Luther coming to BBC America

A period soap opera like Downton Abbey gets more attention in the U.S than Luther. I think the fact its on BBC America instead of PBS is why it slips under the radar in the U.S.

Utopia is one of the best and most original shows I've seen this year and that got slept on in the UK and Canada as well despite both David Fincher and Rian Johnson loving the show and planning on making a remake of it for HBO in the U.S

Following the Russian remake Fox is planning on remaking Luther for the U.S

Following this season's Broadchurch adaptation, Gracepoint, Fox is targeting Luther for its next British remake.

The network has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment to Luther, an adaptation of the BBC's Emmy-nominated drama series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Fox's remake is based on the format created by Neil Cross and centers on John Luther (Idris Elba), a detective dedicated to solving crimes who finds his commitment to his duties both a blessing and a curse.

Cross is on board to pen the script and executive produce the Fox take, which hails from 20th Century Fox Television, Chernin Entertainment and original producers BBC Worldwide Productions. Chernin's Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, BBC's Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner and Elba are also attached to executive produce.
Elba, who has been nominated for three outstanding lead actor in a miniseries Emmy Awards for his part, is not currently slated to have an on-screen role.

Luther, which ran for three seasons and 14 total episodes from 2010-2013, netted Elba a Golden Globe win in 2011 as well as a pair of NAACP prizes. The series has also received eight Emmy nominations, including two for outstanding miniseries. Luther is also a critical favorite and one of the BBC's highest-rated original series.

THR's chief TV critic Tim Goodman ranked Luther as the 19th-best cable drama of 2013. "In this third season, Luther was prone to more crazy twists than really necessary but otherwise had enough grit in the dialogue and more than enough material for Idris Elba to elevate with his magnificent acting and commanding presence," he wrote.

Luther in February spawned a Russian remake for Channel One in BBC Worldwide's first-ever deal for the format. The adaptation, called Klim, was picked up for eight episodes and is due to air in 2015.

Idris Elba has said that he wants Luther to return for a one-off special.

The actor told Radio Times that while he does not want a full fourth series of the crime drama, a story exists for a single episode comeback.

"I am desperately trying to make that happen," Elba said.

"I think we're gonna probably do one more incarnation on TV. But not a season - a one-off.

"There's a story idea but no script yet. But we're gunning to do it at the end of this year. There's a lot of pressure from everyone to make it, so we're gonna do it."

He added that he put his "heart and soul" into the show and said that acting in the BBC One hit was "cathartic" and "therapy" at a dark time in his own life.

Who is the best choices to replace Elba as Luther in this Fox show?

Awesome. Only two hour long episodes but I'll take that over nothing.

It might be too much of a nod to 24, but Kiefer would be a pretty perfect American Luthor... or already has been sort of ha.

Good news on more BBC Luther stuff. The American version, I want no parts of.

This is so awesome. Luther is such a great show, I'm assuming this is basically going to be a two hour film that ties everything up. All I ask for is a little closure.

I hate to be one of those "remakes suck!" guys, but I don't really see the point of Luther without Idris Elba. It's not especially original or well-written, it's mainly just an acting showcase for him.

I'm much more excited for the 2015 miniseries than any Fox remake. However, I will at least wait for casting before I decide.

More Luther you say? YES PLEASE.

What?! Have you even watched it?

What a ridiculous statement. Idris Elba is great, but that's also a testament to the fact that the material is extremely well-written. Ugh.

Just started watching this yesterday and I'm almost done with season 2. It's pretty great. But sh**, man. John Luther's got 99 problems and b****'s are all of them.

Idris Elba said filming Luther is up next so production will start soon. I think Ruth Wilson's Broadway play with Jake Gyllenhaal finishes its run next month as well.

Ruth might be too busy filming The Affair, the Showtime show she won her Emmy for...

Sexy.

Also, thank god this series didn't officially end on that bridge.

Is John going to get a new coat?

I wonder if he will get a new sidekick/dead friend walking?

Old sourpuss Erin Gray could be his sidekick I guess. She isn't John's number 1 hater anymore.
