Fantasy Live action Hercules in the works at Disney

It’s not fooling anyone
That's literally what it does. Can you tell from this shot that RDJ is actually five inches shorter than Chris Evans in real life?

So Taron Egerton is 5'9. Big deal. I'd rather him in the role than someone who's 6'4 who can't act or sing.

To be fair, Hercules is supposed to be Thor level height/build. So in that case, there is a massive difference when Hemsworth is standing next to any of the Avengers.

But even more than height, I like Taron but I actually don’t buy him as this innocent young god coming into his own at this point. He’s a bit too old. I’m actually surprised they’re not going for a young unknown ala Superman which is what this part basically is.

They can't really negotiate or circle anyone right now. The actors are on strike.

God help them if Danny DeVito isn't Phil.

Does it really matter? It's not like these live-action remakes are good or something of exceptional quality.

These movies are little more than pale imitations of the animated versions and their quality is usually terrible.

At the very least, Taron Egerton can sing.

It matters because apart from DeVito being one of those rare celebrities that everyone likes that would appeal to audiences for this, he's expressed interest in playing the part again. It would be a lot more fun to see him in it regardless if the movie is bad or not.

Egerton is good for this; he might not be tall but he can bulk up to Hercules shape (he was JACKED in Black Bird). Most actors are around 5’10” or shorter anyway so as long as they don’t cast a bunch of people who are 6’5” around him it will look fine. And like others have said he can sing.

As for Ariana Grande… if she can act then I’m fine with the casting but I have to admit that even as a singer, I find her kind of boring. I remember that song and video she did with Gaga and it felt almost unfair to have her next to a performer of Gaga’s range and persona. I’m not opposed to casting singers in movies if they are good (Gaga and Janelle Monae are great actors) but I have my doubts about Grande.

Disney has pretty much lost me an all their live action remakes. As much as I loved Hercules and many of the original Disney animated films.... I just can't get behind these live action remakes after constant disappointment one film after another. There's only been maybe one or two that I found somewhat entertaining.

Another reason I don't get this, while I like the Hercules movie, the original was not a big hit to begin with.

Lol I mean you could just ignore the thread and movie Vile. We get it you hate these remakes.

Taron Egerton would be good but he’s in his early 30s and doesn’t look like he could pass for younger. Ariana Grande is a fine singer but I just find her so unlikeable even before all the recent scandal.

And none of the recent live action Hercules movies have been hits either.

Hercules (or Heracles) is basically the Greek mythology version of Dracula or Robin Hood. Whenever movie studios are bereft of new ideas, they eventually come back around to making a Herc movie that no one was asking for.

It's true. But it's also worth noting that out of all the Hercules adaptations, the Disney movie is easily the most popular. Even though it was never a Beauty and the Beast or Lion King type of hit back in the day, it's become something of a cult classic among millennials who grew up with it. Love it or hate it, this one was always a no-brainer for Disney to give the live action treatment.

Why not make actual theatrical sequels to these films instead?

With the exception of newer movies like Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph, Disney pretty much beat that horse to death with the onslaught of direct to video sequels 20-25 years ago just like they're beating the live action remake horse to death these days. On that note, it's interesting that while Hercules got a spinoff prequel series, it never got a DTV sequel considering how much source material they had to pull from.

The live-action remake onslaught I'd say has been beaten well and truly to death at this point, and the returns are diminishing. Like they are actually planning more "live-action" Lion King films, including the Scar prequel, an Aladdin sequel, and an Aladdin Prince Anders sequel. The throwaway character Jasmine rejects in the film.

I forgot about that one. If that hasn't been cancelled already, I'm almost certain it will be.

Fun fact The Lion King 2 was meant to be such a sequel.
Interesting. I had heard that Toy Story 2 was originally planned to go direct to video but I never knew that it was the other way around for Lion King 2. It probably would have done well since it's one of the better DTV movies. A theatrical movie with polished animation, better songs and 100% less Andy Dick could have been a hit for them but I'm sure they made bank on video sales anyway.

Probably for the best. I feel like Ritchie is best when he’s doing his own thing (as long as he doesn’t get too far up his own *** like in Revolver) but when he does these big mainstream movies, he kinda sucks. I know Aladdin and the Sherlock Holmes movies made money but I felt like he was out of his element.

The Sherlock movies at least still felt like Guy Ritchie movies, albeit a little more Hollywood-ed up. Even though I enjoyed it, Aladdin was definitely just a paycheck movie for him, and if I was watching that with no idea who directed it I'd never guess it was him. I'm sure his Hercules would have been the same thing.
