there's as much camp as serious lex in the trailers and they don't give you the whole movie and we haven't even seen him interact with Kitty yet
Oh yes Kitty, another thing that points to a campy Lex. Ofcourse I haven't seen the movie yet, I'm just saying.

OMG!, again! There were only 2-3 scenes with campy Lex in trailers. While serious Lex had 7-8 scenes.

I think he is something between Hackman's Luthor and Luthor from comics.

There are moments in the novel where Lex is badass. Then he'll go back in being kinda goofy. Mind you, this doesn't mean that Spacey will follow suit.

For example, after Lex defeated Supes, he's playing poker. POKER? He goes back to "You idiots! I'm smarter than any of you!" mode.

Lex is almost like bi-polar. It might work in the movie, but in the book, he's like a yo-yo and it doesn't work for me. It takes away from the menace that he DOES display.

I don't see how he still isn't cold and calculating. Because even the Lex you mention, still at times has dark humorous moments. But yes, I respect your opinion.

I know what you mean, but when the Lex I mentioned is humorous, it's because he basically runs whomever he is speaking to into the ground with his words. For example, the " muffin peddling dropout " comment in Smallville. I mean, that comment was just d^ck. But Spacey's Lex seems to have the " Your all so stupid and Im so smart, I keep you around to make fun of you " , style of humor that Hackman displayed.

I hope that in the movie, that "YOu're all stupid and I'm so smart" attitude will be toned down. Less is more and ACTION speaks LOUDER than words.

If Lex is smart, then show it, than just keep on saying it.

Ahh, I see your point. I can agree with that.

This thread contains a large amount of people that don't know what campy means.

Lex would be camp if how he acted in the trailers was sincere. But he isn't. He is ACTING silly, because he's trying to intimidate the other characters. That's not campy, because it isn't an exagerrated caricature. It's just Lex acting silly.

Then pay attention. He's obviously putting on an act. It's to put the viewer off track to make the "WRONG!" moment more shocking.

i paid attention thank you and all that is there is a panto charcter going on like a goon

Panto characters are silly all the time. They are purposely exagerrated. This is Lex having fun, like a normal human being, an extension of his character. Therefore, by DEFINITION, he is not campy.

If it's part of his personality to act like a goon then campiness is inherent in his personality.

It's not part of his personality to act like a goon, he is just pretending. You know how people in real life mock people by acting silly? That's what Lex is doing.

I disagree,he's going on like a goofball cos that's the way they wrote him by the looks of it,he may be serious in parts of the movie but he is obviously prone to campy outbursts when he gets excited

I understand where the writers are coming from, but the Lex I prefer and actually buy as a "real" person with understandable motivations was characterized in Lex Luthor: MOS and Maggin's Last Son of Krypton. Essentially I want NONE of Hackman's Lex evident in my ideal interpreation of Lex, he isn't some cookie cutter villain with views of World Destruction (though I think it works here as a nice counterbalance against how Superman's own homeworld was destroyed) but rather a hero in his own mind. I like the notion that if Superman had never existed Lex would have been the greatest hero earth had ever seen.

..

Gene Hackman's Lex was like a real person with understandable motivations. He had a sense of humour, didn't act evil just because but was actually pretty charming. Like evil people in the real world. Also, his goal to earn money through real estate is much more logical than most comic book plots.

When will you get it? Lex is not campy because the sillyness isn't sincere. Just say this Lex isn't to your liking, and i'll leave you alone. But do not say he is campy.
