has the cool robots and G.I. Joe has the cool soldiers for the kids to eat up. Now just interest the adults as well(great story, characters you care about) and you've got the (re)start to a fantastic franchise.

I really think giant monster/mech movies are going to get big again, starting with Pacific Rim this year and continuing with Godzilla next year.
That's interesting that you say Godzilla has the potential to be as big a franchise as a lot of the major ones. You would be surprised that some Godzilla fans believe it CAN'T happen and believe that not many people care for the franchise outside the fan base. It would be nice to see Godzilla become a regular thing again here in America

Now let me ask you this. Do you think Pacific Rim especially if its a hit could hurt the new American Godzilla film in any way?
And do you believe that the release date for either Godzilla or Ninja Turtles will change because i cant see both movies coming out that weekend. They will both lose money.

Not at all, if anything, I think Pacific Rim will boost Godzilla if it revitalizes the love for giant monster movies like I think it will do... That's if Pacific Rim is a hit, now if it isn't then it might harm Godzilla's chances with American audiences because we tend to unfairly compare movies that have similar plots/looks even though they aren't at all related. For example, some people are comparing the upcoming 'Oz the Great and Powerful' to 2010's 'Alice in Wonderland', just because they resemble each other and are made by Disney. Although, I think these movies will be completely different from each other(Oz might actually be good unlike Alice) Godzilla could face the same problem since both it and PR are made by WB/Legendary Pictures and are giant monster movies.

And yeah, I think one of the release dates will change once we get closer to the date. I think Godzilla will be the one to change because TMNT already has a pull on the kids(also older people who grew up in 80's and 90's) and is huge in America, while Godzilla has to prove itself to them. The move will be for the better though, and in the long run, I think Godzilla stands a chance of coming out on top when compared to TMNT, but it definitely won't be easy. Bay's attached, so they'll probably include 'Produced by Michael Bay, director of Transformers' in the trailers to pull in even more audiences. Not to mention Bay has a fourth Transformers coming out next year as well so they will capitalize on that.

A big movie like this one would start the franchise, and if it's good then the popularity will follow. It's Godzilla, so people already know the name. All it needs now is something to engage current audiences. Plus, maybe even another animated series... though, I'm not so sure about that.

Engaging the audiences is the trick that will either have Godzilla succeed or fail at the box office. It has to be more than just a spectacle, just as it has to be more than Godzilla fighting other Kaiju. However, if Edwards can bring together a storyline that's just as alluring as the (hopefully) awing effects that will assuredly be front and center with the film's promotion, then we have a very good chance of having a winner here.

It's a delicate balance, but I remain optimistic Legendary, Edwards, and company can achieve this.

Frankly I'm surprised Paramount hasn't delayed it because the reception has been really negative so far.

So far the casting choices for Godzilla have been really great and that will help draw audiences in. What the first teaser needs to do is establish this is a new Godzilla yet the old Godzilla at the same time make sense? Keep the traits of the old Godzilla while showing its a whole new different film.

I'm also anxious to see what kind of merchandise we will get with this?

Also- For anyone that collects Bandai SH MonsterArts figures the revealed a new Godzilla figure.

Olsen appears to be onboard. She talked about Godzilla at the BAFTAs.

they don't need to throw in a "bunch of creatures."

but Godzilla need to face off with at least one big, bad monster.

It's already been established that Godzilla will fight 2 NEW monsters in the legendary pic.

Gareth Edwards himself said that over a year ago when the script was originally being written by David Goyer.

Max Borenstein and Frank Darabont re-wrote the final script.

Production runs from March 14th to July 22, 2013.

Release date is May 16, 2014.

Which means we SHOULD get a theatrical teaser trailer by the end of this year.

EDIT: Well, it's official. Elizabeth Olsen starts filming Godzilla in the Spring :D

Should be attached with The Hobbit this December.

I imagine it will be like this

Teaser trailer with MOS or Pacific Rim or both

Full theatrical trailer with The Hobbit Part 2

I keep bringing this up but I really hope they make an iteration of the classic Godzilla theme.

Isn't this movie competing against 'Ninja Turtles' and we haven't heard crap from that movie in a year? I think it's in trouble and I wouldn't be surprised if it quietly died.

It wasn't sounding all too great. I was on board at first but as more info leaked it just sounded absolutely dreadful.

Yeah, the backlash of 'Ninja Turtles' was one of the few backlashes that makes sense on the interwebs. Seriously, I hate backlashes in general but there's a certain logic to this one. It's a total disregard for the franchise, with the obligatory "We're fans/it's faithful/that leaked script was old (even though it was not)" spin coming from Bay and the hack director they got.

My girlfriend got me this shirt for Valentine's day. It is gloriously obnoxious. Its hard to make out in this picture but the pattern behind godzilla is actually really bright.

I love this shirt.

I have a similar one with the Superman crest on it, only mine is from India. So bad it's great.

Turtles is gonna suck, cuz they aren't even Turtles. They are aliens. I hope that project fails epically.

. . . . . . .

And as for a Teaser trailer attached to "Pacific Rim"?

Maybe Legendary will finally release the teaser trailer from last year's San Diego Comic Con, that hasn't been released to the general public.

Who knows. But if they're smart, then Legendary/WB should release the damn thing since we've heard it's masterful.

Tristar's Godzilla.

What a crapfest.

Thank GOD Legendary is doing the reboot
and sticking with his Japanese origins.
Especially his atomic heat ray!!

Saw that in another thread and quoted it here. Godzilla has an atomic heat ray? Is it something that shoots from his mouth or eyes? Also, do we have confirmation that it will be in this new movie?
