The Dark Knight Rises Mad as a Hatter:The Official Jervis Tetch Thread

SVU is a goddamn police procedural and obviously deals with those situations.

The Batman franchise is beloved by children and making Batman's main antagonist a genius pedophile is marketing suicide. Who's going to put a poster on their wall of this guy? How do you sell a toy based on a leering child molestor?

Save the sex offenders for Watchmen, methinks.

Not that much different from the Joker, a murderous clown scarring his victims like Elizabeth Short.

The Mad Hatter is one of my favourite villains simply because of his potential as a villain. sadly he is sidelined by many writers as a paedophile which works but is really just uninspired move. BTAS got him right, imagine how heart wrenching it would be for Bruce to abandon his dream life. That said, the "best" version of the Mad Hatter would not work in the Nolanverse in my opinion, so if he was to appear I'd still rather him be a homicidal wacko with Alice themed crimes, quickly put to an end like The Scarecrow in TDK to show how madness has escalated in Gotham. No peadophile stuff please, its a copout for a villain with so much potential.

I like this casting decision but I just wish he weren't in so many Tim Burton movies. How many has been in? I'm guessing 10 or something close to that and still not one Chris Nolan film has he been in. What could have been. :csad:

Tim Burton left Michael Keaton and is with Johnny Depp

ony 6 movies as far as I recall

Hopefully he can leave Depp and get another actor to do his next 6 films with. I mean Depp is great but does Burton have to cast him in almost every picture he makes? I mean this is getting ridiculous, I know it must be 6 films so far but remember that Depp is signed on to star in his Alice In Wonderland film.

This is more like Johnny Depp. But I think he'll be playing the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland instead.

Still how many actors have done that?
Director George Cukor and Katharine Hepburn: 10 films
Director Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney: 6 films
Director John Huston and Humphrey Bogart : 6 films
Director John Ford and John Wayne: About 20 films (counting Wayne as extra)
Director Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon: 7 films
Director Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro: 9 films
Director Roger Corman and Vincent Price: 8 films
Director Pedro Almódovar and Cecilia Roth: 6 films

if Mad Hatter was to be in it i would go with Andy Serkis all day long. Johnny Depp comes across too nice and friendly IMO. Andy Serkis however just looks creepy and border-line peedo.

I have a hard time seeing the Mad Hatter in a Nolan film. He's such a minor character really. If he was included, I'd imagine it being something along the lines of Zsasz in Begins. I small cameo of the Mad Hatter being prosecuted in court, showing how there are more and more criminal freaks in Gotham.

Prosecutor: "Your Honor-- the defendent, Mr. Tetch, called himself the 'Mad Hatter' in the abduction of these young girls, based on his obsession with the Alice in Wonderland characters."

Actors don't play themselves.

:hehe::hehe::hehe: yea obviously!! maybe i wrote it wrong, but what i meant was if Johnny Depp was Mad Hatter i personally couldn't buy it. maybe thats me being small minded i dunno, but i just couldn't see Johnny Depp playing a peedo child killer, whereas Andy Serkis looks like a peedo child killer anyway!!!

Probably a possibility, maybe a cameo or something, I can see him as a patient at Arkham. It just seems that there are more popular villains they can use for screen time instead. I won't go into who I'd like more, I'll just say that with the new Alice In Wonderland movie coming up, I think people will get their fill with Mad Hatters.

I think a way to incorporate Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter into a "Nolan-verse" Batman movie, that would be somewhat cannon, would to have him involved in human trafficing and the "sex trade." It could definitely work as a minor plot line, I believe. At first I thought the idea would be too much for a pg-13 movie, but I recently saw the movie Taken, which deals directly with this topic, and it kept a pg-13 rating.

I'm all for the Mad Hatter in the third movie. I always loved the weird psycho relationship...if you can call it that.....that Hatter and Scarecrow had in The Long Halloween. I don't and wouldn't want him involved in any sort of sex trade thing and I definately don't think that they'd do that. Hell they never even clearly showed the Joker stab anybody in Dark knight...so there are limits to the batman movies. Anyways, I could see the Hatter as some sort of kidnapper of sorts. It'd be cool to see him at a big table like in Alice in Wonderland with his hostage....although I'd have the scene look like the dinner scene in the original Chainsaw masacre. That would be disturbing....

I can't believe I'm not getting any support for Ian Holm in the role

:(
He's my first choice too

Him as a Hobbit is just a great example of why he'd be good for the role.

didn't he already play that in Willy Wonka
LOL

no, but, seriously, I really wouldn't want them to take that route in the movie

how about... Leslie Jordan
LOL

The Mad Hatter is too good of a villain to ruin as a pedophile character, or for that matter force him into the realism box that removes his neat mind control schtick.

Ruin him? He already is a pedophile in the comics..what are you talking about?

No he isn't, that is only an unfortunate sterotype as a result of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. Read the recent Secret Six series, in which Tetch made the police force his own personal army using his mind control technology. Or perhaps Dini's Wonderland Gang story. Look no further than BTAS for the ultimate portrayal as well. He is a villain who has so much to offer, sadly many either want him as a peadophile, or have that image of him from the few comics who also portray him that way unimaginably.

But BTAS portrayed him as a perverted freak just as much as some of the comics

The only difference being, they had to tone it down since it was a family cartoon.
