Luke Cage Luke Cage General Discussion Thread - Part 1

Given when this show takes place, it's likely SHIELD had quite a bit on their plate to deal with.

Finally got around to watching this last night and I honestly fell asleep during episode 2. I'll push through a few more knowing that they're intentionally trying to capture some of the "blaxploitation" feel - but there's just soooooooooo much cheese here. Not to mention some very wooden moments by the actors and a rather annoying score.

I dunno what it is, but Mike Colter hasn't felt like much of a "lead" yet to me.

I have to disagree with you on the score and Mike being the lead or the show being cheesy and the show having wooden acting. I don't know where your getting that from but that's your opinion.

I can agree to a lot of that J

but you friggin crazy if you didn't like that soundtrack lol

I really liked the series. But I think i'm with most of you in regards to it being below both Daredevil and Jessica Jones. I didn't have a problem with Colter I thought he was great as Luke. Other stand outs for me include Misty, Claire, Pop and Bobby.

I liked the soundtrack, and some of the cinematography was great. I think it's biggest weakness is the villains. I liked the concept of Shades, but Theo Rossi just doesn't come off as intimidating while softly speaking. Cottonmouth and Mariah feel like 2 halves of Kingpin. You've got the crime boss, and the philanthropist, neither of them feel complete.

Diamondback is ok. Certainly more clearly defined. But his motivations seem weak. Too much of it just falls on "this guy is a nut job".

Corny? You don't listen to a lot of old school scores do you.

The sistas on this show are fine ass women

So fine.

Overall, I liked the show. But, there were times I felt they were stretching things out and thus, the show could've been done in less episodes. I mean, the stuff was interesting to watch and all, but I had the feeling of things could be moving along faster. Wasn't entirely feeling how things ended.

I wasn't in love with the fight scenes like some people. Some were ok due to how small and easy it would be. Others, I feel like they could've added a little bit more finesse or showmanship just to add some fun/entertainment to the fight.

Loved the show and so happy my friend's and family who would never watch any super hero besides Batman or Superman are loving this.

I just felt like I could relate to everything from the dialogue to the setting and I'm glad people are streaming the hell out of this show.

Top 5 on Netflix

And when "critical" praise isn't up to the hype's standard we always goto box office or ratings. So regardless if you all think it's up to par with DD or JJ the public likes it's first season more than those.

These ratings are pretty interesting.

What's the source on these ratings? Did Netflix release these figures?

NM just saw the stuff at the bottom.

The more I think on the show, the less I like it.

Ugh, I can't believe Fuller House is the top rated show on Netflix. I've honestly never understood the appeal of that show (the original version, or this new bullsh**). It's always been sappy garbage and every episode is exactly the same.

I think part of it is the nostalgia factor. Also, it's a pretty harmless family sitcom. It's something kids can watch and probably like. Parents can watch it with their kids. It's pretty innocuous. Like a lot of those Disney tween coms. I don't really care for them, but some of them are very popular and have a nice following.

I was happy with this show. Mike Colter played Luke Cage just as how I imagined Luke to act.
Misty Knight has got to the hottest detective ever! She is fire, esp. how she looked in the nightclub scene towards the end of the final episode! C'mon Luke!
I was expecting more from Diamondback. I was expecting a dude badder than Cottonmouth, but we got this formulaic, bad just for the sake of being bad, Bible quoter! I mean, like the Bible quoting bad guy has never been done before.
I thought they might overdo the blaxpoltation theme to a point of possibly alienating non-black viewers but I think they got the balance just right, although I found it a bit corny when some characters would reference 'our ancestors' blah blah, like people really say that in real life.
Wasn't expecting Luke and Claire to hook up. Thought Clare would be done with 'heroes' after her close encounter with Matt/Daredevil. I was kinda hoping Luke and Misty would get it on again, because.. who could really resist her ass?? :)
The fight scenes were good IMO. The fight with Diamondback could have been done at bit later in the final episode. That episode slowed down somewhat after their fight was done.
It's hard to compare it with other Netflix Marvel shows. The blaxplotation theme gave it a slightly lighter feel compared to DD and JJ. I would place it above DD1, on par with DD2 and with JJ on top.

Man, what another awesome series! Finally finished season one last night.

These ratings are pretty interesting.

I stopped watching it for awhile after the first episode and didn't really like it. My thanks to BatsDC for encouraging me to give it a little more time. I'm on Ep 9 and really, really liked the middle episodes. They seem to be the strongest in these Netflix series for some reason. I'll finish up this weekend.

Can't wait to see some team ups. So far, JJ is my favorite by a hair.

Please be careful when posting. Not everyone has finished it.

I've enjoyed LC, not as much as DD Season 1 or Jessica Jones, but I like the cast and characters enough. Great soundtrack too.

I do think that Marvel and Netflix need to cut the next season short, to say 10 episodes season. After the cottonmouth stuff is wrapped up, the series just seems to run aimlessly without any good plot or direction.

I agree about cutting the seasons to about 10 episodes.

Not ready to really give my thoughts on the series yet but have noticed one thing...

No cigarettes or cigars. I feel like if you're not going to use them don't substitute it with alcohol. They're not the same thing and when you light up a cigarette in a social context it's not the same as opening up a bottle.

Some scenes on Luke Cage (not even Jessica Jones as much) have me cringing I have to admit.

Other than that, obvious things like cotton mouth not just poisoning Cage (basic hitman would've attempted this) are bit of downfall but haven't watched all the episodes yet to really feel out his character so won't comment. Just please Marvel Studios, if you're going to ban cigarettes don't simply try to substitute them with something else in the scene it just comes off wrong...:loco: I understand kids watch the show and not want them to smoke is good though.

Anyway, love the score and the actors are doing a good job. Special effects could be better at least on par with Agents of Shield as far as action scenes go but is pretty good so far.

I feel as if the show accomplished what it wanted to and appealed to who it was trying to appeal to. Personally I loved the show and of all the Marvel/Netflix shows, because it's not as heavy and dark, it's easier to go back and rewatch.

There isn't ever going to be universal agreement and no one show can please everyone but this sure did please me. I absolultely loved the nod to 70s blackexplotation, it was awesome- and the soundtrack was EPIC!!! These things really set the series apart and made it special- but for some who aren't into such things this could be the things that left you cold.

Maybe not the best of all the Marvel/Netflix shows but definitely the funnest~

Can't wait for Season 2!

Unfortunately we will be waiting quite a while for season two.
