Superman Returns Lex Luthor's True Characterization Expanded On (Hes not doing a homage to Hackman)

In Singer's defence, I don't think this a bad movie at all. I'm looking foward to it. I think one issue that people have is that Singer played it safe. To a point, I do have an issue with that too. When I mean 'safe' I don't mean the spiritual side or personal conflict of this flick.

I mean that Singer chose a path where he presents the most basic concept of Superman, and adds another layer (Supes leaving and coming back to a more cynical world), but doesn't include any of the more mythos from the modern comics. For example, STAR Labs or hints of other supervillains.

It's fine but it's a very old school via Donner/Burton era where it seems not a lot of research was actually done, unlike what Nolan did with Batman Begins.

Yeah, it COULD be basically a 'remake' of sorts, but it's Superman and that's exciting. I dont agree with everything that Singer chose to go with (I'm waiting for Spacey's Lex) but I don't think this will be a diaster. In fact it could be a great cinematic experience.

I need at least ONE good comic book movie this year, and so far, X3 was crap. That's why I hope that this movie will kick arse.

I'm sure by the sequel that Singer will have to do more research, since I'm ASSUMING that he'll go with another villain. Either way, he has to since Spider-Man 3 has 4 baddies, Fantastic Four has Galatix and Silver Surfer, and Batman Begins Again has a whole army of rogues to deal with.

anyway..

Even though I read the book, Just hoping that Lex will even be more DARKER than his novel counterpart. I'm still having doubts on Kitty though..............

i dunno why everybdoy is so worried about Lex. have any of you actually seen a movie where Spacey turned in a lousy performance? if there's anything predictable about the man is the consistency of his work.
K-pax.

I thought K-Pax was good movie and Spacey's acting was nice.

hmm...Kane is banned. Knew that was coming sooner or later. What did he do?

I didn't get it, what you mean?
I'm saying that you are the most overzelous Superman Returns fan on the boards and have openly expressed your love for Spacey and won't even consider that he isn't great in all of his roles and that he might not be great as Lex.

Don't fret there are lots of people like you on the Supes board and every other board. Hell I'm kinda a Spidey zelot, although I think I'm a little more open to Spidey 3 sucking than you are to Superman Returns not being great.

You think that I liked Spacey in K-Pax, only because he is in SR?

I liked him before he even was connected with this film

He is my favorite actor!

I also love Bale'sn acting, not only for BB, but also for Empire of the Sun.

I love Cage's acting in Leaving Las-Vegas.

Thats all.

actually half these boards are not as overzealous as you think it is. hence the occasional board wars. dont believe me? ask C.Lee, he'll give you the latest rundown of threads he had to close because Supesfans were getting into each others faces.

i'm a long time Spacey fan, but i'm first to admit that not all his films were great (K-Pax was odd-boring, The Shipping News and The Life of David Gale dragged in certain parts just for starters), but Spacey is consistent in his performances in all his films. that's why he's one of my favorite actors. even if the script isnt so good he finds ways and means to make the best out of it-- and it shows. with someone of his stature its so easy to get lazy with the work (like Brando did in later years), Spacey gives 101% of his efforts every single time. that's why i'm not nervous whith his Lex performance. if SR does tank, his is one of the few saving graces this film will ever have.

Some movies like The Shippin News were bad, but Spacey was great in every his movie.

I love American Beauty, not only because there was Spacey, but also because it was GREAT movie.

My #1.

Quality of acting is not the probem. It's the entire take ion teh character from the writers, Singer, and Spacey. He'll give a GREAT performance, but possibly of a version of the character that some people don't care for.

The same could be said of the whole film - it'll probably be a great film, better than the others (even the first)... but it'll be a great film of a take on a Superman movie that really doesn't sit well with some of us.

luj, there isnt a film out there that will please everyone, you know that. in a film that you dont like as much but managed to see right through to the end, there has to be something in it that made it worth your while-- otherwise you would've gotten up and left right? i know i've seen quite a number of films that in the end i disliked but had a few saving graces (either cinematography or actors' performance). regardless of how SR will turn out Spacey will be one of the few things you can safely predict wont be a waste of time watching.
