Yeah, count me as another one who finds it both irksome and kind of weird how Hollywood seems to really hate the idea of doing any kind of classical myth movie as actually mythical. Its almost always some strong degree of de-mythification, even in the movies that don't strip out all the magic.

There's really no reason for them not to have DeVito reprise the role in live action. If anything, it'd be even less of a stretch than James Earl Jones reprising Mufasa at 88. It doesn't even matter that DeVito is 77 either because it's not like Phil is supposed to be young and in his prime.

That's some high praise. Woods was great as Hades but personally I wouldn't put him on the same pedestal as Robin's Genie. That was in a league of its own. I can picture a Hercules without Woods as Hades, since Jack Nicholson was the original choice for the character but I can't picture Aladdin working nearly as well without Robin Williams.

They ain't touching Woods with a 100ft pole. DeVito is a much likelier possibility since he's one of those actors that everyone likes and apart from that, he'd still absolutely suit the character of Phil.

Conceptually, I could see how this could work really well, especially with the themes (namely self-promotion) and songs from the original flick. But to pull it off, you need a strong writer and director, and we have the guy who made the inert and pretty terrible Aladdin remake. so....
