Mystery/Thriller LOST - But Not Forgotten...Except by the Emmys - Part 1

The first time that I watched that episode, I was soooo thrilled! Like I had my hands all over the face just for the anticipation on what was gonna happen! It was just amazing!

And the death of Boone, Charlie, Sun/Jin remain to be sad everytime I watch it :( Love it!!!

Dude, I'm still not okay at Charlie's death. Still not okay. :csad:

On the other hand, [BLACKOUT]the series finale when he and Claire reunited in the flash sideways had me squealing in joy. And I'm not one for that type of thing, normally.[/BLACKOUT]

Going back and having rewatched LOST recently, I came to the following conclusion:

This is a groundbreaking, brilliantly weaved fantasy drama with absolutely great characters and an interesting thematic/philosofical background that enhances both narrative and characterization (as oppossed to eclipsing it or detracting from it).

When it tries to be, when it's sold as, a mystery show, it's an absolute disaster though (and sadly, they sold it as that, so guess people are right to be angry).

Christian is me.
No, they were not dead since the Pilot. The characters were all very much alive throughout the show, and everything on the island did happen.

What you see in the "flash-sideways" is a world where the characters are all dead. After everyone in the real world had passed and were in the process of moving on into the afterlife.

That's exactly what the eyeroll in the last picture meant.

I know, I just hear so many people telling me the show sucked because they were dead the whole time and nothing actually happened.

I've rewatched the show about 5 or 6 times now, so I've been able to theorize and figure out quite a bit for myself.

One thing that has me raise an eyebrow, and I'm not sure if it's an error, is a comment made by one of the "Others" in season 3.

"Shepherd wasn't even on Jacob's list!" - Picket

Possibilities:

1. The show writers made a mistake
2. Ben did not speak to Jacob and had the wrong list
3. Ben knew that Jack was on the list but lied to his followers

In regards to #2, it's possible that the MIB wanted Ben to think that Jack was not on the list in hopes of getting him killed. Especially since Jack was "the obvious choice."

Any ideas?

I hope we do get a new LOST series at some point, and it was being discussed as a possibility, but it seems less and less likely.

Two things:

1) Ben most likely invented some of Jacob's demands, simply because he didn't want to lose power in front of The Others.

2) A lot of people believe they were dead since the pilot because, when the finale aired, ABC decided to put, during the ending credits, images of the fuselage from the first episode, with no people around. They thought it was a cute way to say goodbye to the show, but they didn't realize everything matters in that show, and a lot of people thought that was an indication that they were dead all along.

1) I agree with your first point. Ben losing his power was an ongoing fear of his so it made sense that he would make things up just to keep his position.

2) I was just reading about that today. Funny, when watching the show, I never once thought, "oh that footage indicates that they were dead all along." In fact, something about the plane parts sitting on the island with no one around kind of makes me a bit teary. I don't know why. But I can understand why it confused others.

There were multiple lists. Slips of paper from Jacob sent by Richard. Jack was on the "master list" on the cave wall but he wasn't on that particular one, for whatever reason. That being said, it's clear the writers switched gears with Jacob between the time he was first mentioned and when he finally appears. So there are things that don't line up, like how Richard never tells anyone that Ben doesn't actually speak to Jacob despite there being no way that he wasn't aware that Ben was lying.

Yeah, that always confused me. They made it seem as if Richard never spoke to Jacob since he first met him and got his powers.

There must have been some kind of mutual agreement between Richard/Jacob and Richard/Ben about the leadership of the Others. I think Richard put himself aside, still being involved, but let Ben lead. Richard kept a lot of secrets.

Yeah. After all, Jacob wasn't trying to interfere with the island's inhabitants in order to prove a point. Richard was only "hired" to by Jacob to represent him.

Also, over a century passed by and Richard still thought that the island was hell? Or at least his old religious beliefs continued to persist after a long period of serving Jacob, so that makes me wonder if Jacob didn't communicate too well with Richard.

Watched Lindelof's episode of Chris Hardwick's show last night. Loved his story about Tom Cruise flipping his s*** over the pilot when they were still in the editing stage.

Nah, Matthew Fox just wishes he could get television work again.

His habit of punching ladies rightfully saw to it that he won't again.
