The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker - Mark Hamill

I got chills when I saw him.

I mean, he's my favorite character of the entire series. Total chills.

Honestly it just makes me more excited for the movies that follow, because I know he'll have a bigger presence obviously.

So everyone be prepared for the:

Episode VIII is too dependent on ESB references cause Luke is training Rey like Yoda trained Luke. Rey may have to face off Kylo like Luke had to face Vader to become a Jedi.

;)

It's Rian writing this, not JJ. We're good on that front, I'm sure of it.

Huh. That could explain why Luke has been AWOL for so long. I hadn't realized that he would have felt immense guilt at his nephew turning to the Dark Side while under his tutelage. The fact that Ren killed all his disciples must have been doubly crushing for him. So I guess that would explain his reluctance to train Rey when the next movie comes around.

Earlier I was a little peeved that Luke had gone into hiding while the galaxy was turing to **** and the First Order running amok with Kylo Ren leading the charge. It just seemed so unlike him to just abandon his friends and family in their hour of need while he went off sightseeing at old Jedi ruins. But thinking about it now, his history with Ren would have been the perfect reasoning to disappear like that.

I really hope that Rey isn't his daughter. Let's not beat that dead horse again.

I hope (and am pretty sure) it's not just that. They say he went looking for the first Jedi Temple. I'm sure he has a plan. Otherwise, it's too much like Obi Wan/Yoda.

But the movie isn't called 'Luke Skywalker'.

Exactly. I honestly cant understand all the wah-wah-ing about this that I've read on various forums; and this is coming from one of the biggest Luke fanboys there is because..........

^^^^of this.

We'll get more than enough of Luke-centric awesomeness in the next two.

A lot of Luke would have hurt how much time the main new cast got. It was imperative that they spent time getting you interested in the main new cast. I hope nobody thinks me ageist but main roles in an adventure film like Star Wars should be played by younger people than 60-70 year olds. The original cast is great and I can't wait to see more of them but this genre is a younger persons game.

Luke being the object of the quest for this adventure necessitated his absence until the end. The myth of his life and mystery of his absence was really its own character, and filled the void left by a physical presence. The final reveal, and what was being offered had so much more weight as a result. Not to mention R2's reaction to the circumstances was gut wrenching and added that much more to it all.

There was so much going on in The Force Awakens that they could not of had Luke be at the centre of the movie and give his character the focus he needs.

People seem to want everything in one movie and that isn't possible. There are two more films to explore the continuing story of Luke Skywalker. The Force Awakens laid the ground work for his return by introducing the new central characters, establishing relationships, establishing the new status quo in the Star Wars galaxy and so on.

I really hope that, for Episode 8, we get to see Luke portrayed as a VERY Powerful Jedi.

I've had several friends who have done nothing but made fun of Luke as a Jedi, simply because his fighting style with a lightsaber wasn't as fast and intense (from their perspective) as the likes of Obi-Wan and Darth Maul from the Prequel Trilogy.

Plus, they always state that Vader pretty much let Luke win in their lightsaber fight as he would never really aim to kill his son, thus making Luke appear more weaker in their eyes.

Show this to your friends.

Mark Hamill explains why his lightsaber duels were at a slower pace than the ones in the PT.

Says:

In those days, we choreographed the scene and George looked at it and he said "you can't take your hand off the lightsaber", we said "why", and he said "its heavy. Its like Excalibur, which really limits the kind of movements you can make." Ya know, flash-forward a couple of decades, we're watching the "Phantom Menace" and their twirling them around like batons. He changed his mind.
Still though. His sword fighting looked more realistic. They'll definitely speed up the choreography in the next movie. No doubt. :yay:

The Hounds attitude about Arya's water dancing sword play in Game Of Thrones is pretty accurate to how some folks view the lightsabre battles in the prequels.

The lightsaber fights got ridiculous after a while in the prequels. There was far to much overly choreographed twirling and bouncing about for no particular reason.

Vader might not of wanted to kill Luke but he had no problem maiming him.

 The GoT with lightsabers videos are better lightsaber duels than the ones in the prequels.

In all honesty I am glad they held Luke back, there was plenty going on with Chewie, Han and Leia to get the nostalgia feels.

Luke will clearly have lots of attention next time out.

They already had one member of the "Big Three" essentially being a main character here, namely Han. Trying to the same for Luke and Leia would have served to take the focus off of the new cast, which is exactly what you DON'T want to do. There's two more films in this trilogy after all.

Luke being old and realizing that the books are coming to life was very intense. It's been 30 years!! I bet he is powerful.

I can see Luke playing the role of Yoda in the next two films. After seeing the Force Awakens, now we can see why he was absent in all the marketing and merchandising stuff. I wonder if they will produce action figures of Luke with TFA now released.

Only after seeing Luke in TFA have I realized how little of Luke's life we actually saw in the OT. Just imagine if they kept making movies.

Agreed. Obi-wan vs. Maul was the pinnacle of lightsaber battles as they were fast but there was still intensity, weight and force behind the swings and parries. In contrast Obi-Wan vs Anakin got a bit ridiculous as they were basically love-tapping their sabers together.

I expect to see plenty of EU stories about what he's been doing since ROTJ.

I don't know about that...

I really enjoyed seeing Luke in Episode VII. Even though it was minimal. It was powerful scene with John Willaims The Force/Skywalker theme playing. Can't wait for Episode VIII

I wasn't upset at all not seeing Luke that much. I feel he'll have a bigger presence in the next movie
