And the Redband trailer is even better. :')

This looks awesome. So glad they went R. Thank God for deadpool.

You know all of the images had me thinking that this was some kind of post apocalyptic future, that's why it was so strange to me that so much bad happened between the end of DOFP and this time. But I see that it's just the way Logan isolated himself from humanity in a sense. I guess I'm just used to seeing them in a big city setting. Civilization is normal, it's just that mutants don't exist anymore for some reason. I'm also starting to think that the X-Men aren't dead, at least not all of them. Maybe they all went their separate ways for one reason or another. Maybe even in different countries.
The world isn't necessarily post-Apocalyptic, as lot have mentioned. People took the OML inspiration too literally, whereas Mangold just says it's just him being able to channel a more Western vibe thanks to it. (The film also seems to be taking more cues from Uncanny X-Men #251 to begin with too.) The world still exists and moves on, it's just lesser. The once celebrated X-Men are no more, but it's not the end of the world. They're just not there right now.

From the Collider write up it seems like [BLACKOUT]the Statue of Liberty event from X1 occurs differently and the mutants lose their powers from Magneto's machine instead of ordinary people gaining them and dying.[/BLACKOUT]

At least that's how I'm interpreting it right now.

Just because the X-Men is accepted by certain segments of the public doesn't mean that all mutants are accepted. We don't even know whether the X-Men are celebrated as heroes worldwide. All we know is that they are well-known enough to have comics based on them. The comics may even be doing the X-Men a disservice by fictionalizing and reducing their tragedies and history for the entertainment of the general public (implied by Logan himself when he dismisses the comic as only 'a quarter of it had happened'), which in itself may be a form of prejudice (like how there was a backlash against the Disney version of the Pocahontas story).

Prejudice comes in many forms, and they can be extremely subtle. We have gay celebrities in Hollywood that are accepted, doesn't mean that there is no anti-gay prejudice out there.

unfortully this goes very much in hand with apocalypse which had them a bit too well accepted and especilly deadpool.

while their portrayal of deadpool was fine in solo film i had issues with what deadpool did with other aspects of X universe.at least mangold is doing gritty
film.who knows what other directors will do with celebrated heroes X_Men.same thing with apocalypse singer was out of his comfort zone doing more accepted mutants.

Depends how many times they filmed takes and whether the F-bomb was used every time

Have you not seen how sometimes different takes are used in trailers then the movies?
Mangold's just saying the film hasn't been rated yet, not that the film won't be rated R. Films don't get rated until later on. This will be 100% rated R, regardless if they use all of the F-bombs or not.

that is intresting.guess magneto still come sinto conflict evetully.the write up also suggests wolverine is still found fighting in cages like he was In first X-Men

So most of X1 is still canon but the end of DOFP is not??
that's interesting

I'm glad to see Wolvie gets his mutton chops back at some point tho

I do feel the whole X-MEN merchandise in the X-Men universe is going abit far, it feels like the X-Men should be heroes that are not glorified, they are left unappreciated but thats the world they live in.

maybe because they are dead here this was their way of keep the X-Men name alive but its like alot to take in really.

You probably could make so many jokes about the X-Men being celebrities with comics and merchandise in the film universe.

That's not unfortunate for me, it's just an evolution of the metaphor, like what Grant Morrison was doing with New X-Men. It's not realistic if EVERY SINGLE HUMAN hates the X-Men, nor is it interesting if the X-Men are unappreciated heroes forever. That's not how prejudice works. The reality is much more complicated than that. There are some who will be fascinated by mutants (particularly among youths who would be attracted to the notion of superpowers), some who will be scared of them. So the X-Men becoming celebrated heroes is fine, if we get to see a dark side to it i.e. the non superhero mutants continue to be persecuted, or the celebrity comes with a price like how the comics may depict a very inaccurate version of the X-Men's history.

I'm starting to appreciate Mangold more and more, in that he does his own thing with these movies, but still pay homage to past events. Like making The Wolverine a direct consequence of Logan killing Jean and having her appear in the movie, and referencing the Statue of Liberty here. It gives the character of Wolverine a sense of continuity in a franchise where continuity is very questionable.

They're not negating the end of DOFP, they're just moving forward to when things have deteriorated. Some of the spoiler-y write ups do provide details but
they do reference Liberty Island and how Logan came to the mansion, which can be used to assume that some of the events of the OT still played in a similar manner in this timeline

DigitalSpy has a very in depth trailer breakdown from Mangold! This kinda stuff usually goes to Empire, so I'm rather surprised DS is covering this kinda stuff to this extent.

I don't know whether mentioning the stature of liberty is explaining what happened to mutants or its just abit of X1 referencing, i assumed it was just referencing X1 since he also mentions the cage fight thing also.

It makes sense to do it though since its Jackmans last movie and you are celebrating his 16 years as the character so you do want to acknowledge alot of these things.

BUT given how very little is said about those event like he doesn't go into any detail about the statue of liberty thing or the cage fight it could still be considered very much ambiguous.

Didn't I read that Logan is supposed to take place just a few years after the end of DOFP? I hope they offer an explanation as to where everyone went and how Logan aged so much in that short amount of time...

This movie looks amazing, but it bums me out bc the end of DOFP was such a perfect happy ending for everything in Logan's timeline.

sorry i disagree.especilly since i am no fan of grant morrison run on X-Men.it was begining of the end of me as buyer of new X-Men comics after years of
buying new ones.

Mangold seems to mostly like wolverine stories where wolverine is down and out.in the wolverine logan lost his healing powers for much of film.here he is very down and out.

I am willing to bet the statue of liberty will be left ambiguous because i doubt the next X-Men movie or the next one after that will be directing magneto to that place where he decides to create a turn humans into mutants machine with some lackeys.

It makes sense to bring those events up since its jackmans last movie but anything they do with magneto now probably won't be a prequel to those events at this point since it very much restricts them with what direction they can go in.

Six years is a long time... ;)

Mangold on X23

When asked if this movie was written with the intention of passing the Wolverine mantle on to X-23, Mangold said, “I always feel like I’m making a one-off movie every time. My feeling is that if you can make a good film, it’s naturally going to lend itself to people wanting to see sequels because it’s good and the characters are rich. I really wasn’t thinking about [passing the torch] — and I know the studio wasn’t because they didn’t even know who X-23 was when I brought it up.”

Additionally, Mangold stated that he and the other filmmakers “weren’t thinking about merchandising or starting a new line of movies — what we were thinking about was the interesting themes in this film. What we have going for us are great cross-generational relationships between Charles and Logan; this great father/son relationship there, with a son caring for his ailing father, in this case someone with degenerate brain diseases in the world’s most powerful brain. And in the case of Logan and Laura, a father-daughter relationship, with a father who’s very loathed to have intimacy or an emotional connection with almost anyone. There’s a lot of drama and a lot of interpersonal drama that truly drives the feature.”

Up until this point, the official materials released for “Logan” have been cagey about calling Dafne Keen’s clawed character X-23. Mangold addressed that while cutting through all the mystery, firmly stating that she is X-23 and she will be called that in the film — at least once. “We’re avoiding calling her [X-23] right now for reasons I can’t explain other than I think they’re trying to keep that from breaking, but I don’t give a s**t,” said Mangold. “The reality is, yes, we call her everything you would call her, although no one is going to refer to a child as a letter and two numbers very often.”

So let me make sure I got this right..

Timeline A: X1, X2, X3, The Wolverine, DOFP

Timeline B: The end scene of DOFP, Apocolypse, Logan

And while I'm thinking about it, did they ever offer an as explanation as to how Xavier was alive in DOFP besides him telling Logan at the end of Wolverine, "you're not the only one with gifts"?

I'm assuming it's bc he transferred himself into his twins body (we're left to assume it most have been his twin since he still looks like Xavier in DOFP) at the end of X3, but they really expect most people to know that?

So....if the comic is based on actual events that happened in the film universe.....could we possibly get a flashback scene of Jackman in the suit?!?!?!?!

And possibly Deadpool.

Depends how you look at timeline B i guess and where certain movies fit in like even if you say Origins isn't canon... is the opening with him as a kid canon for the new timeline? is the flashback in the wolverine canon for the new timeline?

I assume thats the comics job

True, but from what Mangold says, its sounds like something important happened that the comic is dramatizing, perhaps we will get some sort of flashback reflection scene to get real context to where Logan's mindset is at. Its wishful thinking, but I don't think its out of the realm of possibility.
